Power to Youth has emphasized on the need to include the youth in decision making.

Program Coordinator for Power to Youth Program Thandizo Mphwiyo said this after Centre for Human Rights Rehabilitation (CHRR) through Power to Youth Program with funding by Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs conducted a 2 days orientation to youths from different TA’s of Dedza district on harmful practices.

Mphwiyo said what they want to achieve is to ensure that youths are well engaged and empowered to claim for their rights.

She further said their role will be to monitor human rights violations and inform mitigating strategies.

“The unique thing about Power to Youth Program is that we are involving the youth themselves, youths are at the centre of implementation of any initiative”, said Mphwiyo.

She said for example the composition of Community Victim Support Unit’s (CVSU’s) doesn’t have youths in it yet the youths are the ones facing a lot of challenges.

Mphwiyo added to say that these CVSU’s are not youth friendly which makes is hard for the youth to report the challenges they face.

She said most youth in Malawi are facing a lot of Gender Based Violence, with harmful practices that are affecting their welfare and contributing to a lot of teen pregnancies and child marriages.

” We are targeting them so that they start questioning some of these social norms”, concluded Mphwiyo.

Some of the youths who participated in the orientation, Juliet Kulima from Traditional Authority Tambala and William Charles from Traditional Authority Kasumbu said the orientation is an eye opener and it will help them to identify and report the abuses that take place in their communities.

By Durrell Namasani

The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (Macra) has ordered Angaliba television and radio to cease broadcasting for failure to pay outstanding licence fees. This come a few days after the Authority issued a similar order to Rainbow TV

In a statement signed by Macra director general Daud Suleman, the authority directed Angaliba to cease broadcasting within 24 hours from June 14, 2022.

Reads the statement in part: “In 2021, Macra renewed Angaliba’s Television and Radio licences. The renewal was subject to Angaliba paying outstanding licence fees, Angaliba made some payments towards the outstanding fees but disputed the amount owing to Macra.”

It further says while reconciliations were underway to ascertain the exact amount due to Macra, Angaliba resumed its transmission contrary to Macra’s directive.

Macra summoned Angaliba on the issue on June 6 2022 for hearing, and a decision was made thereafter for Angaliba to cease broadcasting.

Nankhumwa and Jeffrey left in the cold
…the two not invited for a DPP NGC meeting

Divisions continues to widen in the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) as reports from the former ruling perty indicates that that the embattled Kondwani Nankhumwa and Secretary General Grizelder Jeffrey have been sidelined at the party’s central executive meeting taking place at Peter Mutharika’s PAGE residence in Mangochi.

Confirming this development Jeffrey said Nankhumwa and herself have not been invited to attend the high-level Tuesday meeting.
Jeffrey said the development vindicates what they have been saying all along that they are not responsible for the prevailing squabbles in the party.
“This only proves that me and Nankhumwa are not the problem in DPP. There is a court order reinstating us on our positions, but look, they are there meeting while excluding us” said Jeffrey.

This development is not surprising as the Nankhumwa and Jeffrey have not been seeing eye to eye with Pater Mutharika’s led faction in what is seen as the biggest leadership crisis since the party was established in 2005.
Nankhumwa and Jeffrey have been fighting to wrestle power from Peter Mutharika and the two do not support suggestions of a comeback of the former Malawi President to represent the DPP in 2025.

President Lazarus Chakwera has advised Principal Secretaries from various government MDAs to ensure that the government system is being run smoothly.

He was speaking during an interface meeting he had with PSs from government departments at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe on Tuesday, June 14,2022.

Describing the government system as broken, President Chakwera said; “The reason I had my Secretary assemble you last week in preparation for meeting me today is because the broken systems I want fixed are controlled by you, because as Principal Secretaries, you are the Controlling Officers of our Government Ministries, Departments and Agencies.

You are the ones who control the Civil Service, and the fact that the Civil Service is broken, and in urgent need of fixing means that the task of fixing it rests on you.”

He added that his task is to give these Controlling Officers direction on what they must focus on and to engage in a continuous evaluation on whether they have what it takes to fix the country’s broken system.

Further President Chakwera told the PSs that they will be meeting the Secretary to the Office of President and Cabinet monthly, with performance appraisals expected to be taking place quarterly.

“The first goal of these measures is to create synergy among you and increase the level of collaboration between you and my office, because ultimately, we must work for Malawians as one team.

The second goal is to ensure that we are on the same page regarding what exactly is broken in the Civil Service and what we must do as a matter of urgency to fix it.” Said the President.

He then told them that the directive is also aimed at ensuring that there is no MDA that is motivated by anything else other than excellent service to Malawi and its people.

Malawi leader has since pledged his total support for the Controlling Officers to make them succeed as a way of delivering the set goals.
