NBS Bank Plc has strategically partnered with the Renewable Energy Industry Association of Malawi (REIAMA) to accelerate access to renewable energy solutions across the country.

Through this partnership, NBS Bank and REIAMA aim to foster sustainable growth within Malawi’s renewable energy sector by co-creating financing solutions tailored to the needs of both project developers and end-users of Renewable Energy Technologies (RET).

Speaking at the signing ceremony in Lilongwe on Thursday, NBS Bank’s Head of Government and International Relations, Mervin Donga, emphasised the Bank’s commitment to supporting the sector.

“We stand ready to work with REIAMA and other stakeholders in unlocking the full potential of the renewable energy value chain. This partnership is aligned with our purpose to support initiatives that drive inclusive growth and improve livelihoods through sustainable finance,” said Donga.

On his part, REIAMA President Brave Mhone applauded the agreement as a significant step towards realising a greener and more inclusive future for Malawi.

“This is not just a partnership on paper, but it is a commitment to co-create solutions, expand access, and develop together. By leveraging each other’s strengths, REIAMA and NBS Bank will help drive down barriers to renewable energy uptake, from financing to implementation,” said Mhone.

According to NBS Bank, the partnership marks the beginning of a coordinated effort to enable broader access to clean energy financing, stimulate local innovation, and encourage the productive use of renewable energy in both rural and urban settings.

NBM plc commits to support SMEs

National Bank of Malawi (NBM) plc has reiterated its commitment to supporting Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs), which are regarded as the backbone of Malawi’s economy.

During an SME appreciation visit to GIMTEC in Blantyre on Friday, NBM plc’s Chief Risk Officer, Charles Ulaya, underscored the Bank’s belief that SMEs are the engine of economic growth and are also propelling Malawi’s growth agenda of 2063.

“We are so impressed that GIMTEC is one of the clients that does not have any other bank account but only maintains with National Bank. We are proud of the kind of partnership we have with them.”

“I just want to emphasise that SMEs are what Malawi needs at the moment as you know, the country is facing a lot of challenges, and SMEs are the ones keeping us afloat. As a Bank, we are geared to support SMEs in the country because they are the engines of economic growth,” said Ulaya

Asked to mention some of the products NBM plc has for SMEs, Ulaya noted that the Bank has a tailor-made SME product profile that defines the service a client is looking for.

“As you know, we are the only bank in the country that has established a development arm, NBM Development Bank. The primary aim is to ensure businesses achieve their growth plans, even when they lack capital. NBM Development Bank can support them by providing equity,” said Ulaya.

In his remarks, GIMTEC Managing Director Gift Mkandawire thanked NBM plc for the visit and for recognising their work.

“I am grateful that NBM visited to understand the problems we are facing so that we can work together to find solutions for the benefit of both the Bank and ourselves. The business is quite volatile, as you know, prices can change every minute.”

“I explained to the Bank officials that sometimes you provide a quotation today, and the client takes two months to decide. By then, prices will be completely different. Due to contractual obligations, you are forced to perform the job at a loss. These are the issues affecting contractors with fluctuating prices,” said Mkandawire.

NBM plc has set aside the month of June to celebrate the backbone of Malawi’s economy: Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs), with scheduled activities including an SME appreciation visit to selected clients by senior officials led by Chief Executive Officer Harold Jiya.

The 5:35-minute song, which blends traditional danceable rhythms with modern beats, opens with Gwaladi’s deep vocal intro, featuring the lines “MCP chipani chathu a Chakwera woyeeee.” The lyrics, which translate to “MCP is our party, Chakwera is great,” have been seen as a bold endorsement of the president and his party.

The song’s music video, posted on Dan Lu’s Facebook page, has generated a lot of buzz, with many users weighing in on the song’s message and Gwaladi’s motivations.

Some have accused Gwaladi of chasing money and using his talent for personal gain, while others have praised him for supporting the president and his party.

Vincent Bernard Nambuzi, a Facebook user, commented, “Deep down, Gwaladi cannot vote for Chakwera.

He is chasing money, and he should use his talent to earn it.

The debate surrounding Gwaladi’s song highlights the complex relationship between music and politics in Malawi. With general elections on the horizon, many artists are using their platforms to express their views and support their preferred candidates.

As the country prepares to go to the polls, it will be interesting to see how music and politics intersect in the coming months.
