The Consumers Association of Malawi (Cama) has accused the government of negligence leading to the current Cholera outbreak and high number of deaths.

In a statement, Cama Executive Director John Kapito says among other things, the government is failing to maintain and provide adequate sanitation and quality public health care in most parts of the country.

“Government is aware about the poor quality of health care and hygiene within our communities and markets.

“Our markets are the worst, unhygienic places where sewer spew is the source of water, now they are pretending to be in shock with the many deaths by Cholera as if they are not part of the problems,” says Kapito in a statement.

Kapito has since appealed to authorities including the Ministry of Health and local councils to ban sale of perishable foodstuff such as fruits, vegetables, fresh maize and others from any unregulated places and to work on stopping sewage spills in most markets.

He further calls on the Government to take immediate action to ensure that further deaths are prevented through supply of safe water, good sanitation and food safety controls especially in markets.

According to Ministry of Health, as of December 20, 2022, there have been 13,837 cumulative confirmed cases and 410 deaths of cholera in Malawi since the outbreak began, resulting in a case fatality rate of 2.96%.

Cholera is an acute diarrhoeal infection caused by ingestion of food or water contaminated with the bacterium Vibrio cholerae.

The disease remains a global threat to public health and an indicator of inequity and lack of social development.

Ministry of Information and Digitilization in partnership with Public-Private-Partnership Commission (PPPC) is set to undertake the Digital Malawi Project which seeks to improve public institutions connectivity.

Speaking during the Blantyre District Executive Committee meeting on Thursday last week in Blantyre, Ann Liabunya from PPPC said the aim of the project is to extend and improve access to critical ICT infrastructure for the public and private sectors, ICT governance, access to government services and facilitate the provision of e-services.

“There are 500 selected sites to be connected to free internet and these were selected by ICT heads from different Ministries, Departments and Agencies and other public institutions.

“Three contractors have been awarded a 10-year contract for implementation of this project,” she said.

According to Liabunya, Chichiri Prison, Chileka Airport, Ndirande Hill Secondary School, Chichiri Secondary School, Lunzu Secondary School, Blantyre High Court, Limbe Court, Midima Court, Bangwe Post Office and Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital are among the 47 sites that are to benefit from this free internet.

Reacting to the development, Senior Chief Kuntaja said he would love to see the project implemented in both the rural and urban areas, citing community day secondary schools as important sites.

In her remarks, Chief Economist for Blantyre District Council, Melayi Mhone said: “We would like to assure the government that Blantyre District Council will support the project.

“All we are asking for is internet connection in rural areas because some people do refuse to work in the rural areas because of lack of internet connectivity.”

The project is worth $72 million and has been funded by the World Bank.

Police in Kanengo, Lilongwe are keeping in custody two suspects for allegedly possessing a live pangolin

The two are Christina Chiunjiza and Blessings Tchale, both aged 42.

According to Kanengo Police Station Public Relations Officer Sub Inspector Gresham Ngwira, on Tuesday this week, police received a tip that the said suspects were suspiciously loitering around Spama in area 25 while discussing undisclosed type of business on the phone.

“After receiving the information, a team of officers comprising those from National Police Headquarters’ Wildlife and Environmental Crimes Investigation Unit and Kanengo CID officers followed the information which led to the arrest of the two,” said Ngwira.

He said Chiunjiza and Tchale were found with a live Pangolin wrapped in two maize sacks concealed in a black bag.

Meanwhile, the law enforcers seized the protected animal which had since been taken to Lilongwe Wildlife Centre for examination and safe keeping.

According to the National Geographic Channel, pangolin scales are made of keratin, the same material that makes up fingernails, hair, and horn.

Pangolin scales, like rhino horn, have no proven medicinal value, yet they are used in traditional Chinese medicine to help with ailments ranging from lactation difficulties to arthritis.

The scales typically dried and ground up into powder, which may be turned into a pill.

Mindset Change Key To Mw2063 Success

By Sylvester Chibwana

An activist turned politician, Timothy Mtambo has challenged the nation saying there is no development agenda that will succeed unless Malawians change their mindset on various issues of national importance such as civic engagement, civic participation, anti-corruption fight, public sector reforms, electoral reforms, governance, climate change, human rights, freedoms, transparency and accountability, and many more.

Speaking as Minister of National Unity to the press in Mzimba where he was guest of honour at a workshop organized by NICE Trust aimed at ending violence and witchcraft accusations against the elderly, Mtambo pleaded with the CSOs to take the matter of mindset change more seriously since government alone cannot fulfill this mandate. He further said the main problem Malawi faces is not that lack of powerful strategic development plans or documents but mostly the lack of civic engagement, implementation, follow through, and accountability. “Democracy without transparency and accountability is a prerequisite for poverty, inequalities, and underdevelopment. Citizens must always demand accountability from both their elected leaders and public servants – that’s democracy,” said Mtambo.

“When the citizenry doesn’t fully follow what Government, CSOs and Development partners are implementing, it is difficult for them to know their role, or to participate fully,” said Mtambo. He also said this is the reason his Ministry has introduced a citizen engagement platform called Pabwalo and Malawi Wanga for the purpose of bringing Government closer to the people and vice versa.

“Government Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), CSOs, and development partners must be held to account for whatever commitments they have made towards the Mw2063 development blue print, especially on Mindset Change interventions. Without changing the way we have perceived many issues such as corruption, human rights, economic development, democracy and accountability, Malawi will remain poor and underdeveloped. Change can only happen if there is adequate civic engagement,” said Mtambo.

Mtambo has therefore called for serious Mindset Change interventions across the country in order to ascertain success of the various development plans, especially the Mw2063.
