Chakwera made the remarks during a virtual conference summit of Merck Foundation First Ladies (MFFLI) on Tuesday where she has been appointed as Ambassador of Merck More Than a Mother in Malawi.

Attended by 13 African First Ladies, the MFFLI conference was meant to discuss joint efforts to build healthcare capacity and strengthen the response to COVID-19 in countries and Africa at large.

Addressing the First Ladies present, Chakwera said she was happy to be appointed Ambassador of Merck More Than a Mother, an initiative that aims to improve the health and wellbeing of people and advance their lives through science and technology.

Chakwera committed to fully support the campaign as First Lady to help end stigma infertile women across nations are facing.

“As a woman, this cause is very close to my heart. I will work in collaboration with our ministries to sensitize our communities, particularly in rural areas to better understand infertility hence to break the stigma around infertile women,”said Chakwera.

She added that sensitisation can only be achieved if communities are empowered through access to information, education, health, and change of mindset.

“I am looking forward to building healthcare capacity in the country through the programs of Merck Foundation as it will contribute to the social and economic development of Malawi,”she said.

The Merck Foundation in partnership with Madame Chakwera and ministry of health intends to provide specialty training to Malawian doctors in various fields such as oncology, diabetes, fertility, embryology, respiratory care, acute medicines, sexual and reproductive medicines to transform public healthcare sector in Malawi.

On her part, CEO of Merck Foundation, Dr. Rasha Kelej said the organization was happy to partner with Madame Chakwera and underscored the long term commitment to build healthcare capacity, empower girls in education and break the stigma of infertility in Malawi.

She said the organization was very proud to appoint her as the Ambassador of Merck More Than a Mother as this will enable them to work very closely with her and the Government of Malawi.

“The appointment will enable us work closely with her and the government of Malawi and together we will make history by providing training for the first specialists in many fields such as fertility, sexual and Reproductive Medicines among others,”said Kelej.

Kelej also revealed that Merck Foundation together with the First Lady, will continue their important program, Educating Linda to sponsor the education of 20 best performing girls in their secondary schools till they graduate.

“I truly believe that education is power and educating girls is empowering them to make their own decisions, stand up for their rights, and help them access economic opportunities,”she said.

Kelej, nominated as one of 100 most influential Africans for 2019/2020, said the foundation will enroll the selected Malawian doctors by the First Lady office and ministry of health to their various training programs for the next 10 years.

Other attendees included First Ladies of Zimbabwe, Auxillia Mnangagwa, Esther Lungu of Zambia and Fatima Maada Bio of Sierra Leone, among others.

Sex allegations investigations sends MBC Sumbuleta on Leave

Embattled Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) director-general Aubrey Sumbuleta who is facing allegations of sexual coercion at the  public broadcaster has been sent of forced leave by the Government.

The arrest comes hot on the heels of an inquest by Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) into alleged sexual abuse tendencies by top managers at the parastatal

Sumbuleta

Minister of Information Gospel Kazako has confirmed that Sumbuleta has been sent on forced leave following complaints lodged by some members of staff at MBC. Kazako, who once worked at MBC, said the forced leave is meant to allow smooth investigations into the allegations of sexual misconduct.

“Yes, I can confirm Sumbuleta has been  placed on leave  until the investigation into the allegations has concluded,” said Kazako.

He recently appeared before MHRC on the same. Kazako said the force leave was appropriate “given the seriousness of the allegations” of sexual misconduct. Some female workers, including Catherine Kunje are believed to have lodged complaints to  authorities, including the Ombudsman, Martha Chizuma.

The Coalition for the Empowerment of Women and Girls (CEWAG) executive director, Beatrice Mateyo said cases of sexual harassment are rampant especially in government offices including the recent allegations at MBC which need to be duly addressed.

She petitioned the office of the  ombudsman to investigate the allegations/

“We want the Office of the Ombudsman to investigate the sexual misconduct allegations, so that at the end of the day the victims should receive justice and if the perpetrators are identified, they should be punished in accordance with the law,” explained Mateyo.

Mateyo said they have been assured by the Office of the Ombudsman that they will work together with  Malawi Human Rights Resources Centre (MHRRC)  to ensure that the issues are resolved accordingly.

The EU supports nutrition and social protection in Malawi with €39 million

As part of Team Europe’s response to COVID-19 in Malawi, the European Union has allocated €39 million to mitigate the negative effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. The funding will address the increasing needs of vulnerable parts of the population in the field of nutrition and social protection, including pregnant women and children.

Commissioner for International Partnerships, Jutta Urpilainen, said: “The COVID-19 pandemic risks wiping out in many countries any progress made in human development over the recent years. Together, as part of our Team Europe response, we are allocating €39 million to Malawi to boost nutrition and social protection among particularly vulnerable communities. As a former teacher myself, I am proud that, through this contribution, 280,000 pupils will be able to continue accessing school meals. This is key for their development and to their education.”

