Msaka and Makanjira challenge Machinga Likwenu election results in court

The Vice President of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) for the Eastern Region, Bright Msaka, and independent candidate MacDonald Makanjira have taken their electoral grievances to court, seeking a review of the parliamentary election results for the Machinga Likwenu constituency.

According to documents submitted before the court, the two politicians argue that the September 16, 2025 election was not conducted in a free and fair manner.

They allege that their rival, Tulinje Muluzi, who contested on a United Democratic Front (UDF) ticket, continued to campaign and mobilize voters even after the official campaign period had closed.

Muluzi

Msaka and Makanjira further claim that the election process was marred by several irregularities, including the presence of pre-marked ballot papers that compromised the credibility of the vote.

They also allege that some election monitors were denied the opportunity to verify ballot papers before counting, a development they believe affected the transparency of the electoral process.

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) had earlier declared Tulinje Muluzi the winner of the parliamentary seat, defeating six other candidates who contested in the Machinga Likwenu constituency race.

However, the petitioners argue that the results announced by MEC did not reflect the true will of the people of Machinga Likwenu and are therefore seeking judicial intervention to review or nullify the outcome.

Political observers say the case will be closely watched, as it may set a precedent for how electoral disputes are handled in Malawi’s emerging democracy.

Meanwhile, the court is expected to set a date for the hearing, during which both the Malawi Electoral Commission and Tulinje Muluzi will be required to respond to the allegations.

The outcome of the case could have significant implications for electoral integrity and public confidence in future elections in Malawi.

LILONGWE – The Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has stated that it does not believe some government workers vandalized various items at the state-owned Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe.

The party’s spokesperson, Jessie Kabwila, claimed that the goal of those spreading this story is to tarnish the reputation of the party and its leader, Lazarus Chakwera.

Kabwila suggested that the government wants to use this story as a pretext for senior officials to access funds by claiming they are repairing the alleged damaged property at Kamuzu Palace.

The party also expressed skepticism about the images some people are posting on social media platforms, claiming they show the damaged property. They stated that these pictures are actually of residences from other countries, while others have been digitally altered.

Recently, government officials claimed that workers at the Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe vandalized various items during the recent transition of power.

Prominent social commentator and musician Kondwan Kachamba has called on the new Government of the Republic of Malawi and the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) to take urgent action against what he describes as a “moral crisis” engulfing the nation’s creative industry.

In a strongly worded statement released on Wednesday, Kachamba expressed deep concern over the growing trend of young people producing and circulating sexually explicit videos on social media, allegedly in pursuit of fame, likes and online followers.

“There is a spirit of foolishness that has entered our music industry.Young men and women are deliberately filming and sharing indecent videos just to trend. This is satanic and dangerous for our society,”said Kachamba in a statement.

Kachamba urged government authorities to treat the matter with seriousness, warning that the unchecked spread of such content could erode Malawi’s moral fabric and negatively influence future generations.

He proposed that Parliament should consider passing new laws to criminalize the creation and distribution of pornographic material and introduce severe penalties for offenders. Kachamba further suggested that those found guilty should be compelled to delete their social media accounts and face industry sanctions.

“COSOMA and other relevant bodies must take part in this.Anyone found guilty should be banned from participating in the entertainment industry for several years. We must not allow companies to sign or promote such individuals doing so only fuels immorality,”he emphasized.

Kachamba also urged law enforcement agencies to strengthen online monitoring and ensure swift arrests of those producing and sharing indecent material.

He said government should demonstrate moral leadership by enforcing discipline in the creative sector.

“Malawi is not a country for producing pornographic videos. This is not democracy it is moral decay. The government must use its full power to restore sanity among the youth,” he said.

He warned that continued exposure to obscene material could normalize immorality, influencing young people to view such acts as acceptable forms of expression.

Kachamba vowed to personally advocate for the establishment of clear policies and stiffer penalties against pornography and immoral content online.
