Clash of NICO Netball Giants on today

The One NICO Top 12 Netball Cup is finally set to kick off in Blantyre today, a start to a promising and exciting eight weeks of netball action.

The much-anticipated tournament will bring together 12 best netball teams in the country, all vying for the coveted title.

In the opening ceremonial game, reigning champions Kukoma Diamonds will lock horns with fierce central region rivals Blue Eagles in a clash that promises to set the tone for the tournament. Both teams have a rich history of competition, and this match-up is expected to be a closely contested and intense affair.

Kukoma Diamonds, known for their dominant performance in previous tournaments, will be looking to start their campaign on a winning note. Meanwhile, Blue Eagles will be eager to prove themselves as strong contenders for the title.

With both teams boasting talented players and a strong team dynamic, this match-up is expected to be a thrilling encounter.

Other teams participating in the NICO Top 12 Netball Cup include some of the best netball sides in the country. With a competitive knockout format and high stakes, each team will need to bring their A-game to succeed.

According to the Netball association of Malawi (NAM), The One NICO Top 12 Netball Cup promises to deliver action-packed netball, with thrilling matches and intense competition.

In a bid to ensure that fans win twice, NICO Corporate Affairs Manager, Mbumba Mlia-Ndasauka said NICO has planned a financial literacy session within the program to equip both fans and players with financial knowledge.

“We have a plan to build the Queens. We have a plan to empower the fans and the players with financial knowledge. We have a plan that we all win. We do not want to leave anyone behind. I therefore invite all Blantyre Netball enthusiasts to come and be part of this exciting Game PLAN,” said Mlia-Ndasauka.

The opening game is happening today at Blantyre Sports Arena (formerly Blantyre Youth Centre). This will start after a Cup parade from NICO offices at Chibisa House in Blantyre to the Blantyre Sports Arena.

Nankhuni hailed as genuine transformative leader for supporting Tsokankanasi and State House CDSS graduation ceremonies

Aspiring Member of Parliament for Lilongwe City Centre, Gift Nankhuni on Friday presided over the graduation ceremony of form four students at Tsokankanasi Community Day Secondary School in the capital city Lilongwe.

Speaking during the ceremony Nankhuni urged the graduating students to prepare well as they are destined to write this year’s Malawi School Certificate Examination in June this year.


Nankhuni said Form four examination is not the end of education journey but the beginning of the trip.

During the ceremony , Nankhuni promised to sponsor such ceremonies annually once voted into power come September 2025, as member of Parliament.
Nankhuni already supported the ceremony with K1.6 Million.

Nankhuni presided over Tsokankanasi Graduation ceremony after briefly attending graduation ceremony for the State House Community Day Secondary School where he contributed K1Million towards the graduation and pledged additional support towards same ceremonies once voted in power.

Speaking during the ceremony headteacher of the school Mr Frank Kaombe commended Nankhuni for supporting the graduation ceremony financially.

Kaombe said Hon. Nankhuni has demonstrated to be a real leader who will touch the lives of many people once voted into power as MP.

Kaombe said most shadow Mps wait for their win to start supporting the constituency development projects but not Mr Nankhuni.

“He gave us K1.6Million which was a budget for this graduation ceremony we say thank you for this,” said Mr Kaombe.

Mr Kaombe has since requested for security fence for the school. During the yesterday day event 120 students graduated from the school of which 98 were day students 22 were from open distance learning. The school has 290 generic students and 170 open distant learners.

Tsokankanasi was built by a Norwegian Charity Organization called Lets Build Malawi and handed over on 12 February , 2025.

The school previous operated at Mphungu in area 12.

Paul Banda’s medical trip stalls

The plight of  the founder of Balaka Reggae, Paul Banda,has taken a distressing turn.

Despite efforts to raise funds for his medical treatment abroad, Banda’s condition continues to deteriorate, and his trip to India remains stalled,according to journalist Deus Sandram’s Facebook post.

Several months ago, a young man from Machinjiri, Blantyre, offered to donate a kidney to Banda, and arrangements were made for the trip.

However, progress has been slow, and Banda’s health continues to worsen.

The young man, who has relocated to Blantyre for Banda’s dialysis sessions, is equally frustrated, incurring expenses on rentals and transportation while waiting for the trip to materialize.

Banda is Malawi’s veteran musician.

He was born on 16 October 1963.

He is the elder brother to the late musician Lucius Banda.

He is the brains behind the country’s first pop group Alleluya Band. The band was founded in the late 1970’s.

He later left and began working as a solo artist. Besides singing, he is also a music producer.

He owns a studio called Imbirani Yahweh Studios.

He has produced music to artists such as late Lucius Banda, Billy Kaunda, Mlaka Maliro, Joseph Tembo, Coss Chiwalo, Charles Sinetre, Charles Nsaku and many others.

He has 14 albums under his name.

Spyral Mwenya’s memorial show to take place on June 28

Loudmusic Fest who are the organisers of the memorial music show for musician and graphic designer Spyral Mwenya, have released a line up for the event slated to take place on June, 28, 2025 at Moneymen Club in Blantyre.

The lineup include some big urban artists like Phyzix, Che Wikise, Fredo, Tuno, Afana Ceez, Tsar Leo, Hayze Engola,TrappyBeats, Cyclone,Barry One and Classick.

The show will also include performances by renowned DJs like Mighty Virus, DJ West, Sili Flame, DJ Vinneq and Exit the DJ.

According to the organisers, the event is going to be hosted by Annita Phoenix Mabedi and comedian Ching’aning’ani.

Spyral real name, “Kennedy Mwenya” died at the age of 29 on 25 June, 2024 following a road accident in Mzuzu.
