The Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS) on Wednesday donated medical equipment worth K5 million to Mdeka Health Centre in Blantyre District.

The donation, which includes a fridge, wheelchair, stretcher, suction machine, and other essential items, aims to support the center’s healthcare services.

Speaking to journalists, MNCS Director of Human Resource and Administration, Lameck Gomani said the donation is a significant event for the organization.

“We are excited to participate in the assistance of our fellow Malawians,” said Gomani.

He said the donation is funded by surplus funds from a marathon event held in Blantyre some months ago.

Gomani said MNCS chose Mdeka Health Centre after assessing the healthcare needs of various facilities in the area.

He said as an organization promoting sports development, MNCS recognizes the importance of healthcare in supporting sports activities.

“We believe that sports and healthcare go hand-in-hand,” Gomani emphasized.

On his part,Mdeka Health Centre In-charge, Ibrahim Tanga, expressed his gratitude towards MNCS for the donation.

He said the medical equipment will be used to treat various diseases, including asthma, Tuberculosis, and Sexually Transmitted Infection (STIs).

Said Tanga:”The health centre has been facing challenges in providing adequate medical care due to limited resources. We therefore, appreciate MNCS for this donation. It will help us a lot.”

He acknowledged that while the donated equipment will be useful for a couple of years, the health centre still requires more resources to provide quality healthcare services.

Tanga emphasized that the medication available at the center is often insufficient, and additional support is necessary to address the healthcare needs of the community.

Mdeka Health Centre provides medical services to the local population of about 33,100.
