The Ministry of Labour says the delay in intern’s monthly stipend of those who were engaged on graduate internship programme is due to technical challenges recently experienced the system used for processing payments.
In a statement dated October 7,2021, and signed by secretary for labour Dickson Chunga, the Ministry says it is now actively working with other Government institutions so as to address the challenge as soon as possible.

Malawi Government hired thousands of interns earlier this year and they were deployed in ministries and departments across the country.
One of the Malawi’s largest mattress manufacturing companies, Robray Limited says plans are in pipeline to increase price of it’s products with immediate effect.
In a letter dated October 7, 2021, the company says the changes are due to increase of raw material prices and devaluation in currency and assures that the discount will remain the same.

Ambassador of Norway to Malawi, Steinar Hagen has underscored the relevance of promoting women in Malawi saying it is essential for the country’s economic, political and social development.
Hagen made these remarks at Hangarawe in the area of Senior Chief Wasambo on Thursday as he was appreciating how Women Empowerment Project whose implementing partner was Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP) under United Nations (UN) Women with support from Norwegian Government was ran in Karonga from 2018 to 2020.
In an interview, Hagen described the project as satisfying and a way to go for the development of the nation. He said: “When women come into the economic, social and political activities, the country moves forward, so the project is very impressing because I have seen that everyone is working towards this goal and the testimonies from ladies who participated in politics are so impressing.”
He has since pointed out that there is need to get the women participation and representation percentage up from where it is. “We have heard that now women are able to participate in Village Development Committees (VDC) and Area Development Committees (ADC), so we need to get the percentage up as there is need for women to participate more because this is needed for the development of Malawi,” he said.
On her part, UN Women country representative to Malawi, Clara Anyangwe hailed Norwegian embassy and said there is progress towards empowering women while stressing that the environment is unfavourable. “We really thank the Norwegian embassy for the support towards women empowerment and we are making progress though it is slow due to the unfavourable environment, such as negative social norms,” she said. Commenting on the matter, Director of Gender Affairs in the Ministry of Gender Community Development and Social Welfare, Alice Mkandawire described the project as a good initiative as women have been empowered and are now able to participate in different activities in communities.
Giving her testimony and experience, one of the women who contested as a councillor during the 2019 tripartite elections, Councillor for Nyungwe Ward in Karonga Nyungwe Constituency, Ethel Mwanza said having been enlightened on the ability to participate, she could not hastate. “We learnt that we are capable agents of development in different communities in the country, so with an aim of developing my area, I decided to contest and I am now able to withstand any pressure from men,” she said.
From the trainings of the project, ADCs and VDCs have been able to engage in budget formulation using Gender Responsive Budgeting principles, 1 female councillor was elected in Karonga and other women are able to participate and represent others in different activities.
Malawi National Women’s Football Team, The Scorchers, are through to the finals of this year’s Cosafa Women’s Championship after beating defending champions South Africa 3-2 in the semi-final match played on Thursday afternoon at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in South Africa.
Malawi scored first in the 38 minute through Fazila Chembekezo but South Africa leveled the scores 8 minutes later through Sibulele Holweni.
Scorchers’ second goal came in the second half at 73rd minute through Sabina Thom but Holweni again cancelled the lead in the 80th minute before Thom came with the winner in the 85th minute.
Speaking after the game Scorchers coach McNerbet Kadzuwa, said he was very excited with the victory and said the team will do everything possible to bring the cup home.
The Scorchers will now play Tanzania in the final match on Saturday.
Meanwhile president Lazarus Chakwera has congratulated the team for the victory.
Tanzania reached the final after beating Zambia 3-2 on post match penalties after a 1-1 draw in regulation time.
Former President Peter Mutharika’s security aide Norman Chisale’s Certificate case is expected to proceed in the Lilongwe Senior Residents Magistrate – SRM Court, as High Court Judge Annabel Mtalimanja has dismissed Chisale’s two applications that were seeking staying of the case.
Chisale who was seeking leave to appeal to the Supreme Court against the Order by the High Court to review proceedings currently ongoing in the SRM Court, also applied for an order to stay the proceedings in the SRM Court pending determination of his proposed appeal.

But in her ruling, Judge Mtalimanja has dismissed the applications which means Chisale cannot appeal to Supreme Court against the decision of court to continue with his certificate case hearing.
While observing that Chisale had not filed grounds for the said proposed Appeal, Judge Mtalimanja has deemed his application as incompetent.
