Chipiku Stores, a prominent retail chain in Malawi, is facing serious allegations of workplace abuses, including exploitation, harassment, and unfair treatment of employees. Multiple reports obtained by this publication reveal a disturbing pattern of mistreatment, sparking outrage and demands for accountability.

According to the reports, workers at Chipiku Stores have been subjected to various forms of mistreatment, including sexual harassment, verbal abuse, and physical violence.

Some employees claim they have been forced to work for an entire year without any holidays, while others report receiving meager salaries, particularly when compared to their expatriate Asian counterparts performing similar roles.

“There are too many Indian workers doing manual work, and they are paid much more than us locals,” one report alleges. This perceived disparity in treatment has created a toxic work environment, with many employees feeling exploited and undervalued.

Furthermore, employees accuse the company of routinely selling expired goods and instructing staff to hide these items whenever health inspectors visit the stores.

This practice raises serious concerns about consumer safety and the company’s commitment to ethical business practices.

The reports specifically call for urgent intervention from the Minister of Labour and related authorities, urging them to visit Chipiku’s main shop in Area 4 and the outlet at Game Complex in Lilongwe. “Kukuchitika nkhanza kwambiri (There is a lot of abuse happening here),” one source lamented.

Efforts to get a comment from Chipiku Stores management have so far been unsuccessful.

The company’s silence on the matter has only fueled speculation and outrage, with many calling for a thorough investigation into the allegations.

As the scandal continues to unfold, the Malawi government is under pressure to take decisive action to address the claims of mistreatment and unethical practices at Chipiku Stores.

The Minister of Labour, in particular, is expected to play a key role in investigating the allegations and ensuring that the company is held accountable for any wrongdoing.

The allegations of workplace abuse and unethical practices at Chipiku Stores are deeply disturbing and warrant immediate attention from the authorities.

As the investigation unfolds, it is essential that the company is held accountable for any wrongdoing and that measures are put in place to prevent such abuses from happening in the future.

Pope Francis suffers bruised arm after fall at Vatican residence

By Twink Jones Gadama

Pope Francis, the head of the Catholic Church, suffered a bruised arm after falling at his residence in the Vatican on January 16, 2025. According to Vatican officials, the 88-year-old pontiff fell at his home in the Santa Marta house, resulting in a contusion on his right forearm.

The Vatican revealed that Pope Francis’ arm was not fractured in the accident, but it was braced as a precautionary measure. Photos taken on the morning of January 16 show the Pope’s arm tied up in a white sling during his scheduled audiences at the apostolic palace.

Poor Francis

This incident marks the second time in recent months that Pope Francis has been injured in a fall. In December 2024, the Pope suffered a mild injury when he hit his chin on his nightstand, causing a large hematoma on the lower right side of his cheek.

Despite his recent health setbacks, Pope Francis has continued to maintain a busy schedule. On the morning of January 16, he met with various dignitaries, including the Bektashi Islamic leader of Tirana, Albania, and the chairwoman of the World Food Security Committee.

Pope Francis has been showing signs of aging in recent years, often using a wheelchair to move around and experiencing occasional problems with breathlessness. At Christmas Eve Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica on December 24, 2024, he was seen wearing what appeared to be hearing devices.

The Pope’s health has been a subject of concern in recent years, with many speculating about his potential retirement. However, Pope Francis has shown no signs of slowing down, continuing to lead the Catholic Church with his trademark energy and dedication.

As the Pope recovers from his latest injury, Catholics around the world are sending their well-wishes and prayers for his speedy recovery. Despite the challenges he faces, Pope Francis remains a beloved and respected figure, known for his compassion, wisdom, and commitment to social justice.

Chinese National and 3 Malawians Arrested Over Vandalism of ESCOM Assets

By Cosmas Kaunga,

Police in Lilongwe arrested four individuals on Saturday, January 18, 2025 in connection with a series of vandalism cases targeting the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) Limited assets.

The suspects are Xu Hongxiang (62), a Chinese national, and Malawians—Eliko Frackson (25) of Nsalu Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Kabudula, Lilongwe; Frezer Crement (26) of Chidzenje Village, T/A Kalolo, Lilongwe; and Yamala Lameck (29) of T/A Nsema in Mulanje.

During the operation at a warehouse in Lilongwe, the police and ESCOM security team recovered over 40 bags of stolen copper wires, amounting to approximately 18 tonnes suspected to have been stolen from various sites of the power utility company.

Commenting on the arrests, National Police Deputy Spokesperson, Harry Namwaza, said they have stepped up efforts to combat vandalism targeting assets for utility companies such as ESCOM.

“We are working closely with ESCOM and other affected institutions to ensure that individuals involved in vandalizing, stealing, or trading stolen items are brought to justice,” he said.
Namwaza attributed the rise in vandalism to the availability of lucrative markets for stolen materials.

“We urge all Malawians to report any suspicious activities involving ESCOM property to the police. Together, we can protect our infrastructure and support the country’s development,” he said.

ESCOM Acting Regional Manager for the Centre, MacDowel Kumatso, lamented the devastating impact of vandalism on the corporation’s operations.

“For example, the Chinese national was buying copper at K15,000 per kilogramme. With over 15 tonnes of copper wire confiscated, the financial loss to ESCOM is substantial,” he said.

Kumatso noted that vandalism continues to hinder ESCOM’s ability to expand its services.

“We are forced to redirect resources to repair and replace vandalized equipment, delaying our efforts to connect new areas to the electricity grid,” he said.

The suspects are expected to appear in court soon.

Being found in possession of stolen ESCOM equipment and vandalising the same are offences that attract a maximum 30-year jail term with no option of paying a fine. This is according to the Electricity Amendment Act of 2024.
