Undule applauds President Chakwera’s National address

Good governance and Human Rights Advocate Undule Mwakasungula applauds President Lazarus Chakwera’s National address saying it offers a comprehensive update on pressing national issues.

In a press statement, Mwakasungula said Chakwera’s reaction to the food crisis affecting over 5.7 million Malawians and highlighting steps taken to distribute maize across the country, demonstrates transparency that builds trust as the government is committed to address hunger.

“The address emphasized the government’s collaboration with international partners to tackle the crisis. Acknowledging the notable donations from countries like the US, UK, Sweden and Japan shows the importance of global solidarity in emergencies, this calls for continued accountability in utilizing these resources,” he said.

He adds by saying that the promising developments of government to government fuel arrangements with United Arab Emirates reflects administration’s efforts to find sustainable solutions.

Mwakasungula also commends the revised budget measures to address fiscal disciplines as the President has ordered the removal of Value Added Tax (VAT) for government officials on vehicle imports saying this move signals a committiment to prioritize citizens over personal or institution privileges.

“On job creation, infrastructure development, and investment in key sectors like agriculture, tourism and mining, the President reaffirmed the administration’s strategic priorities. Notably, the emphasis on exporting labour to foreign markets like Israel and the UAE shows innovative thinking but requires careful planning to protect worker’s rights abroad,” the statement further said.

On the appointment of Engineer Vitumbiko Mumba as the new Minister of Labour, Mwakasungula highlighted President Chakwera’s trust in young promising Malawians like Engineer Mumba.

Mwakasungula also hailed the Malawi leader for appreciating citizens who registered for upcoming elections, saying this encouragement promotes civic responsibility and enhances trust in democratic processes.

He has therefore highlighted the Chakwera’s national address as a clear demonstration of his committiment to the well being of Malawians.

Engineer Mumba is the new Minster of Labour

President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has appointed Engineer Vitumbiko Mumba as the new Minister of Labour with immediate effect.

The announcement was made during a presidential address held Wednesday evening at Mzuzu State Lodge, where he addressed several issues of national importance.

Chakwera commends development partners for unwavering support to ensure food security

President Dr Lazarus Chakwera has expressed appreciation to local organisations and development partners, for their unwavering support and dedication in ensuring food availability to Malawians during this period of food security crisis.

Speaking during a presidential address held Wednesday evening at Mzuzu State Lodge, the President stressed the importance of seeking international support to address the humanitarian crisis the country is currently grappling with.

President Chakwera recognised significant contributions that Malawi has received from various development partners through the World Food Programme (WFP).

He said  WFP will publicly disclose the details of how and where the aid has been distributed.

He pointed out that Malawi has received substantial financial support from governments around the world through the World Food Program (WFP), including 11.8 million dollars from Sweden and the Netherlands, 7 million dollars from the United States, 3.8 million dollars from the United Kingdom, 1.9 million dollars from Japan, 1.6 million dollars from France, 1.5 million dollars from South Korea, and 1.07 million dollars from Germany.

Additionally, Norway and Iceland contributed 950,000 dollars, Denmark provided 750,000 dollars, Ireland donated 556,000 dollars, Switzerland contributed 500,000 dollars, and the African Development Bank donated 1 million dollars.

The President specifically commended partners such as Good Neighbors Malawi, Nkhoma Synod, Emerging Donor March Fund, Save the Children, United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), BHA, FAO, Mary’s Meals, USAID, JBJ Foundation, ISRAID, and Caritas partners for their steadfast support.

He urged the partners to continue their efforts in mobilising support for Malawi from across the globe to alleviate the lives of Malawians.

Fuel and Forex Solutions a priority for Chakwera’s administration

President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has said the government is working tirelessly to find long-term solutions for the forex and fuel crisis which the country has been experiencing for a long period.

Speaking during a national address on Wednesday at Mzuzu State Lodge, Chakwera said Malawians need to exercise discipline on the available resources.

“We are working with international partners like the World Bank, The African Development Bank, International Monetary Fund to make sure that we have adequate resources like food, fertilizer, forex and fuel,” said Chakwera.

The President further said recently he met the President of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and his officials about setting up a Government-to-Government arrangement for a more sustainable supply of fuel in the country.

President Chakwera added that he directed the Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs to present a revised budget in parliament which has a number of economic policies intended to reduce the government’s budget deficit.

“These measures include the removal of VAT exemptions for importing vehicles from myself, the Vice President, all Ministers, all Members of Parliament, all senior members of the Executive, the Judiciary and the Military,” he said.

The President emphasised the need to improve the welfare of Malawians by making sure there is enough food and fertilizer to end hunger.

Chakwera assures Malawians of addressing Challenges hindering progress of th country

President Dr Lazarus Chakwera says his government is working round the clock to address challenges that are hindering the progress of the country.

He made the call Wednesday evening, during a national address where he tacked several issues.

The President said it is not a secret that Malawi has a crisis of food, fertilizer, fuel and forex, but said his government with support from partners is doing everything possible to deal with such challenges.

“In the meantime, let us exercise discipline in the way we can use resources. What is most important is to use the resources wisely.

“My priority in all public spending is improving people’s welfare by procuring enough food and fertilizer to end hunger and providing supplies.

“To achieve all this, I directed the minister of finance to present a revised budget to parliament which has many austerity measures for cutting non-essential expenditure and generating revenue,” he said

President Chakwera then commended institutions like the International Monetary Fund, World Bank, Africa Development Bank, United States of America, United Kingdom, Germany, and European Union among others for working with the government of Malawi to find long-term solutions for the fuel and forex crisis.

The President added that the United Arab Emirates is geared to assist Malawi, end its crisis, hence His Royal Highness Sheikh Mohamed Biz Zayed Al Nahyan is sending a delegation to Malawi to finalise deals following President Chakwera’s visit to the UAE last week.

He said the coming in of the officials will set up a government-to-government arrangement for a more sustainable supply of fuel, the legislation for which was already passed by Parliament last week.
