By Linda Kwanjana

Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Benedicto Chambo, has pledged to support farmers in Lingoni and Domasi irrigation schemes in Machinga district through the National Economic Empowerment Fund (NEEF) an initiative that he said aims to enhance food security and economic empowerment among farmers in the area.

Chambo made this commitment during a recent tour of the two schemes, emphasizing the importance of farmers working hard to maximize the benefits of the schemes.

“We are committed to supporting farmers in these schemes by providing subsidized loans through NEEF. By next week, we will have disbursed the loans to provide farm inputs, which will go a long way in boosting productivity and food security,” Chambo said.

Chambo also stressed the need for farmers to prioritize environmental conservation, noting that river siltation due to neglect is affecting water flow from the hills and he urged farmers to work together to protect their environment and ensure sustainable use of natural resources.

The initiative has been welcomed by Mary Londola, Chairperson for Lingoni Irrigation Scheme, who said it will motivate farmers to work harder and improve their livelihoods.

Senior Chief Chamba also echoed this sentiment, urging people in the area to collaborate in caring for vegetation and avoiding charcoal burning.

The Domasi irrigation scheme, launched by Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda in 1972, covers approximately 500 hectares of land and has 3,042 participants whileLingoni scheme, with around 200 hectares, has 1,023 participants.

The Minority Shareholders Association of Listed Companies (MISALICO) has called on religious leaders in Malawi to encourage their congregations to participate in capital market investments, including buying shares. This appeal was made by MISALICO Secretary General, Frank Harawa, during a shareholder literacy training session held in Blantyre.

The training, organized in partnership with the Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM), aimed to equip religious leaders with knowledge on investing in shares through the stock market.

According to Harawa, participating in the capital market can enable Malawians to attain financial independence and contribute to the country’s economic empowerment and development.

The initiative seeks to dispel the misconception that the capital market is only for high-net-worth individuals, which has limited participation to just one percent of the population.

Khumbo Ntalika, Director of the Capital Market and Microfinance Supervision Department at RBM, echoed Harawa’s sentiments, emphasizing the need to increase public awareness about purchasing shares in listed companies.

This, she said, would enhance investments in the stock market and ultimately boost economic growth.

By engaging faith leaders, MISALICO aims to reach a broader audience and promote financial literacy among Malawians.

The association believes that this initiative will not only benefit individuals but also contribute to the country’s overall economic development.

Zomba City Council Mayor Christopher Jana has accused politicians, influential individuals, and some forestry officials of exacerbating deforestation in Zomba Mountain Forest.

Speaking at a fun walk and hike event organized by the Public Relations Society of Malawi (PRSM) in partnership with Friends of Mulunguzi Dam and Southern Region Water Board, Jana emphasized that timber businesses, often backed by wealthy individuals colluding with politicians and forestry officials, are primarily responsible for the damage.

While acknowledging villagers’ role in the deforestation, Jana stressed that the destruction is largely driven by those with financial interests and connections to power.

The event aimed to raise awareness about conservation and protect the forest from further degradation.

PRSM President Benson Linje welcomed the community’s enthusiasm, encouraging participants to continue supporting conservation efforts throughout the year.

Malawi Gaming and Lotteries Authority (MAGLA) Director General Rachel Mijiga, whose organization supported the initiative, pledged to do more next year.

The government’s efforts to address the issue include deploying Malawi Defence Force (MDF) soldiers to patrol the forest and revoke concession licenses for stakeholders contributing to the destruction.

The link between deforestation and its impact on the environment and water supply is a concern, and community members and organizations are urged to collaborate in protecting Zomba Mountain Forest.

By working together, they can mitigate the effects of deforestation and promote sustainable environmental management.
