Horror at Mikuyu: Torture, starvation, and secret burials exposed by MHRC

A chilling new report by the state-funded Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has revealed horrific conditions at Mikuyu Prison in Zomba, painting a grim picture of torture, starvation, and death.

According to the MHRC findings, at least ten inmates have died at the facility due to extreme physical torture.

One of the most shocking revelations in the report is that some inmates had their private parts burned as part of the torture they endured.

These inmates, after succumbing to the abuse, were allegedly buried in secret on nearby farms, without the knowledge or consent of their families.

The report further indicates that an estimated one hundred more inmates are on the brink of death due to starvation.

Food shortages have reached such a critical level that hunger itself is already killing inmates inside the prison.

Mikuyu Prison, once notorious as a torture and death chamber during the one-party dictatorship era, appears to be relapsing into its dark past.

The findings by MHRC have raised serious questions about human rights violations within Malawi’s correctional system.

Concerns are now growing that the prison system is being neglected to the point of systemic cruelty.

Human rights advocates have begun to call for immediate action from the government and justice authorities to investigate the deaths and prosecute those responsible.

The revelations are also expected to reignite national and international attention on the state of Malawi’s prisons, particularly their alignment with constitutional and human rights obligations.

The MHRC has urged authorities to act swiftly to save the lives of those still suffering at Mikuyu and to ensure that prisons uphold human dignity.

Couple in Pemba hospitalized after violent domestic fight, both face criminal charges

By Burnett Munthali

A disturbing incident has unfolded in Pemba District, Southern Province, where a married couple from Moyo Chiefdom physically assaulted each other following a heated domestic dispute.

The individuals involved have been identified as 54-year-old Charles Muchindu, a Chief’s Retainer, and his 45-year-old wife, Kasamba Chitombwe.

The violent altercation occurred in the early hours of 6th August 2025, around 02:00 hours, in Mukombo village.

According to reports, the conflict erupted after the wife allegedly exchanged their household oxen for cows with other farmers in the area without her husband’s consent.

This exchange sparked a major disagreement, which quickly escalated into a physical fight.

During the scuffle, the wife sustained serious injuries including a swollen face and puffiness around both eyes, which left her temporarily unable to see.

Additionally, her right middle finger was partially severed after her husband bit it during the confrontation.

In retaliation, Kasamba Chitombwe struck her husband, Charles Muchindu, on the right toe with an axe, causing the toe to partially detach and hang loosely by the skin.

She also bit his lower lip, leaving it partially cut and bleeding.

Following the incident, both individuals reported each other to the police, and they were initially taken to Pemba Mini Hospital for treatment.

They have since been referred to Monze Mission Hospital, where they are both currently admitted.

Southern Province Commissioner of Police, Auxensio Daka, confirmed that the couple is in stable condition.

Commissioner Daka further stated that both Muchindu and Chitombwe will be charged with Causing Grievous Harm, contrary to Section 229 of the Penal Code, Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.

The case has drawn public attention due to the intensity of the violence and the fact that both parties are facing legal consequences.

Chakwera

During his address, President Chakwera emphasized the role of institutions like the National Economic Empowerment Fund (NEEF), which are currently offering business loans aimed at supporting the youth in achieving financial independence through sustainable enterprises.

The President further unveiled his administration’s long-term plan to transform NEEF into an investment bank, a move he believes will empower even more Malawians economically.

He also outlined his vision for enhancing the mining sector in Malawi, stating that developing this industry could significantly increase government revenue and ultimately improve the lives of ordinary citizens.

In addition, Chakwera highlighted his government’s ongoing efforts to improve access to clean water, particularly in schools and health facilities, as part of a broader push for social development.

Earlier at the same event, Senior Chief Katumbi expressed gratitude to the President for elevating traditional leaders and improving their welfare, noting that these efforts have positively impacted rural communities.

As part of his tour, President Chakwera is also expected to make whistle-stop visits at Mwazisi, Bolero, Rumphi Boma, and Mhuju, where he will continue engaging with citizens and promoting his development agenda.

President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has officially commissioned the Nyika-Vwaza Water Project, a milestone development expected to supply clean water to at least 18,000 people in Rumphi and parts of Mzimba.

The commissioning ceremony took place at Thazima, where the President described the project as vital for the sustenance of human life in the region.

“I am very grateful to all partners, especially the Government of Germany, who have supported this project. Water is life, and this project will sustain life in the areas of Paramount Chief Chikulamayembe, Katumbi, and Mpherembe,” said President Chakwera.

He further urged the local communities to take great care of the water infrastructure to ensure continued access and long-term benefits.

The German Ambassador to Malawi, Ute König, emphasized that the water project is set to reduce long-standing challenges faced by communities in accessing safe and clean water.

“Communities have been struggling to access clean and portable water. People had to walk long distances, and at times they risked encountering dangerous wild animals just to fetch water,” said König.

Minister of Tourism, Vera Kamtukule, commended the initiative, expressing joy that communities were now directly benefiting from nature conservation efforts.

She added that the government remains committed to promoting conservation programs that are inclusive and considerate of community needs.

Paramount Chief Chikulamayembe hailed the project as a transformative gift to the people of Rumphi and Mzimba.

“This is like a dream come true. I am very grateful that the project has finally been completed, and people will now have access to clean water,” said the traditional leader.

The project was funded by the Republic of Germany through the KFW Development Bank and cost approximately MWK 10 billion.

The Nyika-Vwaza Water Project is expected to bring immense health, economic, and social benefits to the target areas, while also strengthening the relationship between Malawi and its development partners.
