During his campaign tour in the northern region, Engineer Vitumbiko Mumba, who is running as the vice president to Dr. Lazarus Chakwera in the upcoming election, has called on the people of Jenda to vote for Dr. Lazarus Chakwera on September 16 if they want development to continue in their area.

He made these remarks in Jenda following concerns raised by local leaders, including GVH Muyunga Nkhata, who spoke on behalf of Chief Chinsolo Jere. The community is facing a critical shortage of clean water, and the Liwerezi area lacks a hospital.
Additionally, local parliamentarian Emmanuel Jere Chambulanyina complained about the conduct of some traders in Jenda who are selling fertilizer and sugar to people in Zambia instead of the local residents.
In response, Mumba stated that if people want clean water and a hospital in the area, they should vote for Dr. Chakwera to ensure the continuation of the development projects he has already begun.

Malawian competitive eater Spana has expressed gratitude for the financial support he has received from US-based Malawian, Chawezi Banda, popularly known as Chacha.
Speaking to 247 Malawi News, Spana said he was thankful for the K1.5 million donation that Chacha sent him to help cover his travel expenses.
“I was struggling to find money to buy my ticket to Nigeria where I will be competing in the upcoming fast-eating contest. This support has made it possible for me to represent Malawi on the international stage,” said Spana.
He further clarified that his mission is not to travel to Nigeria just for personal glory but also to showcase Malawian talent and prove to Nigerians that Malawi has strong contenders in speed-eating competitions.
Spana has already built a name for himself in the competitive eating scene, having participated and won several contests in South Africa.
His consistency and determination have made him one of the most recognized figures in this unusual but fast-growing sport.
The Nigeria contest, scheduled for September 6, 2025, is expected to attract participants from across Africa and beyond.
For Spana, it presents another opportunity to put Malawi on the map and inspire other young people to explore different talents that can take them abroad.
Minister of Agriculture, Sam Kawale has urged farmers in the country to adopt the news farming technologies that are resilient to climate change challenges so as to bring back the past glory of food security.
The minister said this in Blantyre on Friday during the launch of newly introduced Eagle Nano Urea Gold Fertilizer.
Kawale said the ministry thought of introducing the liquid fertilizer product on the market after research revealed that the product was environmental friendly to climate change challenges.
” The product has been fully tested and approved by government after a thorough research for two years. It has proved to be environmental friendly, cost effective and soil nutrient booster from 8 percent to 18 percent,” he said
Among others, Kawale said the liquid product would help the country reduce 70 percent demand for foreign exchange, labour and transportation cost challenges.
Kawale said the importation of one container for the product would substitute over fourty containers of chemical fertilizers that government used.
” Farmers need just to change their mindset by embracing this new innovative technologies that can go along the way to increase their production so as to help reduce food insecurity challenges that have come due to the increased high costs of chemical fertilizers on the global market due to dual politics,” he said
According to Kawale, government has also approved to include the Eagle Nano liquid fertilizer during this year’s Affordable Input Programme( AIP).
The agriculture minister further disclosed that discussions were underway for the liquid fertilizer to be manufactured within the country so as to cut foreign exchange challenges and transportation.
The Eagle Nano Urea gold fertilizer is currently being distributed in India by Ray Nano research centre and is being distributed in the country by Paramount Holdings Limited.
Speaking in a separate interview, the managing director for Paramount Holdings Limited Prakash Ghedia described the product as a game changer towards the country’s road to food and nutrition security.
Ghedia said since the the half acre liquid fertilizer product was introduced in India,the food security and adoption rate have been increasing yearly.
Ghedia said his company has also entered into the memorandum of understanding with the agro dealers association of Malawi for a countrywide distribution of the product.
A farmer from Nema farm seeds in Lilongwe, Brighton Maonga said since they started using the product, their produced has doubled as compared to the use of chemical fertilizers.
Maonga however, asked the distributors to enhance awareness strategies to ensure increased adoption rate.
” As a new technology, there is need for increased awareness to change the mindset of farmers, otherwise, this will be another white elephant, ” he said.
Eagle Nano liquid Urea fertilizer is currently being sold at Mk65,000.
A group of suspected Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) supporters on Saturday reportedly attacked Malawi Congress Party (MCP) followers in Mtandire Township, Lilongwe, leaving several people injured and properties destroyed.
Eyewitnesses say the attackers arrived in lorries, armed with pangas, sticks, and other crude weapons.
They allegedly tore down MCP flags and campaign banners before physically assaulting those found at the scene.
One eyewitness, Jones Phiri, told our reporter that the MCP supporters who were present attempted to resist but were overpowered.
“They tried to defend themselves, but the group was too large and aggressive. In the end, some of them sustained injuries,” he narrated.
Local leader George Zulu, who represents the Mtandire-Mtsiriza area, has condemned the violence, stressing the need for political tolerance.
“We cannot allow politics to divide us and cause bloodshed. What we need now is peace and unity, regardless of which party one supports,” he said.
The incident comes just hours before a planned DPP mass rally at Chilimampunga Ground in Lilongwe, where party president and former head of state Peter Mutharika is expected to address his supporters.
Meanwhile, efforts to get a comment from DPP spokesperson Shadreck Namalomba proved futile as he could not be reached.
The MCP leadership has also not yet issued an official statement on the matter.
Police in Lilongwe are yet to confirm the number of casualties or arrests made.
