Silver Strikers survive early scare to secure win against Ekwendeni Hammers

Capital City giants Silver Strikers survived a first-half scare as they were forced to come from behind to claim a 3-1 victory against Ekwendeni Hammers at Mzuzu Stadium.

The home side claimed an unlikely 1-nil lead in the first half before being pegged back three times in the second half.

Mphatso Magaleta scored for Ekwendeni just 7 minutes in the first half but the central bankers equalized 13 minutes in the second half through Stain Davie.

Patrick Macheso increased Silver’s lead in the 75th minute before veteran striker Atusaye Nyondo scored the third goal for the Lilongwe, Area 47 side, five minutes later.

In Blantyre, Mighty Mukuru Wanderers failed to return to the top of the log table as they were held by Mighty Tigers 1-1 at Kamuzu Stadium.

Both the Nomads and the Kau-Kau Boys got their goals from the penalty spot through Stanley Sanudi and Precious Chiudza in the 64th and 67th minute respectively.

Elsewhere, rookies Bangwe All Stars recorded their first victory in the TNM Super League following their 2-1 away win over Karonga United at Karonga Stadium.

Michael Tetteh and Innocent Msowoya were on target for the visitors while Davie Tobias scored for the home side from the penalty spot.

Red Lions FC were 2-1 winners against Dedza Dynamos at Balaka Stadium.

Humphrey Minandi and Davie Major scored for the Zomba-based soldiers while Promise Kamwendo scored a consolation goal for the visitors towards the end of the match.

Bottom-placed Extrem FC got Baptism of fire as they were thrashed 1-4 by Kamuzu Barracks at Civo Stadium.

Zeliat Nkhoma, Herbert Wayekha, Chimwemwe Chisambi and man of the match Kelvin Hanganda were among the scorers for KB while Extrem FC got their consolation through Francis Black.

After Sunday’s results, FCB Nyasa Big Bullets remain top with 10 points level with second placed Silver Strikers and third placed Mighty Mukuru Wanderers but the People’s team have a superior goal difference.

Bangwe All Stars have now moved to fourth with 6 points followed by Blue Eagles who are fifth on the log table after accumulating 5 points from four games.

Chakwera means business in UK, meets heads of Governments during Commonwealth Indaba

Malawi Leader President Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera on Friday mingled and interracted with heads of state and Governments when he attended a Commonwealth Leaders Meeting hosted by Baroness Patricia Scotland, the Commonwealth Secretary-General at Marlborough House in the United Kingdom.

The Malawi leader engaged with other Commonwealth Leaders including the Head of the Commonwealth, King Charles III.



Prior to that, Chakwera requested Republic of South Korea for additional support towards Tropical cyclone Freddy recovery.

While the Prime Minister extended his condolences on behalf of Koreans for the devastation Malawi suffered months ago from Cyclone Freddy.

He then pledged Seoul’s solidarity and support to Malawi.

The Republic of South Korea renders support to Malawi and recently released a package of US$200,000 humanitarian assistance for Cyclone Freddy victims.

There was also a similar package last year for victims of Tropical Storms Ana and Gombe.

President Chakwera asked the Prime Minister to support the post-Cyclone Freddy recovery and reconstruction program which is pegged at US$700 million.

Other forms of assistance President Dr Chakwera also expressed gratefulness include a motor vehicle and IT equipment to Ministry of Foreign Affairs worth US$150,000, a US$200,000 package towards cholera fight and US$500,000 to the Daeyang Mission Hospital for the procurement of medicines, medical equipment and an ambulance.

MISA Malawi Mourns Journalist Nomsa Mkandawire Taulo

MISA Malawi says it is deeply saddened and shocked with the sudden death of journalist Nomsa Mkandawire who was working with United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) South Sudan as a Communication and Innovations Analyst

Reports indicate that Mkandawire died on Saturday, May 6, 2023, after a short illness.

Mkandawire worked for the Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) as a reporter, editor and producer between 2004 and 2012 before joining Save the Children International as Campaigns and Communications Specialist.

Later, Nomsa joined United Nations in Malawi as a Communications Officer for Spotlight Initiative. She joined UNDP South Sudan in 2022.

According to a statement signed by MISA Chairperson Golden Matonga, Mkandawire will be remembered as a dedicated and ambitious communications professional who worked tirelessly to improve the lives of the vulnerable, more especially rural women.

“Our condolences go to the Mkandawire and Taulo families, colleagues at the UNDP and the media fraternity.” reads the statement in part.

The death of Nomsa Mkandawire Taulo comes on a day when MISA Malawi was holding an award ceremony in Lilongwe as one way of commemorating the World Press Freedom Day

Critical shortage of midwives hit QUECH labour ward

Operations at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital ‘s delivery suite (labour ward) have heavily been affected with the critical shortage of midwives, we can reveal.

Tonight, the suite only has got three midwives on duty against the required number of 13 midwives on a shift.

The three are expected to attend to 24 delivery beds in the ward. They will also be attending to other duties.



An insider who confided in us said the situation has been like that for a while but the facility’s management is failing to address the situation.

We can also reveal that currently, the hospital Management is relying on nurses working on upkeep basis.

The development puts a heavy risk on expectant mothers as they may hardly be attended to when in labour.

On average, over 35 newborns are delivered at Quech every day.

Bullets thrash Moyale Barracks 3-1 in TNM Super League

TNM Super League defending champions Nyasa Big Bullets have dislodged their neighbors Mighty Mukuru Wanderers on top of the TNM Super League log table as they recorded a 3-1 win over Moyale Barracks at Kamuzu Stadium on Saturday.

The People’s team got off to the perfect start in the fifth minute courtesy of Lanjesi Nkhoma’s goal who connected well a brilliant pass from Patrick Mwawungulu.

Hassan Kajoke continued the script for a perfect afternoon for the Ndirande outfit as he sublimely flicked the ball into Moyale Barracks’ net after receiving an assist from man of the match Lanjesi Nkhoma in the 17th minute.

Moyale had a chance to get an equaliser in the 32nd minute through Henry Misinjo but his shot was blocked by Bullets defender Clyde Senaji before the Kenyan blocked yet another shot by the soldiers three minutes later.

Moyale made two substitutions a minute before half time, bringing in Prince Phiri and former Bullets and Sable Farming defender George Nyirenda for Henry Misinjo and Lovemore Jere.

Anthony Mfune scored Bullets’ third goal and his first goal of the season in the 65th minute with a cool finish inside the box after yet another brilliant assist by Nkhoma.

The visitors got their consolation in the 68th minute through Raphael Phiri who connected well a Brown Maganga’s free kick.

In other matches played on Saturday, Blue Eagles thumped Chitipa United 3-1 while Civil Service United and Moyale Barracks drew 1-1 at Civo Stadium.

Bullets are now on top with 10 points followed by Wanderers who are second with 9 points but the Lali Lubani boys have played a game less than Bullets who have so far played four games.

Silver Strikers are third with 7 points points while Karonga United and Blue Eagles are fourth and fifth respectively with 5 points.
