Minister of Homeland Security, Ken Zikhale Ng’oma, has urged men and women in uniform under the Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services to take sporting activities as a profession.

He was speaking over the weekend at Fisheries College during a Director General’s (DG’s) trophy sports tournament.

Ng’oma said like the Malawi Defense Force and  Malawi Police Service;  Department of Immigration is capable of having football and netball teams that can compete with other national teams in the super league.

“I am excited to see soldiers under the Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services doing sporting activities to keep themselves physically fit.

“From the tournament, we have seen so many talents from the officers, and because of that, we would want them to join national teams so that they are able to compete with clubs in the super league,” said Ng’oma.

The DG’s trophy stalled for some years and on Sunday attracted all four regions, as well as the department’s headquarters.

Acting DG for Immigration, Fletcher Nyirenda, commended government and other sponsors such as Old Mutual and Standard Bank for supporting the trophy.

Nyirenda said apart from keeping officers physically fit, the tournament will also provide platform for officers to interact.

“We are happy now that the trophy is back and that we have government’s full support. This is a good platform where our officers come together to interact and socialize thereby creating a conducive platform for seniors to share ideas with their juniors,” said Nyirenda.

Over 300 immigration officers across the country participated in the trophy, which had games like tag of war, volleyball, basketball, football and netball.

Rays of Hope provides remedial initiatives to educate children

By Vincent Gunde

The Rays of Hope is a Non-Governmental Organization that uses a transformative education model to build teachers’ capacity, support learners, and provide financial inclusion solutions to youth for productive life.  It nurtures children and youth with abilities essential for life management, academic excellence, and spiritual development to become competent leaders.

The organization  envisioned every child and youth access to transformative education.
In partnership with Phillip Moris International (PMI), and in a consortium with CYECE and AGE Africa, Rays of Hope implements a Holistic Opportunity for Pupil Excellence (HOPE) Project, a tutor led tutoring initiative in Dowa District targeting standards 5 to 8 learners from Mtsilo, Kalonga, Senga, Chulu, Simbi, Kalikulu and Chambizi primary schools.

This initiative will complement the already existing project called ‘End to End Scholarships’ which is supported by Phillip Morris International.
Presenting the initiative to the District executive committee (DEC) in Dowa, Rays of Hope’s Programs Manager, Mr. John Zakeyo, provided a rationale for the project HOPE Project saying that the current number of learners in the targeted schools selected to national and district level secondary schools (2024 PSLCE results) only stood at 2.1% and 6% respectively. The majority, 86.3% were selected to community day secondary schools.  End to End Scholarship Program supports learners who are selected to dissent secondary schools and currently the number of  students who make it are low as highlighted above.

Mr. Zakeyo further said his organization will complement the efforts of the schools by providing free tutoring lessons to the learners after school hours and strengthen teachers capacities to enable them teach well.  He further said that the HOPE initiative is designed to increase chances of secondary school selection of learners in senior primary school classes in the  selected schools in Kasungu and Dowa.  Ultimately, the project will contribute to high completion and retention rate of learners in higher primary school sections in Dowa and Kasungu districts.  An increase in learners selected to district and national secondary schools means more learners benefiting from secondary school End to End Scholarships.

In his remarks, Dowa District Council’s Acting Chief Planning Officer Yusuf Laki welcomed the program into the district appealing to partners to support it so that it reaches out to all the intended beneficiaries in the district. Laki called on partners to share progress of the projects which are being implemented in the district and signing Memorandum of Understandings with the Council and the CSO Network to enhance cooperation, transparency and accountability purposes.

Phillip Morris International (PMI) will fund the implementation of the program with an annual budget of 71,000 US Dollars for  the two districts of Dowa and Kasungu.

Vice President Dr. Michael Usi has called on the people of Mwanza to ensure they register with the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) to secure their right to vote in the 2025 General Elections. Dr. Usi made the appeal during a whistle-stop tour in Thambani on Monday, aimed at encouraging voter registration in the district.

Speaking to a gathering at Kayera Village under Group Village Headman Tsegulani in the area of Senior Chief Govati, Dr. Usi emphasized the importance of civic engagement. “Voting is your democratic right and a powerful tool to shape the future of our nation. Register now so that you can exercise this right in 2025,” he said.

During his visit, the Vice President also inspected the Kayera Health Post, highlighting the government’s commitment to improving healthcare services in rural areas. He reassured the community of the administration’s plans to uplift their well-being through enhanced health infrastructure and other development initiatives.

“The government is dedicated to ensuring that quality healthcare is accessible to all, including those in remote areas like this. Together, we can build a healthier and stronger Malawi,” Dr. Usi said.

Earlier in the day, Dr. Usi toured Senior Chief Nthache’s house, currently under construction by the government. The Vice President’s visit demonstrated the administration’s effort to improve living conditions for traditional leaders, acknowledging their critical role in community leadership and development.

Dr. Michael Usi’s tour in Mwanza underscores the government’s dual focus on promoting civic participation through voter registration and driving development initiatives to improve the quality of life for all Malawians. As the 2025 elections draw nearer, the Vice President’s call to action is a reminder of the collective responsibility to strengthen democracy in the country.

Gladys Ganda raises concerns over NRB voter registration challenges

Member of Parliament for Nsanje Lalanje, Gladys Ganda, has expressed frustration over challenges faced by the National Registration Bureau (NRB) in facilitating voter registration in the Shire Valley and other areas. According to Ganda, some registration centers lack functional computers, which are either damaged or unavailable, hindering the process.

She also noted that some individuals who manage to register are being told to collect their cards after two weeks, further complicating the process for many residents.

Ganda, along with her party representatives, visited affected centers to assess the situation and engage with relevant officials. During the discussions, the officials assured them that the problems would be resolved within two days.

“We are closely monitoring the situation and expecting that all these issues will be fixed as promised. If not, we will take appropriate action,” Ganda warned.

Efforts to get comments from MEC Deputy Spokesperson Richard Mveriwa and NRB Chief Registrar Mphatso Sambo were unsuccessful, as they did not respond to calls for clarification on the matter.

The delays and inefficiencies have raised concerns among residents and stakeholders, as they could impact the smooth progression of the voter registration process. With the 2025 General Elections approaching, ensuring accessible and functional registration systems remains critical to guaranteeing citizens’ right to vote.

Ganda has called for urgent action to address these challenges, emphasizing that a failure to resolve the issues promptly could lead to further action from her and her team.
