By Chisomo Phiri

The United Transformation Movement (UTM ) party on Saturday evening launched its manifesto titled ‘The People’s Manifesto-The Third Revolution’ at Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC ) in Lilongwe.

The manifesto lauch ceremony was attended by the late Vice President Saulos Chilima’s wife,Mary.

Speaking at the ceremony,UTM president Dalitso Kabambe pledged to usher in a new political culture if elected into office.

Kabambe said his administration would immediately introduce key reforms, including mandatory audits of government spending, the removal of presidential immunity from prosecution, and the appointment of highly qualified individuals to lead the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) and the Office of the Auditor General (AG).

The UTM leader further pledged to instruct the AG to carry out a forensic audit of State House, the Malawi Defence Force (MDF), and the Malawi Police Service within the first three months of his presidency.

The audit, he said, would focus on all expenditures above K5 billion incurred over the past five years.

The former Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM ) Governor also painted a bleak picture of poverty and governance failures since independence in 1964.

“Leaders come and go, but 65 out of every 100 Malawians still do not have food. Children remain stunted because of hunger. Successive governments have failed to address this crisis, what moral ground do they have to seek re-election?” asked Kabambe.

He further noted that unemployment affects 90 percent of Malawians, while the same percentage lacks access to electricity.

Another 90 percent, he said, still do not have access to safe drinking water, and 60 percent live in grass-thatched houses.

“Only 15 percent of Malawians are wealthy, and most of them are politicians,” said Kabambe.

The economist accused the current administration of ruining the country through poor leadership and mismanagement.

He said currently,Malawi’s national debt has ballooned from K4 trillion in 2020 to K18 trillion now.

“But this is only what we are being told. The reality could be that the debt is even higher than that,” he said.

Kabambe argued that the country is in disarray, with rising prices of goods and commodities on the market serving as clear indicators of government failure.

He cited the sharp rise in fertilizer prices as an example, warning that if the current administration under the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) continues in power beyond September 16, Malawians should expect fertilizer prices to reach close to K1 million.

Kabambe said the only solution for Malawians is to change leadership.

UTM was founded in 2018 by Chilima who died in June 2024.

Kabambe took the UTM as a present on November 17,2024 after ermeged victorious during the party’s convention.

Epay Mobile Money launched in Malawi

A new mobile banking company, Epay Limited, on Thursday August 14,2025,officially launched its product in the country called Epay Mobile Money that promises to transform the way Malawians conduct mobile banking, money transfers, and payments.

Speaking during the product launch ceremony at Amaryllis Hotel in Blantyre,Epay Limited Chief Executive Officer(CEO ) Brian Bobby said the company’s innovative platform is designed to remove barriers that have long restricted mobile money services in the country.

“Our product does not restrict any customer to a specific network.Regardless of the mobile network you are using, you can transact on Epay and send payments to other Epay users as if you were all on the same network. This eliminates cross-network charges and ensures convenience for all customers,” said Bobby.

He added that Epay aims to be the most affordable mobile payment service in Malawi, especially during the country’s current economic hardships.

“We know that many Malawians are going through a tough time financially. That is why we have made our transaction charges as affordable as possible, so more people can access and benefit from a mobile payment platform,” said Bobby.

The CEO said Epay services can be accessed through two main channels.

“Non-smartphone users can register and transact by dialing *464#.Smartphone users can download the Epay Wallet Malawi app from the Google Play Store. The app allows self-registration without the need for physical forms.

“To register, customers only need their national ID number. Once registered, they can immediately start sending and receiving money, making payments, and carrying out other transactions,” he said.

Bobby said Epay’s mission is to make mobile banking in the country more inclusive, accessible, and cost-effective.

On his part, the Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM)Executive Director responsible for Financial Sector Regulations, Patrick Muhango, described the launch of Epay platform as a significant step forward in the country’s efforts to deepen financial inclusion and expand access to digital financial services.

He said Epay’s entry into the country’s market is particularly important because it is a locally owned company offering solutions developed with the Malawian context in mind.

“This is a big milestone because the solutions are locally conceptualized and designed. That means the company has considered the realities on the ground, the dynamics, challenges, and security issues that Malawians face  as well as the barriers that prevent some people from participating in such platforms,”  said Mhango.

He added that Epay platform is accessible to both urban and rural populations, helping to bridge the financial services gap across the country.

“This is an effort to get more Malawians to use financial services, not only in towns and cities, but also in rural areas. We see it as a major milestone in advancing our financial inclusion agenda,” he said.

The RBM official pointed out that traditional financial institutions in Malawi still lack infrastructure that reaches every part of the country, making digital financial services a critical tool for broadening access.

“Epay can be used across the nation, providing easy access regardless of location or channel. You do not have to belong to a specific financial institution. As long as you have a platform or service provider, you can send or receive money and carry out transactions,” he explained.

Mhango further observed that mobile money and epayment facilities are now widely available in major retail shops across Malawi, underscoring the growing acceptance of digital payments.

“This is a major milestone for our nation as we work to expand financial services to every Malawian,” he concluded.

Epay Limited was registered in 2022.

Kabambe vows to end nepotism if elected

By Chisomo Phiri

United Transformation Movement (UTM) president Dalitso Kabambe has vowed to end nepotism in government appointments saying that positions in his administration will be filled strictly on merit.

Speaking to 247 Malawi News, Kabambe said Malawi’s public service has long been undermined by appointments based on family ties, tribal affiliation, and personal friendships rather than qualifications and competence.

“One of Malawi’s biggest problems is appointing people based on relationships instead of ability. The result is poor service delivery. In my government, every position will go to the most qualified person  with the right education, relevant experience, and a proven track record.Government is not a place for learning on the job. We are dealing with people’s lives,” he said.

The UTM leader criticised the current administration, claiming that former Vice President late Dr. Saulos Chilima who had both a degree and a master’s in economics  would have been appointed Minister of Finance but the role went to a person from the insurance sector because of personal connections, and is now being handled by someone with a background in a community-based Non-Governmental Organization (NGO).

The former Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM ) Governor added that Mathews Mtumbuka, whom he contested against at a party convention, will lead UTM’s engineering and technology portfolio.

He described Mtumbuka as a highly qualified professional holding a PhD in Engineering from Oxford University, with senior leadership experience as Managing Director of Helios Towers, Director of IT at Airtel, and various international roles, including in Kenya.

“Our country is lagging behind in infrastructure and technology. Our roads are in poor condition, our systems are outdated, and without development in these areas, we cannot grow our economy.Mtumbuka has the solutions Malawians need for the next five years,” he said.

Kabambe said his appointments will prioritise competence over origin, stressing that his administration will focus on building a functional system.

“We are not coming to government to live off your taxes but to work hard and deliver results.

“By 2030, our campaign will not involve giving out free drinks or K50,000 handouts to buy votes, it will be about showing the results of our work in five years,” he said.

The UTM leader urged Malawians to vote for him and the UTM in the September 16 elections, promising a better and more functional  Malawi under his leadership.
