Public pensioners forum urges government to reduce retirement age to 50

By Twink Jones Gadama

In a bid to address the challenges faced by young graduates in finding employment, the Public Pensioners Forum (PPF) is calling on the government to reduce the mandatory retirement age for civil servants from 60 to 50 years. This move, according to the forum, would not only create job opportunities for young people but also allow retirees to enjoy their pensions while still capable of pursuing personal goals.

Speaking on behalf of the forum, Board Chairperson Dyson Mutipe emphasized the struggles faced by young graduates in securing employment. “It’s alarming to see young graduates struggling to find jobs, while older civil servants continue to occupy positions that could be filled by younger, more energetic individuals,” Mutipe said.

Mutipe also highlighted the persistent hardships faced by retirees over the years, accusing the government of neglecting its obligation to safeguard their welfare. “Retirees have been facing numerous challenges, including delayed pension payments, inadequate healthcare, and lack of support for their post-retirement endeavors,” Mutipe added.

The PPF’s call for a reduced retirement age is not without precedent. In some countries, the retirement age has been lowered to address similar challenges. For instance, in France, the retirement age was lowered from 65 to 60 in 2010 to address concerns about the aging workforce and to create job opportunities for younger workers.

While some may argue that reducing the retirement age could lead to a loss of experience and expertise in the civil service, the PPF counters that this move would actually benefit the government in the long run. “By allowing older civil servants to retire earlier, the government can bring in fresh perspectives and ideas, which can lead to improved productivity and efficiency in the public sector,” Mutipe explained.

The PPF’s proposal has sparked a heated debate among stakeholders, with some arguing that the move would be too costly for the government, while others see it as a necessary step to address the challenges faced by young graduates and retirees.

As the debate continues, one thing is clear: the PPF’s call for a reduced retirement age has brought attention to the need for innovative solutions to address the challenges faced by both young graduates and retirees. Whether or not the government will heed the PPF’s call remains to be seen, but one thing is certain – the conversation has begun, and it’s time for stakeholders to come together to find solutions that benefit all parties involved.

In related news, the Himachal Pradesh government has been working to address the grievances of its pensioners, including the payment of arrears and the revision of pension rates.

The government’s efforts to address these concerns are a step in the right direction, but more needs to be done to ensure that retirees are able to live dignified lives after years of service to the nation.

maGovernment has said the 2025/2026 budget will utilise revenue from taxes and other revenues and not rely on borrowing from donors to develop the country.

Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs Simplex Chithyola said this on Monday during the opening of the first 2025/26 pre-budget consultation meeting in Lilongwe.

Chithyola

He said government wants to formulate a “people-friendly budget” focusing on key areas for sustainable economic growth.

“This meeting is critical and of utmost importance as it provides us with the opportunity to gather and solicit views on the formulation of the 2025/26 National Budget from a diverse range of stakeholders”, said Chithyola.

Chithyola stated that government is still in discussion with the International Monetary Fund to consider supporting Malawi with the Extended Credit Facility (ECF).

Representing the Secretary to the Treasury and Principal Secretary for Administration in the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs, Heatherwick Njati, stressed the importance of collaboration in crafting a transformative budget.

“The budget is a tool for economic transformation. Its success depends on proper planning, programming and implementation,” he said.

He therefore urged participants including professional bodies, civil society and faith-based organisations to contribute solutions to challenges that could hinder the budget’s success.

By Burnett Munthali

Today, at Ulongwe Trading Centre in the heart of the Southern Region of Malawi, a fervent crowd of United Democratic Front (UDF) supporters gathered to hear from their party leader, Rt. Hon. Atupele Muluzi. The lively and spirited event marked another stop on his ongoing whistle-stop tour across the country, aimed at strengthening the UDF’s grassroots presence ahead of the 2025 general elections.

As the crowd cheered and waved their party’s flags, Muluzi took the stage with his usual charisma, addressing an audience that was clearly invested in the political future of Malawi. His speech focused on urging citizens to participate in the upcoming voter registration process, which is a critical step towards ensuring a fair and democratic election.

The message was clear: the power to shape Malawi’s future lies in the hands of its people, and by registering to vote, they can ensure that their voices are heard. Muluzi’s call to action was not just about political engagement—it was a call for unity and empowerment for the people of Malawi, especially those in rural areas who have often felt disconnected from the political process.

“Now, more than ever, your participation is crucial. It is time to make our voices heard. We cannot afford to sit on the sidelines while the future of our country is being decided. I encourage every Malawian to go out and register to vote. This is our time to take charge of our future,” said Muluzi, as the crowd responded with thunderous applause.

The turnout in Ulongwe was impressive, with people from all walks of life showing up to hear their leader speak. Local farmers, business owners, youth, and women were all represented, signaling the broad appeal of Muluzi’s message. This diversity in the crowd reinforced the UDF’s strategy of fostering an inclusive political environment where every citizen feels represented and valued.

Muluzi’s message also touched on the importance of good governance, development, and ensuring that Malawi’s political future is one where all citizens can thrive. His party’s platform, centered on economic empowerment, infrastructure development, and job creation, resonated strongly with the audience.

One key element of Muluzi’s speech was a focus on the younger generation. Recognizing the importance of youth engagement in politics, he emphasized that they hold the power to lead Malawi into the future. “The youth are the backbone of this country. You are the ones who will shape the destiny of Malawi. That is why it is important for you to get involved, to register to vote, and to participate in the elections. Your future depends on the choices you make today.”

In addition to his political message, Muluzi’s rally in Ulongwe featured lively entertainment, with local performers showcasing their talents and creating a festive atmosphere. Music, dancing, and laughter filled the air as UDF supporters expressed their excitement for the upcoming elections.

As the rally progressed, Muluzi acknowledged the challenges that the people of Ulongwe face, from economic hardships to inadequate infrastructure. He pledged to work with local leaders and communities to address these issues, reinforcing his commitment to creating a Malawi where every citizen has the opportunity to succeed.

As the event drew to a close, Muluzi took time to thank the people of Ulongwe for their continued support, emphasizing that their collective action in the upcoming elections would determine the country’s political landscape. “Together, we will create the Malawi we all want—one that is prosperous, peaceful, and filled with opportunities for everyone.”

The Ulongwe rally was a pivotal moment in Muluzi’s whistle-stop tour, offering a glimpse into the energy and enthusiasm that he and the UDF are generating across the country. With the 2025 elections on the horizon, it’s clear that Muluzi is not only focused on political victories but also on engaging the people and building a movement that is rooted in the values of democracy, transparency, and good governance.

For the people of Ulongwe, this was more than just a rally—it was a reminder that their voices matter, their participation counts, and that change is possible when they stand together as one. As the crowd dispersed, many left with a renewed sense of hope, knowing that they have the power to shape Malawi’s future, one vote at a time.
