Kamtukule urges youth to acquire practical skills

Minister of Tourism,Vera Kamtukule, has challenged young people to go beyond just having ‘vibes’ and focus on acquiring practical skills that can help them contribute meaningfully to the country’s development.

Speaking at the launch of 7 Arts Holdings in Lilongwe on Friday evening, Kamtukule emphasized that having a positive attitude alone is not enough to achieve success.

“You need to have practical skills that can put food on the table and pay the bills,” she said.

The minister encouraged youth to harness the power of networking, learn from others, and continuously improve their skills.

“The kind of conversations you have determine where you’ll end up,” she added.

On his part,7 Arts Holdings Limited Chief Executive Officer(CEO ) Mark Phanga shared that the business is the realization of a childhood dream, driven by his passion for artistic endeavors and desire to turn creativity into enterprise.

7 Arts Holdings comprises seven businesses, including media services, dance studio, confectionery, and more.

Chithope Mwale appointed MLAB Director

Malawi Legal Aid Bureau(MLAB) has announced the appointment of Chimwemwe Chithope Mwale as its new Director, effective July 1, 2025.

Mwale, who has been serving as Acting Director since September 2024, brings over 14 years of experience in promoting and protecting the rights of the indigent and vulnerable groups.

According to a statement from the bureau, Mwale’s appointment was made by the Public Appointments Committee(PAC) in line with Section 9 of the Legal Aid Act.

Mwale holds a Master of Laws in Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa from the University of Pretoria (cum laude) and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Malawi(UNIMA).

Some of his notable achievements include being a Makwanyane Capital Defence Fellow, a World Justice Challenge Winner, and a Victor Dankwa Prize recipient.

Mwale also became the second Malawian lawyer admitted to the Registry of the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

MLAB is a department of the government established under section 3 of the Legal Aid Act, with the mandate, among others, to provide legal aid in accordance with the Legal Aid Act.

We are open to alliances- Chihana

Alliance For Democracy (AFORD) President Enock Chihana has expressed his party’s willingness to form a political alliance with any party that shares its ideologies ahead of the September 16 polls.

Speaking at a rousing political rally at Mgona ground in Lilongwe on Sunday, Chihana emphasized that his party will no longer be swayed by alliances that prioritize personal interests over the welfare of the people.

He expressed disappointment for joining the Tonse Alliance in the 2020 fresh presidential elections.

Chihana claimed that he was misled into joining the alliance and vowed not to repeat the same mistake.

On his part, the party’s President Timothy Mtambo urged Malawians not to abandon AFORD.

Mtambo said AFORD is the only party with practical policies to transform the country.

AFORD came in the political lime light in 1993 and its founder the late Chakufwa Chihana is known as one of the key fighters for multiparty democracy in Malawi.

The party has a stronghold in the northern region.

The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Vice President for the Southern Region,Joseph Mwanamveka,has assured Malawians that voting for their presidential hopeful,Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika in the upcoming September 16 elections would solve  problems the country is currently going through such as foreign exchange shortages, medicine shortages in hospitals, and food insecurity.

He was speaking at Lunzu Primary School Ground on Sunday where he organized a political rally.

Mwanamvekha said the poverty has excessively increased under the current administration, with approximately 80% of Malawians struggling to make ends meet, while only 20% are above the poverty line.

He described the situation as unacceptable and emphasized that Mutharika is committed to addressing these challenges and bailing out Malawi.

According to Mwanamvekha, Mutharika has the expertise and experience to tackle the country’s problems and improve the lives of Malawians.

The DPP Vice President urged Malawians to consider voting for Mutharika to bring about positive change in the country.

On his part,DPP Director of  Political Affairs Ben Phiri said the party is ready for alliance.

He said those claiming that the party does not want alliance are using it as a propaganda.

BLM launches youth health hotline

Banja La Mtsogolo (BLM) on Saturday June 21,2025 launched a toll-free number, 1131, aimed at bridging the gap in access to sexual reproductive health information and services among youths in the country.

The initiative launched at Masintha Ground in Lilongwe, promises to be a game-changer in the country’s healthcare landscape.

As part commemorating the launch,BLM provided free services, including cervical cancer screening, counseling, family planning, and HIV testing.

Speaking to journalists, Contact Centre Lead for BLM,Taonga Mtambo,emphasized that the platform will provide a safe and confidential space for individuals to express their views freely, without fear of judgment.

“Many young people are often hesitant to discuss sexual reproductive health issues openly, and this initiative seeks to address this challenge,” said Mtambo.

On her part,Ellah Tambalaweko from Mvunguti Youth Network praised BLM for the innovative initiative, stating that it will significantly reduce the distances youth cover to access sexual reproductive health services.

Established in 1987,BLM provides quality Family Planning and Reproductive Healthcare including HIV/AIDS information and interventions in the country.

The organization is a senior member of the Marie Stopes International (MSI) Reproductive Choices Partnership which works in 37 countries globally.

In Malawi, BLM serves over 800,000 clients annually and makes a significant contribution to national family planning objectives.

The organization has national coverage, operating through 25 clinics, and numerous outreach clinic sites.
