By Burnett Munthali

The President of the United Transformation Movement (UTM), Dr. Dalitso Kabambe, has commenced an important political gathering with a solemn ceremony in memory of five individuals who tragically died in a plane crash on June 10 of the previous year. Among the deceased was the party’s former leader and Vice President of Malawi, Dr. Saulos Klaus Chilima.

The memorial event marked the beginning of a major UTM meeting taking place at the Dinde Primary School ground in the southern region of Zambwe, within Nsanje District.

Dr. Kabambe is expected to use the occasion to outline and articulate the party’s key development strategies ahead of the forthcoming general elections.

As the gathering continues, Dr. Kabambe has already begun welcoming individuals who will represent the UTM party in the upcoming elections either as parliamentary candidates or ward councillors for various constituencies and wards across Nsanje District.

This event, therefore, serves a dual purpose—honoring the lives lost in a national tragedy and charting a new course for the party’s future through a strong grassroots mobilization and policy articulation.

The gathering underscores UTM’s ongoing efforts to remain politically relevant and reorganized under new leadership following the loss of its charismatic founder, Dr. Chilima.

Observers say this occasion could set the tone for how the party positions itself in the shifting political landscape of Malawi as it rebuilds and redefines its vision under Dr. Kabambe’s leadership.

The Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) has issued a seven-day ultimatum to Kamlepo Kalua, demanding that he produces evidence to support his claim that the party received 5 billion kwacha from the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) to form an alliance.

According to a letter signed by party spokesperson Annie Amatullah Maluwa, Kalua must provide concrete proof of the alleged transaction.

The party’s move comes after Kalua’s claims sparked widespread speculation about AFORD’s potential alliance with the ruling MCP.

AFORD has maintained that it has no intention of forming a coalition with the MCP, and the party’s leadership is determined to clarify the matter.

In the letter, AFORD emphasizes that Kalua’s allegations are serious and require substantiation. The party is adamant that it will not let such claims go unchallenged and will take further action against Kalua if he fails to produce the required evidence.

The seven-day deadline given to Kalua underscores the party’s resolve to get to the bottom of the matter.

AFORD’s leadership is keen to protect the party’s reputation and ensure that its members and the public are not misled by unsubstantiated claims.

However, AFORD’s stance remains clear: the party will not engage in any coalition with the MCP.

If Kalua fails to produce the required evidence, AFORD has warned that it will take further action against him.

The Malawi National Football Team, affectionately known as the Flames, has been held to a goalless draw by Namibia in their second match of the 2025 Hollywoodbets COSAFA Cup.

This result leaves the team rooted at the bottom of Group B with just one point from two games.

The match, played at the Dr. Petrus Molemela Stadium in Bloemfontein, South Africa, was a tightly contested affair, with both teams creating few scoring opportunities.

Despite dominating possession, the Flames were unable to find a way past the Namibia defense, while the Brave Warriors’ solid defending and occasional counter-attacks kept the Malawian goalkeeper George Chikooka on high alert.

*Current Group B Standings:*

– *Angola*: 4 points (group leaders)
– *Lesotho*: 3 points
– *Namibia*: 2 points
– *Malawi*: 1 point

To keep their hopes of advancing alive, the Flames must now defeat group leaders Angola in their final match on Tuesday and hope that the encounter between Namibia and Lesotho on the same day ends in a draw.

Given the competitive nature of the tournament, this will be a tall order for the Malawian team.

“We need to get into the box and score goals,” said Flames assistant coach Peter Mponda after the match, highlighting the team’s struggles in front of goal.

Despite the setback, Mponda remains optimistic about the team’s chances, emphasizing that they have worked on their shortfalls and are determined to secure a positive result against Angola.

*Upcoming Fixtures:*

– *Namibia vs Lesotho*: June 10
– *Angola vs Malawi*: June 10

The Flames’ final match against Angola will be a crucial one, with the team needing a win to keep their semifinal dreams alive.

Malawi football fans will be hoping that their team can rise to the occasion and deliver a performance that keeps their COSAFA Cup aspirations burning.

The government is set to re-target 40,000 beneficiaries under the Social Cash Transfer Programme (SCTP) in Lilongwe by mid-June. According to Principal Social Welfare Officer for Lilongwe District Council, Sarah Chimodzi, the programme has had a transformative impact on the lives of beneficiaries.

The SCTP has been instrumental in uplifting vulnerable and ultra-poor households, providing them with financial support to meet their basic needs.

One beneficiary, Chifundo Fanizo from Mpingu Village, Group Village Headman Chilinza, Traditional Authority Malili, shared his success story.

He started benefiting from the programme in 2018 and used the funds to venture into farming.

Today, his garden generates K140,000 every week from vegetable sales.

Village Headman Mpingu praised the initiative, saying it has brought hope and transformation to people in his village.

“The SCTP has made a significant difference in the lives of our people, especially the most vulnerable,” he said.

The re-targeting exercise aims to ensure that the programme reaches those who need it most.

Chimodzi noted that the programme’s impact is evident in the testimonies from beneficiaries, who have been able to improve their livelihoods and become self-sufficient.

The SCTP is a vital component of the government’s efforts to reduce poverty and vulnerability in Malawi.

By providing financial support to vulnerable households, the programme is helping to improve food security, health, and education outcomes.
