Malawi expecting trade boom following the enhancement of buy Malawi strategy

By Wadza Botomani

Those people in manufacturing businesses such as furniture, alcoholic beverages, leather and food related materials should hope for a wider smile because the Buy Malawi strategy is no longer a just laughing matter.

For a long time Buy Malawi strategy has been used as a campaign tool by the previous regimes.

However the Malawi leader President Chakwera has spoken with vigour and energy that the behavior of buying everything outside the country leaving out our own manufacturing industry folding their companies is now water under the bridge.

“In March last year, I spoke about the need to support the local industry by encouraging the local buying of materials for Government officers such as police uniforms. Yet just last week, uniforms for police officers were captured at the airport, which means some in our midst do not take this policy seriously.

“But the policy remains in force. Unless you have a special waiver from my office, the procurement of uniforms by Government from outside the country is banned forthwith. I also order the Ministry of Trade and Industry to release a full list of products subject to a similar ban,” said Chakwera.

The Malawi Leader has since discouraged the behaviour of exporting more legumes without tracking its forex.

“Another Ministry that we will
leverage to transform our economy into a productive one is Trade and Industry. It is not acceptable that Malawi exports huge volumes of crops such as legumes to our neighbouring countries and beyond
with little to no forex coming back into our economy.

“To reverse this trend, I have appointed a new Minister of Trade and Industry to work jointly with other agencies in deploying a rapid strategy that tracks the exportation of produce, while my Administration continues to make progress in establishing a digital platform for marking and tracking all commodities
traded in our economy,” the President told Parliament.

However, Namalomba attributed his loss to alleged voter manipulation by his contender.

“Today I stood for the election of Chairperson of Transport and Public Infrastructure Committee of Parliament. Unfortunately I lost 5 to 11 votes to a member from the government side. In a democracy such as ours where those with cash and power, easily find their way into public office, my loss with 5 votes is a big achievement and I thank all my fellow DPP members of Parliament as led by the Leader Opposition for the support they rendered to me. Ine ndilibe golide!!!” wrote said the defeated lawmaker.

The Chief Resident Magistrate Court in Lilongwe is today hearing oral submissions for Henry Mussa and Gideon Munthali, former Minister and Director of Information who we were convicted for stealing computers and a generator meant for the Ministry of Information worth K10.1 million.

Judge Patrick Chirwa sitting as Chief Resident Magistrate is the one hearing the submissions.

In its submission, the state argues that the two committed a serious offence despite the fact that they are first offenders.

It is alleged that on May 2, 2019, Munthali received 10 computers and three generators donated from MACRA.

He informed Ministry officials about this through a WhatsApp forum the same day.

Munthali took the items to the Ministry headquarters on May 3 where Deputy Director of Administration, Mr Nankhuni, advised him to keep the items due to concerns over security at the ministry.

Munthali then decided to keep the items in his vehicle.

According to Munthali, Mussa kept on asking about the items and the then minister was also pushing him to make sure that the items were not distributed.

He added that the former minister wanted him to deliver the items at his place.

Munthali said he delivered the nine computers and one generator to Mussa at his Area 11 house on June 19.

The other two generators were delivered to the ministry’s offices in Mzuzu and Lilongwe

He, however, argued that he did not conspire with Mussa to steal the donated items.

Meanwhile, the two were found guilty of conspiracy to commit a felony on October 25,2022.

Court set free Police officer found not guilty of defilement case

The Senior Resident Magistrate Court in Lilongwe on Wednesday acquitted a 33-year-old Chiponda Kalawa after finding him not guilty of the offense of defilement.

Kalawa was arrested on 07 October 2021 in Lilongwe on suspicion that he defiled a 16-year-old girl.

Upon his arrest, it was alleged that the accused, who is a police officer, went to the house of the victim, as she was staying with her mother, and forced himself on her.

According to state witnesses who were paraded, the accused went to the house after being sent by the girl’s father to facilitate the collection of the girl’s clothes from a man called Allan, who is said to have gotten possession of them.

While at the house, it is alleged that Kalawa took the girl into her bedroom for questioning, and while there, he had sex with her.

The accused denied the allegations and after all state witnesses were paraded, he was found with a case to answer. At that time, Kalawa sought legal representation from Legal Aid Bureau, and the matter was taken up by Senior Legal Aid Advocates Clive Chiudzu and Chikondi Kambuwa.

In defense, Chiponda Kalawa maintained his stand that he was not guilty of the said offense leveled against him.

He explained to the court that the girl’s father called him to his house saying his young daughter was married and he should assist in bringing her back home.

He said he did not defile the girl and he only did what his friend (the girl’s father) asked him to do.

After hearing from both sides, His Worship Senior Resident Magistrate Wanangwa Nyirenda ruled that a medical report brought by the state was not conclusive.

The report proved penetration, but the girl had sexual partners and hence could not clearly point out that the accused was responsible for the said sexual encounter.

Further evidence from one of the state witnesses was that the girl has never had sex with anyone, but the medical report proved otherwise.

The credibility of evidence from the state was therefore not believable and the court further found that evidence from the police was inconsistent.

The court, therefore, acquitted Kalawa. After staying in custody since 2021, he is now a free man.
