United Transformation Movement (UTM) spokesperson Felix Njawala has urged Malawians to vote for the party’s presidential candidate,Dalitso Kabambe, describing him as the only leader with the skills and vision to revive the country’s struggling economy.

Speaking in at a press briefing in Blantyre on Tuesday, Njawala said Kabambe, an economist, is best positioned to ‘put food back on the table’ and address the economic hardships Malawians are facing.

Njawala

“Kabambe is an economic engineer. He is the only one with the skills and the plan to rescue Malawi’s broken economy,” said Njawala.

He emphasized that UTM is more than just a political party, calling it a ‘movement, a mission, and a vision’ that was founded by the late Vice President  Saulos Klaus Chilima.

“In 2019,Chilima secured 21 percent of the national vote, representing more than one million Malawians who believed in this vision. If all those who stood with him vote again, and we add just a few more supporters, UTM will emerge number one in the upcoming elections,” he said.

Njawala dismissed the perception that other parties are dominant, saying none of them reached two million votes in 2019.

He argued that UTM has grown stronger since then and has built support across all districts.

“We have been in every district. We know the hunger, the pain, and the hope that lives in every home. That is why I can assure Malawians that UTM will surprise the so-called big political parties on election day,” said Njawala.

On policy, he highlighted that UTM’s manifesto offers practical solutions, including abolishing the development of quota system in education, allocating K100 billion to each district for infrastructure projects, and fighting corruption.

He stressed that UTM is the only party committed to ending corruption while also seeking justice for the late Chilima, who died in a tragic plane crash  in June last year under what the party describes as ‘suspicious circumstances.’

“This election is not just about politicians. It is about Malawians, their food, their fertilizer, their children’s future, and the Malawi we want to build together,” said Njawala.

He further appealed to the middle class, executives, and those with influence to encourage their relatives and communities to vote for Kabambe.

“On 16th September, wake up early, go and cast your vote. Do not wait until the last minute. Every single vote matters. Malawi needs rescuing, and UTM is ready.Kabambe is ready. But above all, we need you, the people of Malawi. We were not part of the mess, but we are ready to be part of the solution. With your vote, together, we will win,” he concluded.

Malawi is expected to have tripartite elections next Tuesday, September 16 ,2025.

The Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) has dismissed reports suggesting that its members are planning to meet former president and Democratic Progressive Party (DPP ) leader Peter Mutharika to apologise for leading nationwide protests after the disputed 2019 presidential elections.

In a statement, HRDC chairperson Gift Trapence describes the reports as ‘outright falsehoods deliberately crafted to mislead Malawians ahead of the polls.’

Trapence

“There is high-level propaganda from the DPP aimed at rewriting history. HRDC has nothing to apologise to Mutharika,” says Trapence in the statement.

He adds that attempts had been made to lure some HRDC members into meeting Mutharika, but they had rejected such approaches.

“I am aware that they have been reaching out to some members of HRDC to meet Mutharika, but these members have refused to succumb to their ill motives,” adds Trapence.

Meanwhile,Mutharika, who is seeking a second term on the DPP ticket after losing the 2020 fresh presidential election, has not publicly commented on the matter.
