Prophet Shepherd Bushiri’s 43rd birthday celebration was a star-studded affair, with Zambian music sensation Yo Maps headlining the event at the Golden Peacock Complex in Lilongwe.

The event, which took place on Saturday, February 21, 2026, drew high-profile guests, including Malawi’s Second Vice President Enoch Chihana, former Vice President Michael Usi, and Zimbabwe’s Prophet Uebert Angel.

Bushiri and Yo Maps

Yo Maps delivered a high-energy performance, thrilling the audience with hits like “So Mone” and “Kondwa”.

The celebration also featured gospel singer Steve Spesho, son of the late Grace Chinga, who performed a dedicated birthday song for Bushiri.

While reports suggest Yo Maps was paid for his performance, the exact figure remains unverified, with some sources citing his booking fee as approximately $46,000 USD (roughly 80 million MWK).

Bushiri’s philanthropic efforts, including a recent 500 million MWK donation to Malawi Got Talent, have contributed to the public’s interest in his events.

The event showcased Bushiri’s influence across the region, blending faith and entertainment.

At least 4,000 households in Traditional Authority Khwethemule in Thyolo District have received relief food items from Faizan Global Relief Foundation (FGRF).

The items, including maize flour, sugar, rice, salt, and soya pieces, are meant to help those fasting during the Muslim Holy Month of Ramadan have food to break their fasting with.

Speaking during the distribution exercise, FGRF’s Director of Public Relations and Projects, Ibrahim Omar Mataya, said it was important for families to have food during Ramadan, emphasizing the significance of charity and compassion during this sacred month.

On her part, Minister of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare Mary Navicha, who is also Thyolo Thava legislator, expressed gratitude for the support, acknowledging FGRF’s efforts in addressing food insecurity in the area.

The organisation has been distributing relief food to hunger-stricken Malawians following President Peter Mutharika’s declaration of a State of National Disaster in October last year, highlighting the country’s ongoing struggle with food security.

FGRF’s initiative is part of its broader efforts to support vulnerable communities, particularly during times of crisis, and aligns with the government’s appeal for humanitarian assistance to address the country’s food shortages.

Dwasco Sacco’s assets have grown significantly, reaching K3.1 billion in 2025, representing a 43.7 percent increase from K2.18 billion in 2024.

Speaking during this year’s annual general meeting in Dwangwa, Nkhotakota, Dwasco Sacco board chairperson Abel Musopole attributed the growth to the Sacco’s efforts to improve its services and attract more members.

The membership has also seen a notable increase, rising from 6,370 to over 7,093, marking an 11.3 percent growth, Musopole said.

Musopole emphasized the importance of timely loan repayment to maintain favorable interest rates, urging members to be responsible borrowers.

Malawi Union of Savings and Credit Cooperatives (MUSCCO) Head of Finance and Administration Kingsley Mulewa advised Dwasco Sacco members to boost their deposits, currently at 7 percent, to drive further growth.

One long-standing member, Nancy Msiska, expressed her excitement about the Sacco’s progress and was thrilled to receive a bicycle as a token of appreciation for her loyalty.

The Sacco’s growth is a testament to its commitment to serving its members and contributing to the local economy.

Pensioners’ Peril: Amaryllis Hotel Deal Sparks Outrage

The decision by the Registrar of Financial Institutions to call for the immediate suspension or revision of the Public Service Pension Trust Fund’s (PSPTF) acquisition of the Amaryllis Hotel is a welcome move that deserves applause.

One can believe that this transaction no longer represents value for the pensioners, and it is imperative that the deal be scrutinized thoroughly to ensure that the interests of those who took their hard-earned savings to the PSPTF are protected.

The deal appears grossly inflated, effectively amounting to a blank cheque issued to the seller and their intermediaries, which raises serious concerns about potential theft and the loss of billions of kwacha belonging to the pensioners.

More concerning, it raises a serious red flag over what can only be described as potential theft: one could see pensioners lose billions of kwacha, a prospect that is nothing short of alarming.

This is either the “Sale of the Century” or the “Heist of the Decade,” and it is crucial that those responsible are held accountable for their actions.

The rational behind the MK128 billion valuation raises a lot of questions, and it is imperative that the authorities provide clarity on the matter.

Furthermore, one can be persuaded to believe that the board may have breached the law, and possibly the PSPTF’s own constitutional requirements, which mandate that major decisions of this nature be subject to a process of public participation by the members.

To imagine that the Fund fails to pay its bona fide pensioners their dues, and that this transaction comes to light in such a context, is not only deeply saddening but utterly unacceptable.

The Public Service Pension Trust Fund is a vital, mandatory savings mechanism designed to ensure workers retire with dignity, providing essential safety nets against old-age poverty, disability, and death.

Protecting the PSPTF requires strict compliance from employers in remitting contributions, strengthening governance to ensure transparency, and maintaining investment stability to secure retirement for generations.

The people of Malawi deserve transparency and accountability, and it is the duty of the authorities to ensure that the PSPTF is managed in the best interests of its members.

Hon Noel Lipipa MP’s call for scrutiny of the deal highlights the need for urgent action to protect the pensioners’ interests and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
