Miracle Gabeya wins Player Of The Tournament Award in Airtel Top 8

Mighty Mukuru Wanderers defender Miracle Gabeya has won the Player Of The Tournament award in the season 5 of Airtel Top 8 competition

Gabeya received the award during an award ceremony that took place on Wednesday evening at Sunbird Mount Soche Hotel in Blantyre.

The towering defender beat fellow Wanderers player who also played with him at Nyasa Big Bullets, Chiukepo Msowoya and Bullets defender Gomezgani Chirwa.



Gabeya, signed for the Nomads early last year after declining contract extension at Bullets after he indicated that it was on the lower side.

Other players that received awards are Chiukepo Msowoya, Lanjesi Nkhoma and Clement Nyondo who finished the tournament as top goal scorers with 2 goals each.

In the Media Awards, Garry Chirwa of Nation Publications Limited won the Bet Print Journalist Award and Pemphero Musowa of Kulinji.com won the Best Online Journalist Award .

The Best TV Journalist Award went to Hamkey Chimtengo of Mibawa Television while Boby Kabango of Nation Publications Limited won Best Photojournalist Award.

Richard Tiyesi of Timveni Radio was the winner in the Radio Category while Peter Fote of Times Group went home with the Best Commentator award.

The Airtel Top 8 tournament which was played in a period of 7 weeks, started in November and ended on 17th December 2022.

Wanderers won the Airtel Top 8 Cup for the first time after beating Nyasa Big Bullets on post match penalties.

President Lazarus Chakwera will tomorrow Thursday February 2,2023 preside over the 2022-2023 National Development Conference at Bingu National Convention Centre ( BICC) in Lilongwe.

According to the statement signed by the Secretary to the President and Cabinet Colleen Zamba, Chakwera will arrive at the function at 8:00 am.

The conference, to be held under the theme: ‘Malawi 2063 One Year On: Forging Concerted Efforts on the Journey to Wealth Creation and Self-Reliance ‘ will see the participants review the progress the country has made in the implementation of the Malawi 2063 national vision.

The Malawi 2063 is a long term national multi sectoral vision of Malawi for the period 2020-2063.

Its main objective is to transform Malawi into a youth-centric inclusive wealthy and self-reliant industrialized upper middle-income country.

The vision is anchored on three key pillars, namely; agricultural productivity and commercialisation, industrialisation, and urbanisation which are to be catalysed by seven enablers, namely; mind-set change, effective governance system, public sector performance, private sector dynamism, human capital development, economic infrastructure, and environmental sustainability.

Govt bows down to opposition MPs ‘unequal fertilizer distribution’ concern

The government has now bowed down to pressure by the opposition, independent and some UTM parliamentarians who were holding a vigil at SFFRFM offices in Blantyre.

According to spokesperson for the MPs Esther Jolobala, the government has assured them that 3000 bags of Urea fertiliser will be given to them by the end of business today.

“However, we will continue with the vigil to monitor what the government has told us is being implemented.



“We want to see action not just words,” Jolobala told journalists.

Over 20 opposition side legislators were demanding answers from the SFFRFM as to why beneficiaries in their constituencies have not yet accessed farming inputs under the Affordable Input Programme.

The MPs claimed that last week, the government got 5000 metric tonnes of fertiliser from SFFRFM warehouses in Chirimba but only distributed 1000 MT to the two regions while the rest were sent to the Central Region.

DPP MPs seal Blantyre’s SFFRFM entrance

Opposition Democractic Progressive Party ( DPP) Members of Parlianment from Sourthen and Eastern Regions have today January 31,2021 sealed the main entrance to the SFFRFM warehouses at Chirimba in Blantyre.

The legislators are blocking any truck loaded with fertiliser from getting out of the premises.

According to what 247 Malawi News has gathered, the main opposition side MPs are demanding the release of Urea fertiliser which they claim is being deliberately held by the government.

The MPs claim the SFFRM has some Urea fertiliser which they have been told is under collateral management.



Their claim comes after government last week managed to get 5000 metric tones (MT) of Urea and only distributed 1000 MT to the two regions to share while the rest of the fertiliser “went somewhere else”.

“We have made attempts to plead with the Minister of Agriculture to consider us on Urea considering the level at which maize requires the product, if we don’t apply urea this week forget about harvest and we, as leaders, would have failed our people,” says Ben Phiri, from Thyolo Central Constituency.

Among the MPs spotted include Mary Mpanga, Mary Navicha, Joseph Grant and Ben Phiri.

Government to recruit role model teachers

In its quest to promote girls’ education in the country, the Ministry of Education says it is set to hire 2, 605 female role model teachers in primary schools across the country.

Secretary for Education, Chikondano Mussa disclosed the move in an interview with the press saying the role model teachers, who will be engaged for a two year renewable contract, will be identified within the communities around primary schools.

Mussa said the recruitment of the teachers will help in reducing drop out rate as they (teachers) will be great motivators to female learners.

“A Non Governmental Organization will be hired to undertake all the normal employment process,” she said.

She said the project is jointly financed by the World Bank, Global Partnership for Education (GPE) and the Malawi Government through Malawi Education Reform Programme (MERP).
