Paramount Chief M’mbelwa V has called on President Lazarus Chakwera to ensure the Malawi Congress Party’s manifesto reaches all corners of the country as Malawi prepares for the September 16th General Elections.

The traditional leader made these remarks on Tuesday at M’mbelwa Stadium in Mzimba during the launch of the MCP’s northern region campaign, where he welcomed the President to the area. Chief M’mbelwa described the event as an opportunity for the President to showcase his administration’s achievements and outline future plans.

“We appreciate the visible development projects implemented by your government, including this stadium. As northern region traditional leaders, we feel honored to host this campaign launch in Mzimba,” said the paramount chief.

The leader also used the platform to advise political parties against violence during the campaign period, emphasizing that rallies should focus on policy issues rather than personal attacks.

“I know our northern communities value peace. I encourage them to maintain the political tolerance they’ve demonstrated in the past, ensuring continued unity across the nation,” M’mbelwa added.

The campaign launch marks the ruling party’s official start of election activities in the northern region, with President Chakwera expected to outline his party’s vision for another term in office.

Joseph Chavula, the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) regional chairperson for the Northern Region, has assured President Lazarus Chakwera that voters in the area will overwhelmingly support him in the next elections due to the various development projects implemented under his leadership.

Chavula made these remarks during MCP Campaign launch led by President Chakwera at the Mzimba Stadium. He highlighted several key projects, including the newly operational Chitipa Stadium, the provision of clean water in Karonga, and other development initiatives across the region, including the Mzimba Stadium where the rally was held.

However, the MCP regional leader also called for unity among Northern Region residents, urging them to work together to ensure the party secures a strong victory in the area. He emphasized the need for collective efforts to strengthen the party’s grassroots mobilization.

The rally served as an opportunity for the ruling party to showcase its development record while rallying support ahead of future elections. President Chakwera’s administration has prioritized infrastructure and social services in the Northern Region as part of its broader national development agenda.

The Minister of Higher Education, Hon. Dr. Jessie Kabwila, delivered a keynote address at the African EdTech 2030 Vision and Plan Forum in Nairobi, Kenya, urging African nations to take control of their digital education future. The event was hosted by the Centre for Mathematics, Science, and Technology Education in Africa (CEMASTEA).

Dr. Kabwila praised the African Union Development Agency (AUDA) and the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) for launching the African EdTech 2030 Vision, Plan, and Policy Framework. She described the initiative as a crucial step toward transforming education across the continent.

She stressed that Africa should not rely on external forces but must lead its own digital transformation. “We are young, energetic, and ready to redefine Africa’s greatness through technology and innovation,” she said.

Dr. Kabwila emphasized the need for EdTech solutions tailored to African contexts, including local languages, cultural values, and the practical challenges faced by students and teachers. She shared Malawi’s progress in leveraging digital tools to improve education, such as students using offline tablet-based science labs (MiLab), solar-powered devices, and teachers receiving training via WhatsApp and e-learning platforms. Rural learners, she noted, are also benefiting from radio and mobile phone-based lessons.

Referencing President Lazarus Chakwera’s vision of a “Malawi in the Cloud,” she highlighted the potential of digital learning to provide equitable opportunities for all African children, even in remote areas. She also mentioned Malawi’s recent decision to join the Digital Public Goods Alliance, which promotes open and inclusive digital infrastructure.

Calling for long-term investment, Dr. Kabwila urged international partners, donors, and the private sector to support scalable, locally-driven innovations rather than short-term projects. “We are not competitors; we are partners,” she said.

As Chair of the African Union’s Education, Science, and Technology Committee, she reaffirmed Malawi’s commitment to aligning with continental education goals. She encouraged African countries to embrace EdTech, stating that digital education could help modernize outdated systems and prepare youth for the global digital economy.

President Lazarus Chakwera and First Lady Monica Chakwera have arrived at M’mbelwa Stadium in Mzimba district, where thousands of supporters have gathered for the Malawi Congress Party’s (MCP) campaign launch. The 25,000-capacity venue is packed as the ruling party takes its manifesto to the Northern Region, following last week’s national launch in Lilongwe.

Chakwera was welcomed by senior government and party officials, including MCP Vice President Catherine Gotani Hara and Inkosi ya Makhosi M’mbelwa V. The event highlights the party’s push to consolidate support in the north, a key battleground ahead of next year’s elections.

The rally is expected to focus on the MCP’s development agenda, with tailored promises on agriculture, infrastructure, education, and job creation for the region. Gotani Hara’s presence underscores the party’s emphasis on northern representation, as she is both the Speaker of Parliament and a prominent northern leader.

The choice of Mzimba, a growing economic hub, signals the MCP’s commitment to decentralizing development. Party supporters, clad in vibrant regalia, have turned the stadium into a sea of green, with performances from local artists adding to the festive atmosphere.

“This campaign is about delivering real change, not just words,” said one party official. “The north must see tangible progress.”

With the MCP gaining momentum, today’s rally marks a critical step in its bid to retain power. As Chakwera takes the stage, all eyes are on whether his message will resonate deeply enough to secure another five-year mandate.

Women’s manifesto movement pushes for gender equality in Malawi

The Women’s Manifesto Movement has urged President Lazarus Chakwera to prioritize gender equality in his governance if he wins the September 16 elections.

The group made the call during the presentation of the Women’s Manifesto at Kamuzu Palace, highlighting key areas that require attention.

The movement is advocating for special parliamentary seats for women to give them a stronger voice in national decision-making.

They also want the Ministry of Gender to maintain its standalone status with increased funding to effectively tackle gender-based violence and other women’s issues.

President Chakwera is being asked to champion the fight against intimate partner violence, which affects 42% of married women in Malawi.

Furthermore, the movement is pushing for a safe and enabling environment for women to participate in politics without fear or hindrance.

NGO Gender Coordination Network coordinator Gevelet Mzembe emphasized the need for a firm government commitment to address these issues.

The Women’s Manifesto Movement believes that implementing these demands will help create a more inclusive and equitable society.
