Utilizing youths for economic development

A Call to Action
The recent scene of youths flocking to stadiums in search of jobs is a stark reminder of the pressing issue of youth unemployment in Malawi.

It’s imperative that the government acknowledges this pandemic and takes immediate action to address it.

According to Concerned Citizen executive member Edward Kambanje, the current state of affairs is a direct result of the government’s failure to provide a clear framework for uplifting the lives of the majority youth population.

Edward Kambanje

Kambanje emphasizes that it’s high time we need to balance investments in education with creating industries, as the current approach is unsustainable and contributes to the rising numbers of unemployed youths.

There is an urgent need to strike a balance between investing in education and creating industries that can absorb the growing number of graduates.

The current approach, which prioritizes building schools over establishing industries, is unsustainable and contributes to the rising numbers of unemployed youths.

Instead of producing educated individuals with hope and opportunities, we are creating a generation of frustrated and disillusioned youths who are forced into undesirable situations.

A clear and comprehensive youth program is necessary to harness the abundant human resources and channel them into productive endeavors.

It’s unacceptable to have a Ministry of Youth with a budget that predominantly focuses on sports, neglecting economic empowerment. The current approach is not only inadequate but also misguided.

If this challenge is not addressed promptly, we risk losing an entire generation to lawlessness and hopelessness. It’s time for a mindset shift – instead of solely relying on employment opportunities, we need to focus on developing skills and enterprises that can create jobs and reduce the unemployment rate.

The call to action is clear: we must work together to create opportunities that will harness the energy and creativity of Malawi’s youth, driving economic growth and development for the benefit of all.

Let’s utilize the youths for economic development and create a better future for Malawi.

MCP district chairpersons in the North South Region are demanding fresh primary elections in Mzimba Central, citing serious irregularities in the May 11 polls.

Team leader Manase Chiumia alleges that a parallel NEC, violation of party procedures, and interference by regional officials compromised the process.

The disputed race was between Minister Vitumbiko Mumba and Adamson Kuseri Mkandawire.

The primary elections were marred by controversy, with allegations of unfair practices and bias towards one of the candidates. The chairpersons argue that the irregularities affected the outcome of the elections.A recent court ruling cleared the way for Mkandawire to represent MCP in the September 16 polls.

However, Mumba’s lawyers claim they were not heard before the injunction was vacated, adding complexity to the situation. This development has sparked tension within the party.

The MCP district chairpersons are calling for a fresh start, ensuring that the primary elections are conducted fairly and transparently.

They believe that this will help to restore confidence in the party’s electoral process and ensure that the best candidate represents MCP in the upcoming polls.

The party’s internal conflicts have raised concerns about its unity and preparedness for the September polls.

The demand for fresh primaries highlights the need for MCP to address its internal issues and ensure a smooth electoral process.

The outcome of this dispute will have significant implications for MCP’s chances in the September 16 polls. A united and organized party will be better equipped to compete against its rivals, while internal conflicts could undermine its prospects.

The situation is being closely watched by party loyalists and political analysts, who are eager to see how MCP will resolve its internal disputes.

The Deputy Director of the Social Cash Transfer Program (SCTP) in the Ministry of Gender, Community Development, and Social Welfare, Laurent Kansinjiro, has stated that the government and its partners are working to address challenges affecting the E-Payment system for SCTP beneficiaries.

Some of the challenges identified include sim card losses, forgotten PIN codes, and reports of agents overcharging cash-out fees, particularly targeting elderly beneficiaries with low literacy levels.

To mitigate these issues, the ministry and partners are sensitizing beneficiaries on sim card care and replacement procedures.

Kansinjiro added that service providers are blacklisting agents who exploit beneficiaries, and local councils are linking beneficiaries to national registration offices for ID processing.

According to Principal Social Welfare Officer in Mulanje, Mavuto Yapoma, the E-Payment system achieved a 60% success rate in its initial cycle.

Yapoma also noted that some SCTP beneficiaries in Mulanje have experienced improved economic status, with around 17,000 beneficiaries moving from low-income to middle-income status.

The government continues to work on enhancing the E-Payment system to better serve its beneficiaries.
