Zikhale Ng’oma orders deportation of Rwandese national Sylvestre Bizimana

Minister of Homeland Security Kenneth Zikhale Ng’oma has ordered deportation of a Rwandese national Sylvestre Bizimana.

According to Ng’oma, Bizimana is suspected to have been operating illegal businesses in the country as evidenced by the recent seizure of his containers by police at Mgona Market in Lilongwe.

Ng’oma said that Bizimana is also suspected to be involved in a money laundering cartel which led to his recent arrest, saying that the person in question poses a threat to the country’s security, hence ordering for his deportation.

Ng’oma disclosed that Bizimana is expected to leave the country today, saying that the flight and all the requirements for his deportation are set.

The minister further said that Bizimana is alleged to have obtained the Malawian Citizenship in a dubious way.

“The record shows that the Rwandese in question did not stay in the country continuously for 7 years as a lawful resident and that he used citizenship reference number 69314 which belonged to a Burundi national Mr Vincent Ngedanayo Kanyoni instead of having his own file,” said Ng’oma.

Bizimana who is a Rwandese national by birth and was a Malawian national by naturalisation.

Chakwera applauds trade ties between China and Malawi

President Lazarus Chakwera who is currently in China has applauded the existing sister relationship in trade between China and Malawi, saying the trade agreements so far signed between the two countries is a testimony to strong trade ties.

Chakwera was speaking on Wednesday, 28th June, 2023 during the audience he had with the Vice President for the People’s Republic of China, Rt. Han Zheng at Jiusuo Hotel in China.

The meeting which came on the sidelines of the 3rd China-Africa Economic and Trade Expo at which President Chakwera will be a special guest, cantered on strengthening diplomatic ties, bolstering trade, and capitalizing on Foreign Direct Investment.

In his remarks, President Chakwera applauded Chinese government for granting Zero-tariff treatment on 98 Percent on taxable products from 10 Least Developed Countries, Malawi being one of them.

“The signing of a Protocol for export of Soybeans from Malawi to China is a good example for comprehensive trade exploration between our two nations.

It is therefore imperative that Chinese government expedites my country’s application for the approval of protocols to export goods such as macadamia nuts and dry chillies to this country (China)” Said President Chakwera

He further highlighted areas like construction of Lambilambi Dam, Lilongwe Water Project, and Lower Fufu Hydro-electric Power Station as other critical areas of development that need assistance from government of China, saying the projects have great economic benefits for Malawi.

Malawi leader has since commended China for her support during Cyclone Freddy and other climate change emergencies in Malawi.

The meeting was also attended by Malawi Government officials including Finance Minister, Sosten Gwengwe, Foreign Affairs Minister, Nancy Tembo, Minister of Agriculture Sam Kawale, Ambassador Allan Chintedza and other representatives of the Chinese government.

Bakili Muluzi secures K500 Million donation for Cyclone Freddy survivors

Former President Dr Bakili Muluzi, in his capacity as Goodwill Ambassador for Cyclone Freddy, has announced that the Dozy Mmobuosi Fondation has made a deposit of K500 million for the construction of 75 houses for Tropical Cyclone Freddy survivors in Zomba and Phalombe.

Mmobuosi, a Nigerian author and entrepreneur committed K500 million into the Tigwirane Manja Housing Project which will see 75 houses being constructed in Phalombe and Zomba districts.

Muluzi made the announcement at BCA Hill in Blantyre on Tuesday during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Malawi Red Cross Society (MRCS) which has been tasked to spearhead the construction of the houses.

He said the money has already been deposited into MRCS’s account.

“These funds that have come under Tigwirane Manja initiative will go directly to the construction of the houses and provision of other vital shelter to the affected individuals and families,” he said.

Muluzi applauded Mmobuosi Foundation for the support and compassion towards the people of Malawi saying it will have a profound impact on the lives of those displaced and are in urgent need of assistance.

MRCS President, Innocent Majiya said the signing of the MoU signifies the strong partnership and trust that government has in Red Cross.

He joined Muluzi in commending the Foundation for its support towards the affected households saying the organisation is geared to construct standard and durable houses that will withstand natural disasters.

According to Majiya, 45 houses will be constructed in Phalombe while Zomba will have 30 in an exercise that is expected to last four months.

ESCOM to start alcohol, drug tests on employees

The power supply company, Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) says it will start conducting random mandatory alcohol and other drug screening tests for all its employees with immediate effect.

According to ESCOM, the purpose of the exercise is to provide a safe working environment that is alcohol and drug free and that is conducive for increased productivity.

The corporation adds that on top of alcohol and drug screening tests, the company’s security staff shall also conduct security checks specific for alcohol and drugs for its employees and any person conducting business within the company’s premises.



“The Human resource department shall invoke disciplinary action up to termination to any employee involved in the sale,use, possession or transfer of illegal drugs within ESCOM premises in line with Disciplinary policy,” reads the statement released by the company.

Malawi cements diplomatic ties with Malta

The Malawi High commissioner to the United Kingdom Dr Thomas Bisika  on Tuesday presented his letters of credence to the President of Malta , an act that cements the strong relationship that exists between the two countries.

Dr Bisika was in Malta’s capital Valletta where he was hosted by Dr. George Vella, President of Malta at the Grandmasters Palace.  Although based in London , the Malawi High commissioner covers the following countries  to his accreditation namely; Ireland, Iceland, Denmark, Malta, Finland, Norway, Portugal, Spain and Sweden.

Over the years Malawi  has seen itself exporting  products such as tea, pepper, raw sugar to Malta.Both Malawi and Malta maintain diplomatic relations with many countries around the world and are active participants in various international organizations.

Malta is an archipelago in the central Mediterranean between Sicily and the North African coast. It’s a nation known for historic sites related to a succession of rulers including the Romans, Moors, Knights of Saint John, French and British. It has numerous fortresses, megalithic temples and the Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum, a subterranean complex of halls and burial chambers dating to circa 4000 B.C.
