Vice President Dr. Michael Usi was in Blantyre today, actively monitoring the Lean Season Food Insecurity Response Program at Kamuzu Stadium. The program aims to provide critical support to vulnerable households during the lean season. As part of the initiative, four trucks carrying 600 bags of maize were offloaded for distribution, ensuring that those most in need receive the necessary assistance.

Dr. Usi emphasized the importance of accountability, stressing that the maize must be distributed to the rightful beneficiaries. This commitment to transparency and fairness is crucial in ensuring that the program achieves its intended goals and supports those who are most vulnerable.

Vice President Usi

The Lean Season Food Insecurity Response Program is a critical initiative aimed at addressing the food security challenges faced by many households in Malawi. The program is part of the government’s efforts to mitigate the impact of food insecurity, which is exacerbated by factors such as climate change, economic instability, and population growth.

Malawi has been experiencing food security challenges in recent years, particularly during the lean season, which typically runs from December to March. The challenges are often compounded by factors such as drought, flooding, and economic instability, which can lead to food shortages and price increases.

The government, with support from development partners, has been working to address these challenges through various initiatives, including the Lean Season Food Insecurity Response Program. The program provides critical support to vulnerable households, including food assistance, cash transfers, and other forms of support.

The distribution of maize at Kamuzu Stadium is part of the program’s efforts to reach vulnerable households in Blantyre and surrounding areas. The maize is being distributed to households that have been identified as being most in need, based on criteria such as poverty levels, household size, and vulnerability to food insecurity.

Dr. Usi’s oversight of the program is a clear indication of the government’s commitment to addressing food security challenges in Malawi. The Vice President’s emphasis on accountability and transparency is also a welcome development, as it ensures that the program is implemented in a fair and equitable manner.

As Malawi continues to grapple with food security challenges, initiatives like the Lean Season Food Insecurity Response Program are critical in providing support to vulnerable households. The government’s commitment to addressing these challenges, combined with the support of development partners, is a positive step towards ensuring that all Malawians have access to sufficient and nutritious food.

In related news, the World Food Programme (WFP) has also been providing emergency food assistance to support Malawians impacted by the El Niño-fueled food insecurity crisis.

The WFP’s efforts are part of a broader response to the food security challenges facing Malawi, and demonstrate the importance of international cooperation and support in addressing these challenges.

Chakwera committed to NEEF Fertilizer program- Kunkuyu

By Durell Namasani

Minister of Information and Digitalisation, Moses Kunkuyu Karongashawa, has stated that President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera’s administration is committed to ensuring that the benefits of the National Economic Empowerment Fund (NEEF) fertilizer loan program reach the intended beneficiaries across the country.

He made these remarks during the launch of the NEEF loan fertilizer distribution at Lobi Trading Centre in the area of Senior Chief Kachere, Dedza District.

Kunkuyu emphasised that President Chakwera will ensure that farmers receive what they are promised so they can fully benefit from the initiative.

He noted that this program will stimulate growth in the agriculture sector, which is likely to improve the country’s foreign exchange reserves when agricultural commodities are sold on the international market.

Kunkuyu at the NEEF Fertilizer distribution

“You are the ones feeding the country, and you need to be fully empowered. We want to see you driving cars and buying from the profits that you accumulate from this initiative,” Kunkuyu said.

He commended local chiefs for encouraging their communities to avoid reliance on free handouts and to embrace hard work, which is essential for enhancing agricultural growth in the area.

NEEF Board Chairperson Jefta Mtemwa indicated that the program was launched in 2024 with an initial budget of K25 billion, benefiting 11,500 farmers.

This year, the government has allocated K150 billion, targeting 400,000 farmers in 2025. He remarked that this aligns with the President’s vision to revitalize and transform agriculture, aiming to make Malawi a food-secure nation.

Mtemwa assured the beneficiaries that NEEF is working diligently to assist all applicants for loans, especially as the country is currently experiencing good rainfall.

Member of Parliament for Dedza South West, Clement Mlombwa, described this development as a testament to the government’s promises and commitment to promoting self-reliance among the citizens.

He expressed optimism that the program would help eradicate hunger in Dedza, as most farmers depend on agriculture for their livelihoods.

He highlighted the importance of Lobi as a key agricultural production area and stressed the need for people in the district to benefit from the NEEF program.

In his remarks, Group Village Headman Lobi expressed gratitude for the initiative, stating it will significantly benefit farmers in the area. He urged farmers to resist the temptation to engage with vendors and to ensure they maximize their production.

Nicolas Pemba, a beneficiary representing Uli Kuti Club, also commended the government for the positive progress of the program.
