Dar es Salaam, Tanzania – The former Speaker of Malawi’s Parliament, Richard Msowoya, has touched down in Dar es Salaam to assume his duties as the head of the Southern African Development Community Electoral Observation Mission for Tanzania’s upcoming general election.

Msowoya will provide overall leadership and coordination for the mission and act as its chief representative throughout the observation of the electoral process scheduled for October 29. His appointment to this critical role was made by President Arthur Peter Mutharika of Malawi, who currently serves as the Chairperson of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation.

The mission comprises the SADC Electoral Advisory Council and teams of observers dispatched from multiple SADC member states. These nations include Botswana, the Kingdom of Eswatini, the Kingdom of Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. Officials from the SADC Secretariat are also part of the delegation.

The observers are currently engaged in a refresher training program on electoral processes, which runs from October 16 to 19 in Dar es Salaam. Msowoya’s arrival sets the stage for the official launch of the observation mission on October 21.

The entire deployment is conducted in line with the SADC Principles and Guidelines Governing Democratic Elections. A preliminary statement from the observation mission detailing its initial findings is expected to be released on October 31, following the conclusion of voting.

Malawi unveils First-Ever Pre-Primary Curriculum  , a Milestone for Early Learning

By Alfred Chauwa

The Malawi Institute of Education (MIE), with guidance from the Ministry of Education, has achieved a historic milestone by developing the country’s first-ever curriculum and assessment framework for the Pre-Primary Class (P-Class).

The framework, recently approved by the Government, marks a transformative step towards strengthening early childhood education and ensuring that every Malawian child begins school with the foundational skills necessary for lifelong learning.

For the first time, children entering formal education will be equipped with the pre-literacy, numeracy, and social-emotional skills needed to succeed in Standard 1.

This development addresses long-standing gaps in school readiness that have contributed to poor early-grade performance and high repetition rates.

Building on this milestone, MIE has developed  Teacher’s Guides and Learner’s Books for the P-Class.

These materials are currently under expert review to ensure quality, relevance, and alignment with Malawi’s national education goals.

In an exclusive interview,  MIE Executive Director Dr Frank Mtemang’ombe said with support from the Ministry of Education and education development partners, the Institute plans to field-test these materials and orient teachers to the new framework within the current financial year before April 2026.

The field-testing phase will help validate the materials’ effectiveness in real classroom settings before nationwide rollout.

“This curriculum gives every Malawian child a fair start. It sets the foundation for literacy, numeracy, and creativity in a way that connects to our national vision for inclusive, quality education,” said Dr. Frank Mtemang’ombe.

This milestone according to the ED underscores MIE’s leadership in education reform and its commitment to ensuring that Malawi’s 5yrs old learners have access to relevant, evidence-based, and culturally grounded education from the start.

Newly appointed Malawi Defence Force (MDF) Commander, General George Jaffu, has pledged to make the welfare of soldiers a top priority during his tenure, emphasising the need for improved accommodation and modern military equipment.

Jaffu made the commitment following his official appointment and promotion during a ceremony held at President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika’s Page House residence in Mangochi on Friday.

He said the MDF’s continued success depends on motivated personnel who are well-equipped to meet the demands of modern security challenges.

“My key focus will be on promoting the welfare of our men and women in uniform. This includes providing decent accommodation and ensuring that our troops are equipped with modern tools necessary to effectively carry out their duties,” said Jaffu.

In his remarks, Mutharika, who officiated the ceremony, described Jaffu as a seasoned and distinguished military professional whose leadership will further strengthen Malawi’s national security and stability.

“I have followed his career closely. His appointment is a testament to his exceptional leadership and dedication to the values of the Malawi Defence Force,” said Mutharika.

Before his elevation to the top post, Jaffu served as Deputy Commander of the Defence Force since May 2024.

He holds a Master’s Degree in Strategic Management from the University of Derby in the United Kingdom and has completed several specialised military training programmes, including joint operations planning and United Nations military observer training.

The UTM Party has with immediate effect dissolved its Presidential Advisory Council, an announcement that came shortly after the party’s founder, Newton Kambala, resigned from his role as a presidential advisor.

In his resignation letter, Kambala stated that the council had failed to provide effective strategic guidance to the party president, Dalitso Kabambe, ahead of the September 2025 polls. The decision to dissolve the entire council was confirmed by the party’s secretary general, Patricia Kaliati.

The move follows a worse-than-expected performance for UTM in the recent elections. The party’s presidential candidate, Dalitso Kabambe, polled around 200,000 votes, a figure that falls far short of the nearly one million votes secured by the party’s former running mate, Saulos Chilima, in the 2019 presidential election.

In a statement, Kaliati said the dissolution by president Kabambe takes effect immediately and is part of efforts to improve efficiency and strengthen the party’s organisational structure. “Your service has laid a foundation that we shall continue to build upon, and your contributions will not be forgotten as we explore new structures and strategies to advance our mission,” Kaliati said.
