Three gets 7 years jail term for property robbery in Lilongwe

The Mapuyu Second Grade Magistrate court in Lilongwe has convicted and sentenced three men to 7 years imprisonment with hard labour for the offence of robbery.

The court, through state prosecutor Sub Inspector Steve Galleta, heard that on October 31, 2022 the convicts, Austin Josamu, 31, Masawu Banda, 26, Matias Phiri, 29, and three others who are still at large went to Katchuta Farm in the district, where they stole property worth K5,849,250.



Galleta continued to tell the court that the six, tied the watchmen before breaking into the warehouse and stole 15 goats, 105 live chickens, 10 bags each, of rice and maize, 12 bags of fertilizer and other assorted items.

They transported the items in four trips using a hired minibus to Lilongwe City where they sold.

Austin Josamu, hails from Katutula Village, Masawu Banda, hails from Sawala Village, both in Traditional Authority Mkanda, Mchinji, whilst Matias Phiri, hails from Nkachare Village, T/A Wimbe in Kasungu District.

Police nab four over murder in Thyolo

Malawi Police in Thyolo district are keeping in custody four people on allegation that they defiled and murdered a 12-year-old girl in the district last week.

According to Thyolo Police Deputy Public Relations Officer Rebecca Kashoti, the four are Dan Salijeni, 27, Fletcher Seleman, 24, Kilinani Kampondeni, 26 and Andrew Salijeni 29 all from Thyolo district.



Kashoti has indicated that investigations are on-going.

On January 17,2023, the body of the girl was found along Kasembereka River in the district, with police indicating that she was defiled before being murdered.

The girl who was in standard 8 at Ntambanyama primary school, and hailed from Ganiza village in the area of Traditional Authority Kapichi, was abducted after her part-time lessons.

Rapper ‘Guntolah’ releases emotional tribute song to ‘WalyCris’ a month after his tragic death

Hip-hop artist Guntolah has released a tribute song to fellow musician WalyCris Wanyengo who died in December last year and many people have since described it as a befitting tribute to the fallen star.

The rapper released an emotional tribute track titled “Letter to Waly” on Monday morning which was accompanied by a video.

The song has been produced by HykeBeatz and the video has been directed by M-Feli

Guntolah and WalyCris



Guntolah real-name AbduRasheed Maloko, is one of WalyCris’ closest friends and the two grew up together in Machinjiri, Blantyre.

WalyCris died on 23 December, 2022 and was laid to rest on 31st December, 2022.

He became a household name in September 2022 after releasing his hit single “Achalume”.

He letter came up with “Mbumu” which was also done in Yao language and was released just a few days before his death.

Malawi govt launches Malawi social protection muilti-donor trust fund

The Malawi government in conjunction with World Bank and other development partners on Monday January 23,2022 successfully launched Malawi Social Protection Multi-Donor Trust Fund, the largest donor funding basket for social protection programs in Malawi.

The fund will see the donors putting their support for social protection programs in the country in one basket.



Speaking after the signing and launch ceremony, Minister of Local Government Blessings Chinsinga said his ministry being one of the ministries working on implementation of the program, he is excited because the fund will be a catalyst for deepening and broadening decentralisation.

Chinsinga said, his ministry will therefore, do all what it takes to ensure the resources meant for the program are well utilised.

Said Chinsinga” We will put up systems that ensures that the intended beneficiaries get reached with the support to improve their livelihoods.”

The Minister said, the new trust fund is an important milestone toward harmonising social protection financing in Malawi and that it will enable the Malawi Government to provide unconditional cash transfers to the most vulnerable Malawians and deliver cash for work to households at risk of extreme hunger.

He added that he Fund will support investments in local communities to undertake public works that recover soils and watersheds.

“It will help boost harvests and increase Malawi’s resilience to the effects of climate change.

“Most importantly, it will raise incomes for farming households for years to come, through expansion of the cash for work program that provides temporary jobs,” said Chinsinga.

Yamamba CDSS student expelled for attempting to rape a female teacher

A form 3 student at Yamba Community Day Secondary School (CDSS) Lwitiko Precious Msukwa has been expelled from school for attempting to rape his female teacher

The incident happened last term and the teacher reported the matter to the school authorities who forwarded it to the Ministry of Education for permission to expel the student.

In a memo dated 20th January, 2023,from The Secretary for Education that 247 Malawi has seen, the Ministry has granted permission to the school for the student to be expelled because of his dangerous behavior.



The Ministry has also granted Mzimba Secondary School permission to expel three form 2 students for instigating rebellious behavior and loss of interest in school.

The three are Pylan Kondowe, Manepo Chirwa and Saulos Swlimba.

The Ministry has also expelled some students from Salima Secondary School, Ntchisi Secondary School , M’bomba Secondary School and Madise Secondary School for different offences.
