By Burnett Munthali

Minister of Local Government Richard Chimwendo Banda has described President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera as a champion of development.

He made the remarks in Blantyre at Njamba, where President Chakwera held a rally today.

Chimwendo highlighted a number of projects that have been implemented under the Chakwera administration.

These include good road networks, clean water supply, health posts, cancer treatment facilities, and additional classroom blocks.

He emphasized that these developments demonstrate the President’s commitment to improving the lives of Malawians.

Senior Chief Kapena of Blantyre also commended President Chakwera for the progress made under his leadership.

The Chief particularly mentioned the 200-hectare Mkawinda Irrigation Scheme, which she said will play a key role in addressing food insecurity.

In his own address, President Chakwera said that economic freedom is one of the most powerful tools for transforming people’s lives.

He pledged that his administration will ensure prices of essential commodities are reduced.

He also promised to expand the National Economic Empowerment Fund (NEEF) so that more Malawians can benefit.

The President further assured citizens that his government will support vulnerable families facing hunger due to drought by providing maize and rice.

Chakwera appealed to Malawians to remain peaceful as the country approaches the elections.

*Conclusion*

The statements made at Njamba underline the Chakwera administration’s narrative of development and social empowerment.

By emphasizing infrastructure, health, education, and food security, the President and his ministers are positioning themselves as responsive to the needs of ordinary Malawians.

The Mkawinda Irrigation Scheme, in particular, symbolizes a push toward long-term agricultural resilience.

However, promises such as reducing commodity prices and expanding NEEF will require strong policy frameworks and fiscal discipline to achieve.

As elections draw closer, Malawians will weigh these achievements and pledges against the economic challenges they continue to face.

The coming months will therefore test whether the message of development resonates strongly enough to secure renewed confidence in President Chakwera’s leadership.

The Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Diaspora Network has urged Malawians to elect President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera and his running mate, Engineer Vitumbiko Mumba, in the upcoming presidential election.

The call was made during a virtual press briefing convened by the network’s leadership on Saturday. MCPDN chairperson George Limbani Phiri stated the diaspora’s position was the result of a careful evaluation of the nation’s current situation and the alternatives available.

Phiri argued that Malawi requires continuity for stability. On the economy, MCP Namibia Wing Director Dr. Ausbert Msusa emphasized that despite global shocks, President Chakwera’s leadership has provided steady governance.

MCPDN Secretary General Rev Mphatso Mainala pointed to global challenges, including COVID-19 and the war in Ukraine, as primary drivers of recent economic turbulence, asserting the administration had steered the country onto a path of recovery. The network dismissed the main opposition for failing to demonstrate meaningful change and described emerging parties as lacking necessary experience.

Responding to questions on pressing economic concerns like forex shortages and inflation, Phiri acknowledged the challenges but defended the government’s response. He cited engagements with the IMF and debt restructuring as necessary reforms. He added that the diaspora is part of the solution through remittances and investments.

MCP 2nd Deputy Director of International Affairs Chalo Mvula clarified that their support was a considered decision based on the need for stability, which he stated President Chakwera provides.

The briefing included contributions from MCP RSA Wing Director Phaskani Msiska. In his closing remarks, Rev. Phiri called for national unity, urging Malawians at home and abroad to reject division and embrace a future of hope and prosperity under President Chakwera’s continued leadership.

Umodzi Holdings has recorded a K1 billion profit in the first quarter of this year, remitting K400 million to government as its shareholder.

Board chairperson Misheck Esau announced the results on Friday following a board meeting, noting that the company has steadily grown since reclaiming management from previous operators in 2015.

He highlighted that the firm, which once struggled with losses and debts of up to K10 billion, has since cleared its obligations and turned profitable.

“In the 2024–2025 financial year that has just closed, we made K3.4 billion profit after tax, representing growth of over 80 percent compared to the K1.9 billion profit after tax posted in 2023–2024,” said Esau.

The firms Chief Executive Officer (CEO ) Steve Lwanda attributed the improved performance to stronger management practices.

“We controlled a lot of expenditure and shifted focus from accommodation to the conference side. We also tightened cost controls while maximizing revenue,” he said.

Lwanda, however, cautioned that rising costs of food and utilities continue to pose a challenge despite the positive outlook.

Group raises concerns over impact of opinion polls on voter turnout

A group calling itself ‘Independent Civil Society’ has warned that opinion polls released close to general elections may lead to the low turnout on the voting day.

Speaking at a press briefing in Mzuzu on Saturday, the group leader,Ceaser Kondowe, acknowledged that opinion polls play an important role in democratic discourse but warned against their misuse to pre-empt voters.

Said Kondowe:“While opinion polls are important, they should not be used in a way that discourages people from voting.

“We saw in 2019 that only 74.9 percent of registered voters turned up for the polls, and in 2020, the figure dropped further to 64.81 percent.”

He stressed that opinion polls must be conducted professionally, with proper sampling methods, to avoid misleading the public.

“These surveys have the potential to create voter apathy because people may feel the outcome is already predetermined,” added Kondowe .

The remarks come in the wake of an Institute of Public Opinion and Research (IPOR) pre-election survey, which shows that president Lazarus Chakwera has enjoyed a post-nomination boost ahead of the September 16 General Election.

According to the findings, Chakwera of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has gained five percentage points, while his main challenger, former president Peter Mutharika of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), has dropped by two percentage points compared to previous survey results.
