UGI awards 2024-2025 top-performing KUHES students

United General Insurance Company (UGI) has committed K8 million to reward 38 top-performing students at the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHES) for the 2023/2024 academic year.

The recipients, from the Schools of Medicine, Oral Health, Nursing, Sciences, and Global and Public Health, earned a place on the Dean’s List after achieving distinctions of 75 percent and above.



Speaking during the awards presentation ceremony on Friday, UGI Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Grant Mwenechanya, said the awards underline the company’s commitment to building a healthier Malawi.

“Doctors and other medical professionals are vital for a healthy nation. As a company, we also depend on healthy employees, which is why we found it important to fund these awards,” said Mwenechanya.

Chairperson of the KUHES School Deans, Professor John Phuka, said the recognition boosts student morale and drives excellence.

“This initiative not only rewards hard work but also inspires future health professionals to aim higher and serve the nation with dedication,” said Phuka.

One of the awardees, Shiv Patel, a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) student, described the recognition as a major motivator.

“It feels rewarding to see our efforts acknowledged. This motivates me to keep pushing and contribute meaningfully to Malawi’s health sector,” said Patel.

The prizes included cash awards of K300,000, K200,000, and K150,000.

NBS Bank National Division League: Royal Bokosi scores a brace as Red Lions beat Mitundu Baptist 2-0

Royal Bokosi scored a goal in each half to give Red Lions maximum points as they beat Mitundu Baptist 2-0 at Balaka Stadium in the NBS Bank National Division League.

Bokosi scored his first goal in the added time of the first half after a beautiful exchange of passes between Dan Nyambose, Brown Gondwe and Bokosi himself.

He then completed his brace with a beautiful finish in the 53rd minute to ensure maximum points for the army side.

The match was not without controversy as Mitundu Baptist goalkeeper Dyson Gama received a straight red card in the 78th minute after slapping Red Lions player Dan Nyambose.

The win means that the Zomba-based soldiers remain top on the log table with 22 points, three points above Namitete Zitha who are second with 19 points.

In other matches played on Sunday, FOMO FC  beat Baka City 3-0 at Mulanje Stadium as Chilumba Barracks beat Bangwe All Stars 1-0 at Mpira Stadium.

In Kasungu, bottom placed Jenda United registered their first win in the league as they beat Chintheche United 2-1 at Kasungu Stadium.

Bullets surrender two-goal lead to draw 3-3 with Karonga United

FCB Nyasa Big Bullets gave up a two-goal lead to draw 3-3 against Karonga United at Kamuzu Stadium and miss the opportunity to finish top in the first round of this season’s TNM Super League.

The home side started the game very well and they got their first goal in the 6th minute through Blessings Mpokera who connected well a free kick by Peter Banda.

The visitors pulled level five minutes later through Benjamin Mapunda who capitalised on a defensive lapse on the part of Bullets.

Mike Mkwate restored Bullets’ lead in the 16th minute after a beautiful exchange of passes from the midfield to give the People’s team a 2-1 lead at half time.



Babatunde Adepoju scored the third goal for Bullets from the penalty spot after a handball incident in the penalty box.

Allen Chihana scored the second goal for the vistors in the 77th minute and Ishmael Chizinga leveled the scores in the 84th minute to help his side earn a deserving away point on the final day of the first round.

Elsewhere, the match between  Civil Service United and league leaders Mighty Wanderers ended goalless as Silver Strikers beat Mzuzu City Hammers 2-0 at Rumphi Stadium.

The match between Chitipa United and Blue Eagles which was attended by President Lazarus Chakwera at Chitipa Stadium, ended 1-0 in favour of the home side.

Wanderers have maintained their top spot as they finish the first round of the TNM Super League with 35 points followed by Bullets who are just a point behind.

Silver Strikers are on the third position with 30 points followed by league debutants Ekhaya FC who are perched on position 4 with 28 points.

Songwe United have finished bottom of the 16-member league after collecting two points from 15 games.

Ngongondo urges universities to champion community-based enterprises

University of Malawi (UNIMA) Executive Dean for the School of Natural and Applied Sciences, Professor Cosmo Ngongondo, has called on universities in the country to play a more active role in promoting and supporting community-based businesses.

Ngongondo, who also leads the university’s Centre for Resilient Agri-Food Systems (CRAFS), made the appeal in Zomba during a seed funding awards ceremony on Friday, where Unima awarded grants in US dollars to seven local enterprises.

He explained that the funding is aimed at supporting businesses that address pressing community needs in sectors such as agribusiness, value addition, and technology.

“Malawi 2063 can be achieved if universities invest in the growth and sustainability of local enterprises,” said Ngongondo.

In her remarks,one of the beneficiaries, Rita Kumwenda of Parah Enterprises in Zomba’s Matawale Township, received US$5,500 for her oyster mushroom and spawn production business.

She said the funds will be used to purchase machinery and enhance value addition processes.

The selected entrepreneurs who also hail from districts such as Blantyre and Mzuzu were drawn from a pool of 200 incubatees who pitched their business ideas to Unima before being shortlisted for support.
