By Linda Kwanjana

The Member of Parliament for Lilongwe Mpenu Elsenhower Mduwa Mkaka has hailed President Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera for the development projects under implementation in his constituency.

Speaking in an exclusive interview , Mkaka who is also a former Secretary General for the Malawi Congress Party gave an example of the K300Million Chigodi health centre project currently underway in his constituency.

The former SG said the starting point should be the President’s vision saying the President wants health facilities every five kilometers.

Mlaka and President Chakwera

“Now in my constituency,  people have been going to Kamphata health center. So the next Health Center was at the honorable Ching’oma  constituency, another one was at Diamphwi, a boundary with Dedza, and you can see that there was a gap. There was some shortage of health services making people to travel long distances. And hence, as a Member of Parliament for the area, I needed to facilitate implementation of such a project. The state president is commended for this vision,” he said.

Mkaka added that Malawi is lucky to have a president like Chakwera who is doing everything possible just to be on the ground.

“All he is doing is to make sure that he does things on the ground, and people with eyes will see that the President is doing something, and the President is doing things through us, his members of parliament. So yes, like what I said in Parliament, when the President listed down things that he’s done over the past five years, so many things that he didn’t say, like, the things that are happening in my constituency, this health center, was not included in that State Of the Nation Address (SONA),” he said.

Mkaka challenged those punching holes into Chakwera’s SONA to shut up.

“So whilst people tried to punch holes to find fault with the President’s statement, the truth is that the President has done much more than he listed down,” he said.

Mkaka further said that there is much more that the President has done, and he must be commended for that.

“So yes, the message is simple, the President is doing a lot. He has done a lot, despite the challenging environment in which he has operated since he took over the reins of power,” he summer up.

The former SG says this facility will benefit 30, 000 people from his constituency.

By Jones Gadama

A devastating incident occurred on Saturday night at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra, Ghana, when Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju collapsed during a light heavyweight international contest against Ghanaian opponent Jon Mbanugu.

Despite efforts to resuscitate him, Olanrewaju was pronounced dead 30 minutes after arrival at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.

The Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) has released an official statement confirming the death of Olanrewaju, who was declared medically fit by the Nigeria Boxing Board of Control (NBBC) before the fight.

The statement, signed by Mohammed Amin Lamptey, Director of Communication for the GBA, provided details of the incident and expressed condolences to the NBBC and the boxing community.

According to eyewitnesses, Olanrewaju dominated the fight from the opening round, but suddenly stepped back and leaned on the ropes with his back without being punched by his opponent.

The referee, Richard Amevi, sensing danger, immediately stopped the fight and summoned the ringside physician and paramedics to attend to the boxer.

The GBA president, Abraham Kotei Neequaye, was present at the scene and ensured that Olanrewaju received prompt medical attention.

He also reported the incident to the Korle Bu police station and helped to move the body to the main mortuary for preservation.

The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Hon Kofi Iddie Adams, was formally informed of the incident by the GBA president.

The boxing community in Ghana and Nigeria has been left in shock and mourning, with many paying tribute to Olanrewaju’s skills and potential in the ring.

Olanrewaju’s record stood at 23 fights, with 13 victories, 8 defeats, and 2 draws. Twelve of his victories came by way of knockout.

His death has raised concerns about fighter safety and the importance of adequate medical care in professional boxing.

The GBA has promised to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and to provide support to Olanrewaju’s family.

The boxing community will come together to pay tribute to Olanrewaju’s memory and to reflect on the risks and sacrifices made by boxers in the pursuit of their sport.

As the news of Olanrewaju’s death continues to spread, the boxing world is left to mourn the loss of a talented and promising young boxer.

His death serves as a poignant reminder of the dangers and uncertainties of the sport, and the importance of prioritizing fighter safety and well-being.

In the words of the GBA statement, “Death is indeed unknown, and you never know where it will catch up with you.

May the soul of Gabriel Oluwasengu and all other boxers who died in similar circumstances rest in perfect peace.”

Zimbabwe teeters on brink of chaos as President Mnangagwa’s collapse sparks power struggle

By Jones Gadama

In a stunning and alarming turn of events, Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa reportedly collapsed during a high-level meeting at State House, sending shockwaves throughout the nation’s political landscape.

The incident has exposed deep-seated divisions within the ruling ZANU-PF party and raised grave concerns about the stability of Zimbabwe’s government.

According to sources close to the presidency, Mnangagwa, 82, suddenly fell ill during a tense discussion with Vice President Constantino Chiwenga over the president’s alleged attempts to secure a third term in office.

Mnangagwa

Eyewitnesses describe a chaotic scene as Mnangagwa slumped in his chair, while Chiwenga’s heavily armed security team formed a barrier, preventing the president’s medical staff from approaching.

This dramatic incident comes amid escalating tensions between Mnangagwa and Chiwenga, with the latter reportedly rallying support from influential war veterans and military elites who feel sidelined by Mnangagwa’s consolidation of power.

The power struggle between the two leaders has been simmering for months, with Chiwenga’s faction strongly opposing Mnangagwa’s alleged bid to extend his rule beyond the constitutional two-term limit.

As news of Mnangagwa’s collapse spread, Harare was gripped by fear, with military vehicles spotted moving through the capital, reminiscent of the events that led to Robert Mugabe’s ouster in 2017.

Government spokesperson Nick Mangwana attempted to downplay the situation, insisting that the increased military presence was part of a pre-planned exercise.

However, his assurances have done little to calm the populace, which is already on edge due to recent calls for nationwide protests against Mnangagwa’s rule.

The timing of this incident is critical, coming just days before planned demonstrations on March 31, organized by war veteran Blessed “Bombshell” Geza.

Geza has been in hiding since calling for Mnangagwa’s resignation and has accused the president of fostering corruption and neglecting the populace.

Mnangagwa’s collapse has also brought attention to the power struggle between him and Vice President Constantino Chiwenga.

Chiwenga is widely seen as the frontrunner to succeed Mnangagwa, but the president’s loyalists are pushing for him to extend his rule beyond 2028.

The situation in Zimbabwe remains volatile, with the international community watching with growing concern.

The African Union and Southern African Development Community have yet to intervene, but diplomatic sources suggest mounting worry over Zimbabwe’s stability.
