Kunkuyu wants black box issue prioritised in Chilima plane crash investigation

Former Minister of Information Moses Kunkuyu has called on the parliamentary inquiry into the tragic Malawi Defence Force (MDF) Dornier plane crash that killed Vice President Saulos Chilima and eight others in June, 2024, to prioritise investigations surrounding the aircraft’s black box, arguing that the matter is central to establishing the truth behind the disaster.

In an interview with 247 Malawi News, Kunkuyu said the ongoing parliamentary investigation presents an important opportunity for Malawians to obtain answers and closure following the fatal crash that claimed several lives.

“The ongoing parliamentary investigation into the tragic MDF Dornier plane crash is an important national exercise. It is my sincere hope, and that of many Malawians, that this process will provide the necessary answers people seek and ultimately help bring closure to the families, friends, and the nation at large,” he said.

Kunkuyu explained that in aviation disasters across the world, investigators usually prioritise locating the Flight Data Recorder (FDR) and Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR), commonly referred to as the black boxes because they contain crucial information needed to determine the cause of a crash.

According to him, CVR captures radio transmissions and sounds from the cockpit, while the FDR stores important technical data such as speed, altitude, engine performance, and other operational details.

“These are the tools that help unlock the puzzle surrounding any air crash investigation,” he said.

The former minister argued that if allegations or information exist suggesting that someone may know the whereabouts of the black box, investigators should treat such leads with urgency.

“If people of perceived good standing in society, including Cabinet ministers, Members of Parliament(MPs), and some civil society leaders  believe that someone may possess information relating to the black box from the crashed MDF Dornier aircraft, then the committee would be careless to ignore such a lead,” said Kunkuyu.

He specifically urged the parliamentary committee, chaired by Walter Nyamilandu, to make the issue of the black box the starting point of the inquiry.

“The first step of this investigation must surely be to establish the position of any black box associated with this aircraft. Any sentiments or allegations surrounding it deserve serious consideration because they shape the direction and credibility of the entire investigation,” he said.

Kunkuyu questioned why discussions surrounding the black box would be postponed until later stages of the inquiry, insisting that everyone believed to have information on the matter should be invited to testify immediately.

He also referenced allegations that he himself may have made remarks related to the black box and challenged the committee to summon him first.

“I believe Malawians would want to hear questions directed at former Minister of Information Moses Kunkuyu, who is alleged to have said something related to the black box. Honourable members of the inquiry, Moses Kunkuyu is hereby requesting that the first person to be interviewed should be Moses Kunkuyu,” he said.

Kunkuyu concluded by describing the inquiry as a potential moment of truth for the country.

Earlier inquiries, including a technical assessment by German aircraft manufacturers and a government-appointed commission of inquiry, largely attributed the crash to adverse weather and operational factors, pointing to no foul play.

However, the findings failed to extinguish public scepticism, with lingering questions over information management, decision-making and other circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

The persistence of those doubts ultimately triggered renewed calls for another inquiry, piling pressure on parliament to demonstrate transparency, independence and professionalism.

President Peter Mutharika ordered the fresh probe in February after Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs Charles Mhango cited gaps in three previous inquiries and recommended a new investigation.

Speaker of the parliament Sameer Suleman announced a 13-member committee tasked to interrogate previous findings, close gaps and deliver closure and report back within 90 days.

Cricket Malawi (CM) and the Malawi Schools Sports Association (MASSA) on Tuesday signed a three-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at expanding and strengthening cricket development programmes for both boys and girls in schools across the country.

The agreement, signed in Blantyre, is expected to enhance talent identification, improve youth development structures, and better integrate cricket into school-level competitions and national youth tournaments.

Speaking during the agreement signing ceremony, CM President Vivek Ganesan said the partnership will help establish clear development pathways from school cricket to national age-group teams, while also promoting the sport within Malawi’s education system.

He added that cricket will be used as a tool not only for sporting excellence but also for education support, school retention, and the development of life skills such as discipline, teamwork, and leadership.

He further emphasized the importance of safeguarding children and maintaining fair play standards in all programmes.

