Political Analyst Ceasar Kondowe has backed government decision of honoring late Vice President Saulos Chilima in holding a memorial service at Nthungwa in Nkhata-Bay district on 10th June, 2025.

Kondowe’s sentiments comes at time government has organized a memorial service in honor of the late Vice President Saulos Chilima and eight others who died on a plane clash at Nthungwa in Chikangawa forest, Nkhata-Bay district on 10th June, 2024.

Caesar Kondowe

In a press statement, Kondowe said the President decision is welcomed considering that this is a national issue not an individual or a political party issue.

“Vice President Dr. Saulos Klaus Chilima was not an ordinary person because he was almost a second citizen, therefore government has a prerogative to make such decision,” reads part of the statement.

He also mentioned that it is quiet important to hold such a memorial considering that this is not only for the Vice President but it will also include those other people who died on the very same spot with the Vice President as government has come clear at a point where several stakeholders, individuals were saying the President has not visited the site.

Kondowe also highlighted that this is the time President wanted to visit the site as there will be a special function which is a memorial service.

“So I feel like people that are against this idea is quite problematic, because the President is doing as a citizen, the first citizen of this country to accord our fallen hero a very Memorial function,” the statement adds.

He further said the President’s attendance is a welcomed idea and is part of people that had been calling for this function.

Kondowe concluded by critising political parties who are politicising the Chilima legacy and talking against government saying this is not acceptable and should really be condemned.

Another Governance and economic expert Dr Ben Dzolowere says the ceremony which Government intend to hold at Nthungwa will mark as a symbol of love towards friends who lost their lives in that place.

Dr Dzolowere said the problem in Malawi is that people only knows to oppose without giving alternative views.

Khaby Lame’s unexpected detainment: a lesson in immigration compliance

By Rahim Abdul

In a surprising turn of events, Khaby Lame, the world’s most-followed TikToker with over 162 million followers, found himself in a dramatic encounter with US immigration authorities.

On June 6, 2025, Lame was detained by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) at Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas, Nevada, for allegedly overstaying his visa, which he had entered on April 30, 2025.

The news of his detention was initially shared by Bo Loudon, a political activist and friend of Donald Trump’s son Barron, who claimed Lame was an “illegal alien” and shared a screenshot purportedly from the ICE detainee locator website.

However, ICE later confirmed that Lame was detained for immigration violations but was granted “voluntary departure” instead of facing formal deportation proceedings.

This decision allowed Lame to leave the country without further legal consequences, and he subsequently departed the US.

As the holder of dual citizenship in Senegal and Italy, Lame’s situation highlights the importance of understanding and complying with immigration regulations.

The President of the United Transformation Movement (UTM), Dr. Dalitso Kabambe, has commenced an important political gathering with a solemn ceremony in memory of five individuals who tragically died in a plane crash on June 10 of the previous year. Among the deceased was the party’s former leader and Vice President of Malawi, Dr. Saulos Klaus Chilima.

The memorial event marked the beginning of a major UTM meeting taking place at the Dinde Primary School ground in the southern region of Zambwe, within Nsanje District.

Kabambe in Nsanje

Dr. Kabambe is expected to use the occasion to outline and articulate the party’s key development strategies ahead of the forthcoming general elections.

As the gathering continues, Dr. Kabambe has already begun welcoming individuals who will represent the UTM party in the upcoming elections either as parliamentary candidates or ward councillors for various constituencies and wards across Nsanje District.

This event, therefore, serves a dual purpose—honoring the lives lost in a national tragedy and charting a new course for the party’s future through a strong grassroots mobilization and policy articulation.

The gathering underscores UTM’s ongoing efforts to remain politically relevant and reorganized under new leadership following the loss of its charismatic founder, Dr. Chilima.

Observers say this occasion could set the tone for how the party positions itself in the shifting political landscape of Malawi as it rebuilds and redefines its vision under Dr. Kabambe’s leadership.

The Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) has issued a seven-day ultimatum to Kamlepo Kalua, demanding that he produces evidence to support his claim that the party received 5 billion kwacha from the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) to form an alliance.

According to a letter signed by party spokesperson Annie Amatullah Maluwa, Kalua must provide concrete proof of the alleged transaction.

The party’s move comes after Kalua’s claims sparked widespread speculation about AFORD’s potential alliance with the ruling MCP.

AFORD has maintained that it has no intention of forming a coalition with the MCP, and the party’s leadership is determined to clarify the matter.

In the letter, AFORD emphasizes that Kalua’s allegations are serious and require substantiation. The party is adamant that it will not let such claims go unchallenged and will take further action against Kalua if he fails to produce the required evidence.

The seven-day deadline given to Kalua underscores the party’s resolve to get to the bottom of the matter.

AFORD’s leadership is keen to protect the party’s reputation and ensure that its members and the public are not misled by unsubstantiated claims.

However, AFORD’s stance remains clear: the party will not engage in any coalition with the MCP.

If Kalua fails to produce the required evidence, AFORD has warned that it will take further action against him.
