Zomba City Council appeals for public cooperation in reporting fires

The Zomba City Council is urging the public to report any fires or emergencies promptly after a recent incident in Chinamwali turned violent.

A minibus caught fire after stopping at the Chinamwali market, and although the council’s fire department responded, they were met with hostility.

The council’s spokesperson, Aubrey Moses, explained that the fire department wasn’t late, but the message came late.



“Fires involving oil are different from other fires in their nature, so people should understand this,” Moses said.

Despite the challenges, Moses appealed to the public to report any fires or emergencies immediately.

“We are here to help, and we need your cooperation to respond effectively,” he emphasized.

The incident highlights the importance of understanding and cooperation between the public and emergency responders. By working together, the community can ensure a swift and effective response to emergencies.

CCJP, CRS launch study to combat human trafficking in Mangochi

The Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP) and Catholic Relief Services (CRS) have launched a two-year research study to reduce labor-related human trafficking in Mangochi District.

The study, funded by the United States Department for Trafficking in Persons, aims to decrease trafficking from 43% to 15% in two years.

The initiative targets 152 youths and young adults in seven traditional authorities and will focus on designing effective interventions to combat labor trafficking.



According to Priscilla Kauze, CCJP Monitoring and Evaluation Officer, the study will gather insights from the participants to develop a comprehensive manual with three key components: digital saving and loan groups, working capital, and financial asset.

The goal is to empower youths with financial management skills and provide them with financial support, enabling them to start their own businesses locally and reduce their vulnerability to exploitation.

The study will be conducted in two phases, with the first phase covering four months and involving 12 participants.

The Mangochi District Council has commended the initiative, calling for more innovative solutions to address labor-related trafficking and youth economic empowerment in the district.

The study is expected to yield positive outcomes for the youth in Mangochi.

Speaking at the launch of the Raise the Flag Summit 2025 at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe, Chakwera encouraged citizens to take ownership of their nation’s progress.

“We should have the spirit of loving our nation by playing a role in various sectors as part of dedication and commitment,” Chakwera said.



“We should not only point fingers when someone has done something wrong but take a step in fixing the problem together.”Chakwera added.

The Raise the Flag initiative aims to promote patriotism, innovation, and a strong work ethic among Malawians.

According to Wealth Magazine Managing Executive Harry Chima, the campaign seeks to address challenges such as weak public service, preference for foreign goods, and low self-esteem.

The summit, themed “Redefining Our Culture, Revolutionizing and Accelerating Growth,” targets individuals, the private and public sectors, civil society, and local leaders.

It aims to advance the Agriculture, Technology, and Mining (ATM) strategy while promoting work ethics.

By taking an active role in nation-building, Malawians can contribute to the country’s progress and development.

The Raise the Flag Summit 2025 serves as a platform for citizens to come together and work towards a common goal of building a self-reliant nation.
