DPP Condemns MCP  of exploiting Mutharika name

0

By Burnett Munthali

On January 14, 2025, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) released a statement condemning the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) for allegedly exploiting the name of President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika for political gains. At the center of the controversy is a man named Samuel Thom Mutharika, who recently joined the MCP at a rally while claiming to be a relative of the late President Dr. Bingu wa Mutharika and the current DPP President, Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika.

Shadric Namalomba, MP and DPP’s National Publicity Secretary, categorically dismissed Samuel Thom Mutharika’s claims as fraudulent. The statement labeled him an “imposter” with no connection to the Mutharika family. Namalomba described the actions of Mr. Thom as identity fraud, stating:

Namalomba

> “At the age of 60, this man suddenly appeared, pretending to be a member of the Mutharika family, but he had no evidence to back up his claims. It is not the first time he has allowed himself to be used by other politicians to target the Mutharikas.”

The statement also accused Mr. Thom of knowingly engaging in deceitful behavior to advance his agenda and align himself with the MCP.

The DPP’s statement went beyond addressing Mr. Thom’s actions, accusing the Malawi Congress Party of orchestrating the situation for political gain. Namalomba called on the MCP to desist from using “manipulative tactics” to tarnish the reputation of the Mutharikas and warned the party against further exploiting their name.

> “No amount of deceit can rescue your declining party,” Namalomba said, emphasizing that the DPP remains confident in Professor Mutharika’s leadership and his prospects for victory in the September 2025 elections.

To Samuel Thom Mutharika, the DPP issued a stern warning, demanding he cease his claims of affiliation with the Mutharika family. Namalomba described his actions as not only fraudulent but deeply disrespectful to the Mutharika name.

> “Your actions are not only fraudulent but also disrespectful to their name. Stop trying to present yourself as a member of the Mutharika family.”

The statement concluded with a declaration of confidence in Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika’s leadership, describing him as the key to Malawi’s prosperity.

> “Regardless of any malicious attacks against our president, His Excellency Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, he will emerge victorious in the September 2025 elections and guide our country towards a prosperous future.”

This incident comes at a time when political tensions are rising ahead of the 2025 general elections. The allegations of identity fraud and manipulation highlight the intense competition between the country’s major political parties.

Observers are likely to question how this incident will influence voter perceptions of both the DPP and the MCP. For the Mutharika family, the situation underscores the challenges of protecting their legacy in a highly polarized political environment.

The DPP has called on all Malawians to remain vigilant and not fall prey to fraudulent individuals or manipulative tactics. Meanwhile, the MCP is yet to respond to these allegations.

The political stage in Malawi is heating up, and incidents like these are a reminder of the high stakes involved as parties jostle for influence and public trust ahead of the polls.

The people of Zomba-Chingale have expressed concern over delays in completing the Lirangwe-Chingale-Machinga Road project.

For starters, on May 31, 2018, former President Arthur Peter Mutharika assured people in the area that commencement of the construction of the road would enhance economic activities for the people of Blantyre, Zomba, and Machinga districts upon its completion but it never materialised.

Thondolo

Mutharika made those promises at Linjidzi Primary School ground in the area of Traditional Authority Lundu in Blantyre during the ground-breaking ceremony of the same 62-kilometre road which was expected to be constructed in three phases with funding from Malawi Government.

The former Malawian leader described the project as a proof of the National Transport Master Plan as outlined in the Malawi Growth and Development Strategy (MGDS 3) aimed at developing the transport sector.

But the stretch of the road still remains in a dilapidated state.

This is what John Thondolo said from Ngowe Village Traditional Authority Mulumbe in Zomba.

“We are asking the government to complete this road project. Pregnant women are delivering along the way, due to this bad road. We are also failing to transport our produce to the market since Zomba, Machinga and Blantyre are bread baskets for the country,” he said.
According to Thondolo, the road is crucial in revitalizing business in the area.

James Biswick, a tomato seller, says his business has been heavily affected because he cannot manage to transport his produce to the designated markets.
“Unfortunately, am heavily affected and am appealing to the government to help us,” he said.

Hawa Malikebo says she recalls her memory when struggled to go to the hospital during her time of pregnancy. “Thanks to the passing by vehicle which helped me to reach the hospital,” she said.

The first phase of the project, which was being constructed by Mota-Engil, started in April 2018 and was supposed to cover about 19 kilometres at a cost of K5.3 billion for a period of 18 months. But was abandoned.

Government Has Understood PAC Concerns

By Wadza Botomani

The Public Affairs Committee (PAC) recently convened with President Lazarus Chakwera to address pressing socio-economic challenges facing Malawi. During the meeting held at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe, PAC’s chief executive committee chairperson, Monsignor Patrick Thawale, expressed serious concerns about the state of the nation’s economy, which he described as being “on the death bed” due to rampant corruption and a noticeable absence of effective leadership.

