Dowa District Water Office appreciates WASH partners support

By Vincent Gunde

The Dowa District Council’s Water Development Office has expressed its appreciation to Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) partners in the district for doing a commendable job to make sure that communities in the district are accessing improved water availability.

The Dowa District Council has developed the District Systems Investment Plan (DSIP) as a targeted framework to operationalize key WASH priorities outline in the District Development Plan (DDP) to enhance planning, implementation and monitoring WASH interventions.

The DSIP responds directly to the District Development Plan’s objective of improving public health and human development through better service delivery as it is linked to enabler 5 of the Malawi 2063 Human Capital Development focusing on WASH services.

Fanny Muula-WASH partners have registered remarkable achievements in their catchment areas.

Presenting the WASH District Coordinating Team (DCT) progress Report, District Water Development Officer for Dowa Fanny Muula, said 69 percent of the population in the district is using safe and sustainable water supply in communities and institutions.

Muula said behind every percentage point is a family who now drinks safe water, a school girl who no longer misses class due to poor sanitation, and a community empowered to sustain their gains saying WASH partners are complimenting government efforts towards improvement of WASH services.

She said WASH partners such as Self Help Africa, Orant Charities, Beyond Water, World Vision, Red Cross, Pump Aid, and others, have drilled and rehabilitated boreholes, providing piped water systems and reticulated solar power as well as constructing latrines to the communities in the district.

The Water Officer said WASH partners are reaching out to wherever there is need for boreholes and rehabilitations, constructing latrines in schools, distribution of sanitation materials, and training masons and sales agents across the five Traditional Authority areas of the district, among others.

“Each WASH partner has registered remarkable achievement per the area of Traditional Authority in water supply progress and sanitation,” said Muula.

However, Muula said WASH partners are meeting some challenges in the course of implementing their interventions such as geological formations in T/A Chiwere and Mkukula are contributing to an increase in dry wells and that there have been delays in project completion by some drilling contractors particularly those involved in government-funded initiatives.

Muula called on WASH partners in the district on the need to follow up on post ODF activities observing that the absence of such interventions after ODF Declaration leads communities to revert to previous Open Defecation Free (ODF) practices.

Kamlepo Kalua announces joining demonstrations in 7 days coming

Politician Kamlepo Kalua, has announced that he is joining the demonstrations coming in 7 days -time to show Malawians that he is one of the people who brought multiparty democracy in Malawi.

Kalua said in 1994 Malawians made a declaration that never again shall their country go back to one-party state and dictatorship saying his joining the demonstrations coming is a clear indication that those who fought for democracy to come to Malawi, they did their struggle for a purpose.

He has told former President Dr. Bakili Muluzi to come to Lilongwe to join him in the demonstrations as one who championed democracy to come to Malawi so that they start their journey together from where activist Sylvester Namiwa was left half-dead after being heavily assaulted by MCP thugs in full view of Malawi Police and Malawi Defense Force (MDF) officers who did not rescue him while in the hands of the attackers.

Speaking through an audio clip, Kalua has warned President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera that he is joining that person on the road that says he is ready to die for Malawi assuring him that he is going to the road to be killed in defense of the hard-won democracy.

Kalua said he is coming to the road to match with that person who has told Malawians that he will die for Malawi, saying he will not carry with him any offensive weapon, he will carry only his trouser and a shirt for the killers to easily chop his legs and hands.

He said he wants to see how the MCP is killing people in a country of democracy saying his coming to the road is not threatening anyone, but to tell the killers that him also is ready to be killed just the same as others are being killed in the country.

“I will be with that person who told Malawians that he is ready to die for Malawi not to die alone, I will tell the killers to kill there where Namiwa was brutally assaulted for my blood to be used as a sacrifice for the country and the 16th September, 2025 elections,” said Kalua.

He has advised the Malawi Police Service (MPS) and Malawi Defense Force (MDF) to be ready for him as he is joining Malawians on the road in a quest to defend the hard-won democracy which the MCP has thrown it to the dogs.
