2,151 graduates selected for government internship programme

The Malawi government has selected 2,151 graduates for the 11th cohort of the Government Internship Programme (GIP). According to Secretary for Labour, Chikondano Mussa, these graduates will be deployed to various ministries, departments, and agencies, where they will receive a monthly stipend of K150,000, an increase from the initial K80,000 following approval by the National Assembly.

This brings the total number of graduates who have benefited from the programme to at least 17,000 across ten cohorts as of June 2025.



The GIP aims to provide graduates with practical work experience and skills, enhancing their employability in the job market.

The Government Internship Programme is a valuable initiative that provides opportunities for young Malawians to gain work experience and develop their skills.

With the increased stipend, interns will be better able to support themselves while gaining valuable experience in their chosen fields.¹

Malawi’s youth unite for innovation and economic empowerment

The 2025 National Youth Summit has kicked off in Lilongwe,on Wednesday,bringing together over 1,200 delegates from Malawi and other African countries.

The three-day summit, organized by the National Youth Council of Malawi, aims to harness youth innovation for economic empowerment and sustainable job creation.

State President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera is set to officially launch the 2 billion kwacha youth innovation fund, a government-financed project designed to empower young people with resources to start businesses and other ventures.


This initiative is expected to have a significant impact on the lives of many young Malawians.

The summit will feature breakaway sessions where young people will tackle issues affecting them and explore solutions. With a focus on innovation and economic empowerment, the summit is an opportunity for young people to share ideas, learn from each other, and develop skills that will help them drive positive change in their communities.

The theme of this year’s summit, “Harnessing youth innovation for economic empowerment and sustainable job creation toward Malawi 2063,” highlights the importance of youth-led innovation in shaping the country’s future.

By empowering young people with resources and support, Malawi can unlock its full potential and achieve sustainable economic growth.

The summit is attended by 800 young people from different youth groups, who are eager to engage in productive conversations and learn from each other.

Hammers brings back Elias Chirambo as Head Coach

Struggling TNM Super League side Mzuzu City Hammers Football Club have reappointed  Elias Chirambo as the team’s Head Coach.

According to a statement released by the club on Tuesday evening, Chirambo has signed a 1-year performance-based contract.

Chirambo, takes over the reins from Steven Nkwinika, who left the club earlier this season.



He says his main task will be to restore the team’s lost glory.

Hammers are currently second from the bottom on the TNM Super League log table having accumulated 8 points from 9 games.

Mathumela Music Festival returns in August

Organisers of Mathumela Music Festival have announced that this year’s festival will take place on 10 August, 2025 at Masintha Ground in Kawale, Lilongwe.

Musician ‘Lulu’ who is the founder of the free music event said preparations for this year’s festival have already started and that people should expect a lot of surprises.

The free festival was first launched in 2020 and it brings together both established and up and coming artists to showcase their skills.

Lulu, real-name Lawrence Khwisa, created the festival as one way of giving back to the people for supporting his talent, and provide a platform for up and coming artists to showcase their skills.

Apart from music, this year’s festival will feature a special performance by comedian Tame Mwawa popularly known in entertainment circles as ‘Ching’aning’ani’.

Neno district council crowned best performing local authority in LAPA awards

Neno District Council has emerged as the top-performing local authority in the 2024 Local Authority Performance Assessment (LAPA) awards, scoring an impressive 93%.

Dowa and Nkhotakota district councils followed closely, tying for second place with scores of 92%.

Minister of Local Government, Unity and Culture, Richard Chimwendo Banda, presented the awards in Salima, praising the councils for demonstrating significant improvements in governance and financial accountability.


“All 28 district councils have qualified for Performance-Based Grants, reflecting a positive shift in resource management,” he said.

The LAPA assessment evaluates local authorities’ performance in areas such as development planning, procurement, financial management, and health service delivery.

The awards aim to promote good governance and accountability in local councils.

The recognition is expected to motivate councils to continue enhancing efficiency and effectiveness in resource utilization, ultimately improving the lives of Malawians.

With all 28 district councils qualifying for Performance-Based Grants, the future looks promising for local governance in Malawi.
