National Bank of Malawi (NBM) plc has committed K11.2 million to the Senior Golfers Society of Malawi to support its 2025 Golf Tournament and Annual General Meeting (AGM) scheduled for this weekend.

From the total amount, K5.2 million is cash, while K6 million has been spent on golf shirts for members to wear during the tournament.

Speaking during the cheque handover ceremony on Friday, NBM plc Pension Administration Limited (PAL) Chief Executive Officer (CEO), William Mabulekesi, stressed the Bank’s commitment to recognizing the contributions of senior golfers to Malawi’s development.

“These senior golfers have given so much to our country through their leadership, expertise, and mentorship. Many have guided individuals who now hold prominent positions in both the public and private sectors. Others were captains of industry and continue to mentor even in retirement. It is only fitting that we honour their legacy by supporting their activities.”

“We believe that giving back to the community also means supporting activities that promote wellness and engagement. Sports are an essential part of life. They allow individuals to relax, recharge, and maintain their health. We are proud to support golf as we already support women’s football, including the Scorchers team,” said Mabulekesi.

Senior Golfers Society Chairperson Eric Chinkanda expressed gratitude for the Bank’s support, noting the impact on both the association and its members.

“This year, NBM plc has stepped in, allowing us to host what we now proudly call the National Bank Senior Golfers Closed AGM Tournament. Their support ensures that our members can come together, celebrate achievements, share experiences, and plan for the year ahead. We hope this partnership will continue for many years,” said Chinkanda.

According to Chinkanda, the Society, which has membership from across the country, aims to foster networking, mentorship, and healthy engagement among retirees while exploring partnerships within the SADC region to exchange knowledge and best practices.

This year’s support from NBM plc marks the first corporate sponsorship the Society has received in three years.

He said Government is implementing measures of minimizing the gap between revenue and expenditure requirement by fully adopting a cash budgeting approach that strictly aligns funding with available resources rather than projected cash flows.

He said Government also intends to scrutinize the wage bill which stand taking away up almost 40 percent of the country’s domestic revenue.

“In this regard, as already announced by the Office of the President and Cabinet, Government has put a moratorium on new recruitments except for key sectors, which will be done on case by case basis. The moratorium will be longer for MDAs which had massive recruitments,” he said.

He said as part of revamping the economy, Government plans to put up measures of reducing over expenditure.

“Government will conduct payroll audit and headcount for all public servants starting from 9th December 2025. Therefore, all public servants will be required to present themselves physically for the headcount and submit all relevant documentation,” He said.

Some of the detailed expenditure control measures as announced by Government include only three external trips for Cabinet Ministers, Deputy Ministers, Controlling Officers, Chief Executive Officers and Senior Management of State own enterprises after seeking approval from the relevant authority.

Mwanamveka said all Controlling Officers of MDAs, Heads of SOEs, Chairpersons, Board Members and Executive Management will, with immediate effect, travel on economy class.

On procurement of motor vehicles, Mwanamveka said ,  Government has put a moratorium on procurement of new vehicles and high value assets until further notice.

He said on special cases, Controlling Officers are advised to seek approval from the Office of the President and Cabinet.

National Bank of Malawi (NBM) plc has donated K75.5 million to the ICT Association of Malawi (ICTAM) to support the 2025 Innovation Jam, extending a partnership that has now run for six years.

The Innovation Jam will run alongside the annual ICT conference from November 19 to 22, 2025 under the theme ‘AI for Sustainable Development’, reflecting the growing influence of artificial intelligence globally.

Speaking during the cheque handover ceremony on Monday, NBM plc’s Head of Digital Financial Services, William Kaunda, said the sponsorship aims to nurture emerging ideas within Malawi’s ICT sector.

Kaunda added that the Bank has signed a three-year memorandum of understanding (MoU) with ICTAM to ensure structured incubation of innovations arising from the Innovation Jam.

“With this MoU, we are committing to providing continuous support and guidance to the innovators over the next three years,” he said.

He also emphasized that the Bank’s digital drive and the increasing sophistication of cybercrime make artificial intelligence crucial.

“Artificial intelligence is no longer optional for us. To combat modern fraud and protect our customers, we need advanced AI tools to detect and prevent threats efficiently,” he said

ICTAM President, Clarence Gama, expressed gratitude for the Bank’s continued support.

“We are excited and grateful. The National Bank has held our hands for a very long time. This is a big testament to how the corporate sector is willing to drive technology and innovation in the country,” said Gama.
