Desmond Maringwa, a board member of Fifpro Africa, is expected to arrive in Malawi for a supervisory visit to the Football Player Association (FPA).

The visit aims to assess the FPA’s eligibility for Fifpro membership, following the association’s application.

FPA General Secretary Ernest Mangani stated that Maringwa’s visit will evaluate the FPA’s establishment and provide guidance on additional requirements for Fifpro membership.

During his visit, Maringwa will meet with the FPA executive committee and pay courtesy calls to key football stakeholders, including Football Association of Malawi (FAM) President Fleetwood Haiya and Super League of Malawi (Sulom) President Gilbert Mittawa.

The FPA will also present Maringwa to the Football Legends Association (FLA) board members.

This visit is a crucial step in the FPA’s bid to become a recognized member of Fifpro, which could have significant implications for the rights and welfare of football players in Malawi.

National Assembly Speaker who is also MCP Vice President Catherine Gotani Hara has described President Lazarus Chakwera as one of Malawi’s most caring leaders, noting that his administration has addressed both long-term development and immediate humanitarian needs. Speaking at the MCP 2025 northern region campaign launch on Tuesday, Hara, who is also MCP First Vice President, commended Chakwera for prioritizing relief efforts during crises such as COVID-19, Cyclone Freddy, and climate-related disasters.

“While he had every right to focus on visible infrastructure projects, President Chakwera, like a true father, also responded to urgent challenges facing Malawians. It would have been heartless to ignore those left vulnerable by disasters, which is why he shifted priorities to provide relief while still delivering tangible development,” Hara said.

Local Government Minister Richard Chimwendo Banda also praised Chakwera for ensuring inclusive representation, particularly by appointing leaders from the northern region into his cabinet. “This demonstrates that he is a president for all Malawians,” Chimwendo Banda stated.

President Lazarus Chakwera has reaffirmed his commitment to creating large-scale markets for Malawians in the food production sector to ensure nationwide food accessibility. Speaking at the MCP 2025 campaign launch in Mzimba on Tuesday, Chakwera emphasized that expanding food reserve facilities and increasing farmer loans will boost production, making food more readily available.

“As a country, we need to produce our own food to eliminate hunger. Additionally, this will create jobs in food production and processing, helping Malawians improve their livelihoods,” he said.

Acknowledging current economic struggles, Chakwera announced plans for a Sovereign Welfare Fund to secure future income for newborns. Under this initiative, each child will receive K500,000 at birth, accessible at age 18 as startup capital.

“While we are expanding youth loans and job opportunities, more must be done given our large youth population. Through exports, mining, and other revenues, this fund will ensure future generations have financial independence from the start,” he explained.

Chakwera also pledged to appoint at least four ministers under 35 in his next cabinet, stressing the importance of investing in future leaders. “If we want a better Malawi, we must not fear investing in the next generation,” he said.

Malawi Congress Party (MCP) campaign director Moses Kunkuyu has stated that people in the Northern Region have every reason to follow President Lazarus Chakwera’s leadership, pointing to visible development projects as clear evidence of progress.

Speaking at the Mzimba Stadium during President Chakwera’s rally today, Kunkuyu emphasized that Northern Region residents should remember past injustices inflicted upon them by previous political leaders. He cited the controversial quota system in university selection and the killing of 20 youths on July 20, 2011, as examples of past wrongs that should never be repeated.
