Parly committee begins investigation into Justice Manda’s alleged misconduct

The Legal Affairs Committee of Parliament(LACP) says it has started its investigation into alleged  corruption practices by Justice Ken Manda.

On Friday afternoon, the committee held a closed-door meeting with the Malawi Law Society(MLS) in Lilongwe.

According to committee chairperson Peter Dimba, the committee is examining both current allegations against the judge and previous issues, including a judgment Judge Manda delivered on the sale of Gamu Filling Station in Lilongwe, which caused an uproar in Parliament.

He said the committee also plans to meet with the Judicial Service Commission(JSC) next Friday,saying it has  constitutional duty to discipline errant judicial officers.

Renowned lawyer Alexious Kamangila is the one who has been mentioning Manda’s name through his Facebook page that he is among top corrupt judicial officers and has to be investigated.

Govt dismisses election rigging claims

Minister of Information and Digitalisation who is also government spokesperson,Moses Kunkuyu, has dismissed claims made by the opposition parties,Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) and United Transformation Movement (UTM) that the government plans to rig the 2025 elections by awarding contracts to foreign companies and procuring electoral devices in a suspicious manner.

Speaking during a press briefing in Blantyre on Friday, Kunkuyu described the opposition’s concerns as baseless and expressed surprise that they are questioning the electoral procedures and laws passed by legislators.

The minister also defended the appointment of Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Chairperson Justice Anabel Mtalimanja, emphasizing that it followed a transparent and legally accepted procedure.

“One would doubt whether the opposition has taken the new way of thinking,” Kunkuyu said.

On the opposition party’s intentions to hold national wide demonstrations, Kunkuyu said it was unfortunate.

“Dialogue remains a preferable approach. Dialogue is necessary to avoid unnecessary confrontation and chaos,” he said while acknowledging that everyone has right to express feelings

The minister then encouraged eligible Malawians to register for the 2025 general elections and emphasized the importance of dialogue over demonstrations.

Chakwera hails India for bilateral relationship existing between the two countries

Malawi leader His president Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera,  has hailed the cordial bilateral relationship that exists between the governments of Malawi and the People’s Republic of India.

President Chakwera made the remarks on Friday at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe during a meeting with the visiting Indian President Her Excellency Smt. Droupadi Murmu.

Updating the media after the meeting, Minister of Foreign Affairs Nancy Tembo said President Chakwera thanked the Indian Government for it’s unwavering social and economic support to the people of Malawi.

Tembo explained that the Malawi leader also thanked the Government of India for it’s continuous assistance to Malawi in the areas of trade, health, education, military peace keeping collaboration as well as the recent humanitarian support.

“Our President was happy that the Indian President chose Malawi as one of the countries to visit. The president also acknowledged support that we get from India on the global stage in multilateral organizations where India speaks for the least developed countries to ensure that they are getting a fair deal on the global stage,” she emphasized.

The Indian President is on a three day official visit to Malawi. Earlier in the day, Murmu, visited the National Memorial Park in Area 18 and Kamuzu Mausoleum Lilongwe,  as part of her three-day official visit to Malawi.

The visit to these sites aligns with her agenda to explore sites of cultural and historical significance in the country.

Mpinganjira urges procurement specialists to streamline services

Business mogul Thomson Mpinganjira has urged procurement specialists in the country  to become more efficient in their service delivery as a way of saving money for their institutions.

Mpinganjira made the remarks in Mangochi on Wednesday evening when he officially opened this year’s Malawi Institute of Procurement and Supply (MIPS) annual conference.

He observed that about 70 percent of the total government’s budget is spent through procurement, hence the need to tighten service delivery in the sector.

“Efficiency in procurement would save alot of money which can be channelled towards investment, hence grow our economy.

“With proper service delivery, government or any organisation can save about 20 percent or more of their money,” said Mpinganjira.

In her remarks,MIPS president Miriam Jere warned that the association would not tolerate any members who would be found guilty of acts that are prohibited by the procurement act.

Jere revealed that in the past two years, MIPS has disciplined and reported to authorities about five members who were found guilty of misprocurement.

“We also have some cases which are under investigation at the moment,” she said.

Theme for this year’s conference is, optimising procurement and supply chain management in Malawi; strategies for enhancing productivity and export competitiveness.

Husband,wife arrested for stealing baby in Lilongwe

Police at Area 3 in Lilongwe are keeping in custody a man identified as Wyson Misoya, 32,and his wife, Gloria Misoya, 32,for stealing a two-day-old baby girl at Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) on Monday.

It is said that since marrying each other in 2022, the husband was pressuring the wife to bear him a child, against the fact that the woman took a permanent procedure to prevent pregnancy (female sterilization).

The situation prompted the wife to fake pregnancy.


The husband took his wife to Bwaila District Hospital purportedly to give birth.

This was being done despite the husband knowing that the pregnancy was fake, as their plan was to steal a child at any of the hospitals in the city.

After failing to steal one at Bwaila Hospital, the couple left for KCH on Monday, where the wife met and started chatting with a certain granny who was carrying a newborn baby for her granddaughter at the hospital’s kitchen.

The woman suspect then requested the granny to help babysit the child, before disappearing after telling the granny that she was temporarily leaving the place to buy mangoes.

However, a day after getting home with the baby, the suspects were reported to police by their landlady and other experienced women after becoming suspicious with them.

Meanwhile, the baby girl has been reunited with her mother after being declared to be medically well by KCH.

The suspects, who have two children each from their previous marriages, will appear in court soon to answer a case of Theft of a Child.

Wyson Misoya hails from Mwabvi Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Nsabwe, Thyolo, while Gloria Misoya is from Denyama Village, T/A Ntchema in Chiradzulu District.