The pandemic has caused unprecedented challenges to Malawi due to the strained health care system and the effects of the containment measures. The most vulnerable have been most affected by food scarcity and an increase in food prices. For this reason, this additional Team Europe support focuses mainly on addressing the socio-economic consequences of the pandemic and will be composed of:

A €16 million top up for the Afikepo programme

This 16 million increase for the Afikepo programme (from €70 to €86 million), which in the local language of Chichewa means: “Let them [the children] develop to their full potential”, will allow 280,000 pupils to benefit from school meals in 200 primary schools in Malawi’s Southern region thanks to the programme. Smallholder farmers in the surrounding communities will be the principal suppliers of the food, contributing also to support the local agri-systems.

The programme contributes to improving the nutritional status of school-age children and to increasing income opportunities of the surrounding communities. As the pandemic is limiting access to health check-ups and malnutrition treatments, the EU support also includes COVID-19 prevention measures, such as improving access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene as well as behavioural change interventions to benefit school learners, their families and their entire communities. The World Food Programme, which has a longstanding partnership with the Government of Malawi on school feeding programmes, will implement the action.

A further €23 million for Social Cash Transfer programme for vulnerable communities

A further €23 million will be provided to support the National Social Cash Transfer Programme under the SoSuRe Programme (increasing the total funding from €50 to €73 million) to support vulnerable communities. Building on the lessons learned from the programme’s implementation to date, the additional support will allow to increase the number of beneficiaries in rural areas and extend it to urban vulnerable populations.

Currently, the National Social Cash Transfer Programme (SCTP) includes 65,000 households (269,666 individuals) in rural settings only. The monthly amount paid under the regular programme is MWK 9,500 (around €11/12) per month (paid every 2 months, so 6 times a year).

Rural support focuses on families who live on less than $2 a day and have limited capacity to access the labour market, for example elderly people, persons living with disabilities and single parent households.

As a response to the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact, the top up for the programme will allow to increase the number of regular beneficiaries of the programme in rural areas from 65,000 to 80,000 in the next year. Beneficiaries in rural areas will receive a temporary top-up of MWK 5,000 (€5/6) for 4 months.

In addition, 27,000 households in urban settings will receive a 3 months cash support (35,000 MWK, equivalent to €39 per month) to cushion the socioeconomic effects of COVID-19. The amount (35,000 MWK) is linked to the minimum salary in the country.

Urban beneficiaries will include households depending on daily work in the informal sector, who live from hand to mouth, and have now seen their livelihoods deeply affected by the COVID-19 crisis.

Support will be provided through cash transfers, which could serve to finance, for example, women’s economic and social empowerment, livelihood diversification among the vulnerable or food security. It is part of the EU support to strengthening social protection systems in Malawi. Germany and Ireland are also involved in the Social Cash Transfer Programme. The KfW Development Bank is the main implementing partner of this action.

The National Initiative for Civic Education (NICE) Trust has called on various electoral stakeholders especially political party representatives in Chikwawa to peacefully co-exist.

Communities in Makhuwira South Ward on November 10 this year will go to the polls to elect a councilor in by-elections following the death of Mannick Gannet who was local government representative for the area.

District Civic Education Officer for NICE in Chikwawa, Joseph Chamambala made the sentiments at the weekend during an interaction with candidates, traditional and religious leaders and area development committee representatives on conflict management at Mitondo Primary School.

“Basically, we are saying as we are going towards November 10 by-elections where Makhuwira South communities will elect a councilor, we want them to peacefully co-exist, they should be able to live in harmony irrespective of a political party they support,” he said.

“It is only through co-existence, and living in harmony that communities will go to different political party meetings to appreciate the ideologies through candidates’ different manifestos,” he added.

Chamambala called on the candidates and the political party representatives to value the importance of conducting a violent free campaign so that many people can go to attend their meetings.

A UTM candidate, Francesca Nyangulu said the meeting was an eye opener and beneficial.

“During the meeting, we tackled a number of issues such as conflict management in an electoral process. That has given me some idea on how to go about certain things in an electoral process,” Nyangulu said.

“I will advise my supporters to conduct peaceful and violent free campaigns. Above all, I have the confidence that come November 10th, I will carry the day,” she said.

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) candidate, Henry Tambu said he was impressed with the interface meeting, adding that conflict management in an electoral process was a tool to help conduct violent free elections.

“We can’t build a nation where there is violence. We need to conduct violent free campaign. I am one of the violent free candidates. On our part as DPP, we are ready; so far, so good,” Tambu said.

Five candidates from four political parties namely; UTM, DPP, United Democratci Front and Malawi Congress Party as well as an independent candidate are vying for the position of a councilor for Makhuwira South Ward.
