Ministry of Homeland Security registers 3,976 Mozambican Refugees amid political unrest

The Ministry of Homeland Security has reported that 3,976 individuals from Mozambique have sought refuge in Malawi following political unrest in their home country. This was disclosed during a visit to the Nyamithuthu Refugee Camp in Traditional Authority Tengani, Nsanje, by a high-level delegation comprising representatives from the British High Commission to Malawi, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), USAID, and Malawi’s Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA), among others.

Initially, the refugees were temporarily sheltered in local schools, a move that significantly disrupted learning activities in the area. To address this, authorities have begun relocating the asylum seekers to Nyamithuthu Refugee Camp, which has been designated as a more sustainable and structured environment for their accommodation.

Speaking during the visit, Hilda Katema, Senior Administrative and Operations Manager for the Department of Refugees in the Ministry of Homeland Security, emphasized the need for accurate reporting and caution in speculating the numbers of asylum seekers. She warned that inflated or inaccurate figures could hinder effective response planning and resource allocation.

“The numbers we report are critical for planning purposes, ensuring that resources are effectively mobilized to meet the needs of those seeking asylum,” Katema stated.

The delegation’s visit aimed to assess the current situation at the camp and explore ways to provide support to the displaced individuals. Stakeholders, including international organizations and government agencies, expressed their commitment to addressing the challenges faced by the asylum seekers, particularly regarding shelter, food, and access to basic services.

The influx of Mozambican refugees highlights the broader regional impact of political instability in Mozambique and underscores the need for coordinated efforts to address the root causes of displacement. Malawi, as a host country, continues to uphold its commitment to international humanitarian principles, despite facing its own economic and resource constraints.

Efforts are ongoing to ensure that the relocation process is smooth and that the refugees are provided with the necessary support to rebuild their lives while awaiting resolution of the political crisis in Mozambique.

Warrant of Arrest Issued for DPP Vice President  Alfred Gangata Amidst Allegations of Falsifying Records

The Lilongwe Resident Magistrate Court has issued a warrant of arrest for Alfred Gangata, DPP’s vice president for the centre on charges of falsifying records and forgery. The allegations stem from Gangata’s alleged preparation of a false tax clearance certificate between 2017 and 2018 to meet the bidding process requirements advertised by the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR).

According to the court documents, Gangata is accused of contravening Section 112(4) of the Taxation Act and Section 336 of the Penal Code. The warrant of arrest comes amidst reports that the ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP) is attempting to silence the opposition by arresting its members on trivial charges.

Gangata

Gangata has been actively conducting political rallies in the central region of Malawi, particularly in Lilongwe, where he has been drawing large crowds. This has reportedly threatened the MCP’s grip on power, prompting the ruling party to employ intimidation tactics against the opposition.

The DPP has expressed concerns that the arrest warrant is a politically motivated move aimed at stifling the opposition’s momentum. Reports indicate that the police, allegedly under the MCP’s influence, have planned to arrest senior DPP members in a bid to weaken the party’s structures.

The development has sparked widespread condemnation from human rights activists and opposition parties, who view the arrest warrant as a blatant attempt to muzzle the opposition. The DPP has vowed to continue its political activities, despite the intimidation tactics employed by the ruling party.

Gangata’s case has raised questions about the independence of the judiciary and the police’s impartiality in handling cases involving opposition figures. As the country gears up for the 2025 general elections, the opposition has expressed concerns about the ruling party’s intentions to use state institutions to suppress dissenting voices.

The DPP has called upon the international community to take note of the developments and to exert pressure on the Malawi government to respect human rights and the rule of law. The party has also urged its supporters to remain calm and to continue participating in peaceful political activities.

As the drama unfolds, Malawians are watching with bated breath to see how the situation will play out. One thing is certain, however: the arrest warrant issued for Alfred Gangata has set the stage for a tense and potentially explosive political showdown in the lead-up to the 2025 elections.

ESCOM Moves to Enhance Reliability of Chikwawa-Nsanje Power Line

The Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) has announced plans to install steel structures on some points on its Chikwawa-Nsanje power line to enhance reliability. The move comes amid concerns that the line usually goes off when it rains, causing power outages that paralyze businesses and essential services.

According to ESCOM spokesperson, Peter Kanjere, the power line has been experiencing frequent outages due to damage caused by stormy rains in the Shire Valley. Kanjere disclosed that over 20 poles had fallen down, while others were leaning badly, resulting in the power supply outage experienced in Nsanje on Wednesday afternoon.

The power outage, which was restored on Thursday night, had a significant impact on small-scale businesses and office work in the area. Nsanje Civil Society Organizations (CSO) Network Chairperson, Mike Dansa, has been critical of ESCOM over the frequent power outages, claiming that they are negatively impacting the local economy.

While ESCOM has faced criticism over its handling of power outages, the corporation has maintained that it is working to address the challenges facing the power grid. The planned installation of steel structures on the Chikwawa-Nsanje power line is a step in the right direction, as it is expected to enhance the reliability of the power supply.

The frequent power outages in Nsanje have highlighted the need for ESCOM to invest in upgrading its infrastructure. The corporation has faced challenges in maintaining its power grid, particularly in areas prone to natural disasters such as floods and storms.

As ESCOM works to address the challenges facing its power grid, it is essential that the corporation engages with stakeholders, including local communities and businesses, to ensure that their needs are taken into account. The planned installation of steel structures on the Chikwawa-Nsanje power line is a positive development, but it is only the beginning of a long process to upgrade ESCOM’s infrastructure.

The move by ESCOM to enhance the reliability of the Chikwawa-Nsanje power line is a welcome development. However, it is essential that the corporation continues to work to address the challenges facing its power grid, including investing in upgrading its infrastructure and engaging with stakeholders to ensure that their needs are taken into account.
