Bullets are still standing because of Mponda” – Fote

Renowned Malawian sports analyst Peter Fote has said FCB Nyasa Big Bullets made one of their smartest moves by hiring Peter Mponda as part of the coaching panel, stressing that the former Flames captain has played a crucial role in keeping the team competitive this season.

Fote noted that despite the team’s inconsistent form, Bullets’ current position in the TNM Super League is largely due to Mponda’s tactical influence and experience.

“Bullets don’t have top-quality players at the moment who can individually change games like in previous seasons.If the team is still doing well and competing for the title, it’s because of Mponda’s football intelligence and guidance,”He explained.

He was commenting on Bullets’ third defeat of the season against their arch-rivals Mighty Wanderers, a result that has intensified pressure on the defending champions as the league enters its decisive phase.

Fote further observed that Bullets’ struggles this season are linked to the departure of key players such as Nickson Nyasulu, Lloyd Aaron, Clyde Senaji, Ronald Chitiyo Precious Phiri and Gomezgani Chirwa, whose absence has left noticeable gaps in the squad.

“Wanderers have been building their team for the past three years. They are now reaping the rewards of that consistency.Bullets, on the other hand, are in a rebuilding phase, and that’s why comparisons between the two teams are unfair at this point,”he added.

Despite the setbacks, Fote expressed optimism that with Mponda’s technical expertise and leadership, Bullets can still finish the season strongly if they maintain focus and unity in the remaining fixtures.

Meanwhile, Bullets fans have shown mixed reactions some praising Mponda’s impact, while others are calling for the club to sign new players to strengthen the squad ahead of next season.

Fote concluded by urging Bullets’ management to give the technical team full support as they work to restore the team’s dominance in Malawian football.

The Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Members of Parliament have officially resolved to respect and support President Lazarus Chakwera’s decision to appoint former Finance Minister Simplex Chithyola Banda as the new Leader of Opposition in Parliament.

The decision was made during a closed-door caucus meeting held on Tuesday evening at Crossroads Hotel in Lilongwe.

The meeting, which lasted for over two hours, was chaired by the party’s Secretary General, Richard Chimwendo Banda.

Also present at the high-level meeting was the party’s Vice-President, Catherine Gotani Hara, among other senior members of the MCP parliamentary caucus.

Speaking to Nation Online after the meeting, Chimwendo Banda confirmed that all MPs had unanimously agreed to rally behind the President’s appointee.

He emphasized that the resolution reflects the spirit of unity and discipline within the party, as members seek to strengthen internal cohesion ahead of future political goals.

Said Chimwendo Banda: “We have all agreed to rally behind the president’s appointee and we will all work together with one purpose, and that is to make MCP stronger as we are eyeing 2030.”

He further stressed that the party’s focus is now on building a stronger, more organized political structure that will deliver tangible progress and maintain public trust.

Party insiders described the meeting as “peaceful and unifying,” marking a renewed sense of purpose among MCP lawmakers following recent shifts in parliamentary leadership.

The appointment of Simplex Chithyola Banda as Leader of Opposition is seen as a strategic move by President Chakwera to consolidate leadership within the party and ensure continuity in parliamentary coordination.

With this development, the MCP aims to project stability and readiness as it positions itself for the next phase of Malawi’s political and developmental agenda.

A group of young men arrested in Lilongwe sparked dramatic scenes as they appeared in court this week.

Eyewitnesses report that the suspects, who were brought to court in chains, shouted defiantly at the police, declaring that “one day, things will change.”

The young men were visibly emotional, with some raising their voices as police officers escorted them into the courtroom.



Sources said the group shouted at officers during a live broadcast, vowing that the truth would one day be revealed.

Some of the detainees broke into songs praising President Lazarus Chakwera, chanting that they stood firmly behind him.

Police officers struggled to contain the situation as the crowd outside the court also reacted to the chants.

The scene reflected growing tension surrounding the arrests, with onlookers interpreting the chants as both political expression and a cry of frustration.

Authorities have not yet released an official statement explaining the reasons for the arrests or commenting on the detainees’ public remarks.

Observers have called for calm and urged that the case be handled in accordance with the law and respect for human rights.

The incident highlights the increasingly emotional atmosphere in Lilongwe, where political and social tensions continue to shape public discourse.

Minister of Information, Communications and Technology, Shadric Namalomba, has unveiled an ambitious roadmap aimed at stabilising and modernising Malawi’s digital and communication sectors.

Speaking after a high-level management meeting held at the Ministry’s Headquarters in Lilongwe, Namalomba commended his team for their commitment and capacity in navigating the challenges facing the Ministry.

He emphasized the urgency of addressing key issues, notably the financial crisis at Malawi Telecommunications Limited (MTL), stalled digital infrastructure projects, and persistent delays in finalising key policy and legislative frameworks.

“The situation at MTL is a national priority that demands immediate financial and leadership intervention,” the Minister declared, signalling his readiness to confront the crisis head-on.

In a show of strong leadership, Namalomba directed all departments under his Ministry to submit six-month action plans designed to deliver measurable results within a clear timeframe.

He reaffirmed his commitment to transforming the Ministry into a model of efficiency, innovation, and accountability within government.

Secretary for Information and Communications Technology, Harold Msusa, echoed the Minister’s vision, describing the Ministry’s mission as one rooted in the principles of connecting, informing, and transforming Malawi.

Msusa stressed that the Ministry’s focus remains on fostering a digitally empowered nation where access to information drives development and citizen participation.

However, he acknowledged that the Ministry continues to grapple with a number of challenges, including funding delays, gaps in the policy and legislative framework, and the deepening financial woes at MTL.

“These challenges are significant, but with your leadership, they are surmountable,” Msusa assured, expressing confidence in Namalomba’s capacity to steer the Ministry through reform.

The Minister’s renewed sense of urgency signals a strategic shift toward proactive management and innovation-driven governance in Malawi’s ICT sector.
