Nyangulu hits hat-trick as Wanderers reach FDH Cup quarter-finals

A perfect hat-trick from Vincent Nyangulu helped Mighty Wanderers overcome Chitipa United 4-0 and cruise into the FDH Cup quarter-finals.

Nyangulu scored his first for the day just five minutes into the game before his glanced header that saw the Nomads leading 2-0 in the 37 minute.

Nyangulu completed his hat-trick in the second half before Peter Wadabwa hit the last nail in Chitipa United’s coffin in the 88th minute.

Speaking after the game, Mighty Wanderers Assistant coach Albert Mpinganjira said he was delighted with the victory and that the team will try as much as possible to win the inaugural K90 million cup. He said, ” I would like to thank the boys for putting up a spirited performance. We had a plan and the team played according to the plan. I am very happy,”



Chitipa United team manager Watson Kawaye accepted defeat saying Wanderers were just a better side on the day.
“They were very strong in the midfield where we kept on loosing balls. We tried to make afew changes in the second half but to no avail. Wanderers really out played us today,” he said.

In another round of 16 match, goals from the in-form Frank Banda and Duncan Nyoni were enough to take Silver Strikers into the quarter-finals as they beat Moyale Barracks 2-0.

In Mzuzu, veteran defender Harry Nyirenda scored the only goal of the match which helped
Ekwendeni Hammers beat Wanderers Reserves 1-0 at Mzuzu Stadium.

Saturday’s results means Wanderers, Silver and Ekwendeni have joined Mafco, Ntopwa FC and Rumphi United in the quarter-finals.

On Sunday, Nyasa Big Bullets will take on Tigers FC at Kamuzu Stadium while the area 30 side Blue Eagles FC face Dedza Young Soccer at Nankhaka Stadium.

Onesimus Unveiled As Brand Ambassador For Amaryllis Hotel

Popular music star, Sopani Kalua populary known as Onesimus in music circles, has been unveiled as the brand ambassador for Amaryllis Hotel to promote tourism and culture.

This was made known to the media at an event that took place at the hotel in Blantyre on Friday

Officials at the hotel says the choice of the musician was because he is hardworking and also one of best in the Malawian music industry.

Onesimus in his speech said he was glad to be identified with the brand. He said, ” I am so excited to have been given this new role. I will try my best to reach out to as many people as possible for them to appreciate the beauty of the hotel and Malawi as a country.”

Onesimus who left the country in 2013 for South Africa, is also expected to perform at his home coming concert scheduled for September 25 at Lilongwe Golf Club.

He is currently signed to Muthaland Entertainment of South Africa and has been performing in countries like Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia and Zambia.

The Solomon hit-maker has also worked with some of the Africa’s big names such as Nigerian star Tekno on the song Foyu and South African Vusi Nova on the song Maria.

Tributes Pour In For Fallen Veteran Musician Jomo Nkunika Of ‘The Springs’

Music fanatics are mourning following the death of veteran US-based gospel musician Jomo Nkunika in Mexico on Friday.

Nkunika came in the limelight in the early 2000 whilst doing his studies at the Polytechnic when his group ‘The Springs’ released hit songs Mloleni Alamulire and Ndifunitsa Kumtsata.

Social media activist Onjezani Kenani said he was saddened with Nkunika’s passing.

“Truly shaken on hearing the news of Jomo Nkunika’s passing. He was about 42 years old. We were in college in the same years. A quiet but brilliant man, an instinctive contemplative. Multitalented too.”

Renowned engineer Mathews Mtumbuka described him as a cheerful person
“He loved everyone at Poly and everyone loved Jomo at Poly. He always smiled and we always smiled at and with him. Rest in peace.”

One of the Malawians in the diaspora, Patrick Kanyimbo described Nkunika as a “wonderful person”

“I do recall he needed to access treatment for ALS outside the US. So sad to learn of his passing. Such a wonderful soul. May the Lord comfort his young family.”

One of Nkunika’s former school mate Oscar Lemon says Nkunika was a multitalented person.He wrote on Facebook, “Sleep well Jomo.. My school mate, my hommie.. Very humble and multi talented.. Anyone with springs song. Plz especially the track Jomo was a lead vocalist “tamkondwa kuchanya” in the song Jomo sang kumwamba kulije matenda, kulije ukavu.”

Academically,Nkunika had several qualifications including a Master of Science Degree in Health Care Administration which he obtained at University of Maryland, Global Campus.

He was also an active member of Cedarbrook community church in Clarksburg Maryland, USA, where he played piano in the worship team.

He survived by a wife, Dalitso and two children Josh and Jolisa.

Police Arrest 269 For Defying Covid-19 Rules And Regulations

About 269 individuals have been arrested for defying Covid-19 Rules and Regulations, Police says.

National Police Spokesperson James Kadadzera told 247 Malawi that the 269 were arrested on Tuesday across the country.

According to Kadadzera most of the people arrested faced the courts in the afternoon hours and have been found guilty and sentenced accordingly.

He further warned that Police will continue enforcing “operation Vala Mask” exercise to ensure that Malawians are adhering to COVID-19 Rules and Regulations.

Khungekile Matiya Not Seeking Re-election As NAM President

Netball Association of Malawi(NAM) president Khungekile Madise Matiya says she will not contest in the forthcoming elections slated to take place on August 7 in Salima.

Matiya said this in a statement released on Tuesday evening.

In the statement Matiya says she wishes best of luck to all those vying for various positions in the elections.

Reads the statement in part,
“I am writing to you in relation to (NAM)Executive Committee elections.
Before the postponement of the elections in May 2021,I had expressed interest
to contest for the Presidency ,and indeed I was nominated for the same.”

Mariya , not seeking re-election

“However, I have reconsidered my position and have decided not to contest in
the upcoming elections scheduled for 7 August 2021.”

Matiya who also served as General Secretary for Netball Africa and Southern Region Netball League (SRNL), says she will be available to assist the new executive committee in the transition.

Matiya, was nominated for the post of president alongside NAM’s former treasurer Abigail Shariff and former Malawi Queens captain Emmie Waya-Chongwe.