Monsignor Thawale emphasized the urgent need for the government to adhere to the commitments outlined in the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) manifesto. He called for a more effective public sector and better management practices to revitalize the economy and restore public confidence. The PAC’s mission, which combines religious authority with civic responsibility, underscores the importance of accountability and good governance in addressing the nation’s urgent needs.

Chakwera meeting PAC

Despite the gravity of the issues discussed, PAC officials acknowledged President Chakwera’s resilience in the face of criticism. They commended him for his ongoing development initiatives, particularly the construction of new roads that have significantly improved infrastructure in Lilongwe. Such efforts reflect a commitment to progress, but they also highlight the need for more comprehensive action in other areas.

This meeting marked the second engagement between PAC and President Chakwera since November 2023, when several critical issues were raised in a comprehensive seven-page document. Among these concerns was a call for peaceful and credible elections, emphasizing the necessity for transparency and integrity in the electoral process.

As Malawi navigates these difficult times, the dialogue between the government and organizations like PAC is vital. It reflects a growing recognition of the need for collaborative efforts to tackle corruption and enhance leadership to foster socio-economic stability. The government’s responsiveness to PAC’s concerns could be a significant step toward restoring public trust and ensuring a brighter future for all Malawians.

Five Things PAC Criticized President Chakwera For- off the wall of Dickson Kashoti

By Dickson Kashoti

Veteran Journalist Dickson Kashoti has taken time to analyse some of the issues presented by the Public Affairs Committee when they met President Chakwera at Kamuzu Palace on Monday.

1. Handling of Corruption: PAC expressed disappointment with the inaction and indecisiveness in addressing corruption allegations, especially involving senior government officials.

MY RESPONSE: President Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera has been swift in dealing and handling corruption issues whenever they arise.
President Dr Chakwera acts immediately the Anti-Corruption Bureau effects an arrest on a public officer or is booked for a corruption case.
For example, President Dr Chakwera suspended the powerful and influential Vice President Dr Saulos Chilima when he was indicted on Sattar corruption charges.
President Dr Chakwera also fired the former Inspector General of Police Mr. Kainja.
However, he cannot act on social media gossip.
He only acts when ACB has formally charged a public officer.
Put it simply, President Dr Chakwera’s fight against corruption is on track and the country is winning.

2. Economic Mismanagement: The organization criticized the deteriorating standard of living, with high commodity prices outpacing citizens’ incomes and inadequate fiscal policy management.

MY RESPONSE: This is a global economic trend due to global economic meltdown.
Even developed countries are facing high inflation rates pushup food prices exorbitantly high and leaving most people in abject poverty in developing countries, including Malawi.
This is the reason the government has put in place short, medium and long term economic policies and plans to reverse the situation such as mtukula pakhomo, the NEEF agricultural loans, AIP, Mega Farms etc.
Even if PAC was a political party and was in government, they could have faced a similar situation which has been caused by a number of factors which include natural disasters such as cyclones in the case of Malawi, epidemics and pandemics such as COVID-19 and cholera, the war in Ukraine etc.

3. Excessive International Travel: PAC pointed out that the administration’s frequent international trips created a perception of excessive public expenditure amid economic hardships.

MY RESPONSE: All the foreign trips President Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera undertakes are beneficial to the nation, especially the poor.
His recent trip to United Arab Emirates has brought the latest cargo of fuel when the country was in dire need of the commodity.
After all, not all trips are funded by the government.
The United Arab Emirates trip is an example which was fully sponsored by Abu Dhabi.

4. Civil Service Leadership Gaps: The committee highlighted dysfunction and demotivation within the civil service, citing the long-vacant Principal Secretary Administration position in the Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC).

MY RESPONSE: The position will be filled soon.

5. Governance and Election Preparedness: PAC criticized the suppression of opposition demonstrations and raised concerns about politically motivated arrests, warning that these actions could undermine the credibility of the 2025 elections.

MY RESPONSE: President Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera and the ruling MCP never suppress opposition protests.
Anyone, including the opposition, have a Constitutional right to demonstrate.
However, experience has shown that opposition sponsored demos turn violent and thieves usually take advantage of the chaos to loot shops.
Vendors and shop owners usually gang together to prevent such chaotic occurrences to protect their businesses, this is why they hire panga wielding muscular men.
On the so called politically motivated arrests, the police arrest anyone, regardless of political or religious affiliation, as long as they they are against the law.
We have seen even members of the ruling MCP being arrested.
It is surprising that some people think opposition members are immune from arrests and prosecution, this is wrong.
Any wrong doer will always be arrested and prosecuted in a competent court of law regardless of one’s standing in the society, political and religious affiliation, tribe and where one comes from.
No one is above the law.