On his part, MASSA President Blackson Malamula said the collaboration is crucial in addressing challenges such as age-cheating in school sports, noting that the partnership will strengthen joint monitoring and verification processes in cricket competitions.

He also said the MoU will help identify schools and regional zones with strong potential for cricket development, ensuring structured growth of the sport at grassroots level.

In her remarks Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS) sports and recreation administrator Bertha Liphava welcomed the partnership but urged both institutions to focus on effective implementation.

She said while the agreement is a positive step, its success will depend on how well the programmes are executed on the ground to benefit learners and schools across the country.

HESLGB includes ODeL students in loan scheme expansion

The Higher Education Students’ Loans and Grants Board (HESLGB) has widened its loans and grants programme to reach more students in tertiary institutions, including those enrolled under Open, Distance and e-Learning (ODeL) systems.

Speaking during a press briefing on Tuesday, the Board’s spokesperson Mercy Chijere said the number of beneficiaries has been increased from 34,000 to 38,000, with K42 billion earmarked for disbursement in the current cycle.

Chijere said the decision to include ODeL students was informed by growing evidence that many learners in the category continue to face financial barriers in accessing higher education.

She also raised concern over the low repayment rate among some graduates after completing their studies, saying this was affecting the sustainability of the fund.

To address the challenge, she said the Board is working with employers to ensure that loan repayments are deducted directly from the salaries of employed beneficiaries on a monthly basis.

The application period for the loans and grants programme runs from May 25 to June 24, 2026.

HELSGB  is a government institution responsible for providing financial assistance to students pursuing higher education.

It was created to help improve access to universities and colleges by offering loans, and in some cases grants, to students who are unable to meet the cost of tuition and related expenses.

The board operates under the Ministry of Education and focuses mainly on students enrolled in public universities and other accredited tertiary institutions in the country.

Its work also includes recovering loans from graduates after they complete their studies, ensuring that the funds can be reused to support other students in future intakes.

Overall, the loans board plays an important role in expanding access to higher education in the country, particularly for students from less privileged backgrounds.

She said the newly released book focuses on encouraging ordinary people to believe in themselves and pursue opportunities with confidence.

According to Mdala, the book delivers a strong message that life-changing opportunities are attainable for anyone willing to apply boldly and remain confident in their abilities.

“The book aims to guide and encourage students and young professionals applying for universities, scholarships, and other transformative opportunities,” she explained.

Mdala said the inspiration behind the book came from her personal experiences of applying for academic and professional opportunities in different countries across the world.

She noted that many talented young people often miss valuable opportunities because they lack guidance or confidence.

“Through these experiences, I realised that many talented young people miss life-changing opportunities simply because they do not know where to start, how to apply, or they doubt themselves,” she said.

The author said the new book was officially launched early this year and is currently available online through platforms such as Amazon, Apple Books, Barnes & Noble, and other online bookstores.

She said in Malawi, the book can also be accessed through Mabuku Online, a local digital library platform.

Commenting on Malawi’s writing industry, Mdala said she believes the sector is growing and holds great promise.

She praised Mabuku Online for creating a platform that connects local writers with readers and provides authors with an opportunity to showcase their work.

“I was genuinely impressed by the number of Malawian authors writing in very diverse and interesting areas,” she said.

Mdala revealed that she started writing seriously in recent years, drawing inspiration from her personal experiences and reflections.

She said so far, she has published two books namely ‘5 Steps to Ace Your University and Scholarship Applications’ and ‘A True Mirror: Reflections on Personal Growth.’

Mdala encouraged young people in the country, especially girls, to believe in their dreams and embrace opportunities fearlessly.

“Sometimes one application, one opportunity, or one act of courage can completely change the direction of a person’s life,” she said.

She added that she hopes to continue using writing, mentorship, and education as tools to inspire and empower others.

Over the years, Mdala has been awarded five scholarships and participated in academic and leadership programmes in countries including South Africa, Austria, the United States, Sweden, Bangladesh, and the United Kingdom.

She is also a Fulbright Scholar and has participated in programmes such as the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI), the African Union Young Women Mentorship Programme, and intellectual property training programmes in Sweden and Bangladesh.

Additionally, she served as an International Student Ambassador for the United Kingdom Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA).
