She emphasized that the event aims to mobilize various stakeholders at all levels to take transformative actions that accelerate progress towards gender equality and sustainable development in the country.

The Minister further indicated that the day will feature a series of activities aimed at supporting and empowering women.

One of the key activities will be a visit to Kamuzu Central Hospital Maternity Ward in Lilongwe on 5th March 2025, where women will be supported with various gifts.

She also announced that a breakfast meeting, a business expo, and a small and medium entrepreneurs session will take place at Amaryllis Hotel in Blantyre on 7th March 2025.

These events are aimed at mentoring women in business and equipping them with knowledge and opportunities to enhance their entrepreneurial ventures.

This year’s International Women’s Day will be commemorated under the theme: “All Women and Girls’ Rights, Equality, and Empowerment.”

The theme emphasizes the importance of creating a fair and inclusive world where all women and girls have equal access to leadership and decision-making spaces.

The commemoration serves as a platform to reflect on progress made towards gender equality and to call for continued efforts in addressing challenges that hinder women’s empowerment in Malawi.

As Malawi joins the rest of the world in celebrating this important day, the government and stakeholders are expected to reaffirm their commitment to promoting gender equity and enhancing the role of women in national development.

In a stunning turn of events, Councillor Esther Amina Sagawa, the Mayor of Lilongwe City Council, has unofficially won the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) primary elections in the newly established Lilongwe City Chipala-Nafisi constituency.

This unexpected victory marks a significant milestone in her political career, particularly as it positions her as a leading candidate for the upcoming general elections.

Sagawa triumphed over three opponents, including MCP National Director of Political Affairs Hon. Maxwell Thyolera.

Her victory over such a high-profile figure in the party is seen as a testament to her political strength and growing popularity within the constituency.

Sagawa’s success in the primary elections highlights her ability to resonate with the voters and the trust they have in her leadership.

This win has undoubtedly solidified her position as a strong contender ahead of the general elections, where she will now represent MCP as a candidate in the Chipala-Nafisi constituency.

The political landscape in Lilongwe City has been shifting in recent months, with various individuals vying for influence and power in the upcoming elections.

Sagawa’s victory is seen as a significant blow to her opponents, particularly Maxwell Thyolera, whose defeat has raised questions about the internal dynamics within the MCP.

For Sagawa, the win also underscores her ability to navigate the complexities of party politics and emerge victorious, even in the face of stiff competition from senior figures within her own party.

As the general elections approach, all eyes will now be on Sagawa as she prepares to take on her next challenge: securing the seat in Chipala-Nafisi and, by extension, a place in the national government.

Her rise in the political arena has been swift and, with this recent victory, it seems clear that Councillor Esther Amina Sagawa is a force to be reckoned with in the upcoming elections.

Six-year-old Ella shoots and kills American police officer in defense of her Mother

By Twink Jones Gadama

A six-year-old girl, Ella, fatally shot a 28-year-old American police officer last month after witnessing her mother being restrained by law enforcement.

The incident occurred when Ella’s mother left her inside the car and went into a supermarket to purchase a 75-inch television..

After completing her purchase, she was stopped at the store’s exit and asked to present her receipt, as per store policy. However, she couldn’t find it despite searching everywhere.

She then returned to the cashier who had issued the receipt and asked him to explain to security that she had genuinely bought the television.

The cashier confirmed her claim, but a security guard insisted that she must present the receipt before leaving.

Frustrated, the woman attempted to leave but was confronted by the security officer and two police officers, who ordered her not to load the television into her car.

She tried to explain the situation, but the officers refused to listen.

They forcefully pushed her to the ground, restraining her while she cried out that she couldn’t breathe and insisted that she was not a thief.

At that moment, Ella, still inside the car, saw her mother struggling and gasping for air.

Fearing for her mother’s life, she searched for her mother’s gun, found it, and stepped out of the car. She pointed the weapon at one of the officers and warned him to release her mother, or she would shoot.

The officer, seemingly underestimating the child, ignored her warning and continued restraining her mother. In response, Ella fired multiple shots at his face, killing him instantly.

She then dropped the gun, raised her hands in surrender, and stood still as her mother regained consciousness.

The second officer, a female, immediately arrested both Ella and her mother and called for backup. They were taken into custody.

After an investigation, police reviewed CCTV footage from the supermarket, which confirmed that the woman had indeed purchased the television.

The missing receipt was later found on the store floor.

Surveillance footage also showed the officers restraining the woman while her daughter watched in distress, believing her mother was being killed. It also captured Ella warning the officer before pulling the trigger.

Ella and her mother were granted bail and taken to court.

During the trial, the judge ruled that Ella acted in defense of her mother and was not criminally responsible for the shooting.

The court determined that, at six years old, she likely could not distinguish between police officers and criminals, especially given her mother’s desperate cries for help.

The judge also criticized the officers for their unprofessional handling of the situation, stating that they should have checked the supermarket’s CCTV footage before taking extreme measures.

The case was swiftly dismissed, and both Ella and her mother were set free.

Concerns raised over deteriorating seats at Bingu Stadium

Reports indicate that the seats at Bingu Stadium, the national sports arena, have started to show signs of wear and tear.

These are some of the concerns raised by a few members of the public who have observed the deterioration.

The once pristine and comfortable seating has now become visibly damaged, affecting the overall appearance of the stadium.

This issue has sparked conversations among sports fans and event attendees, many of whom expect a higher standard of maintenance.

The wear and tear are particularly noticeable in the main seating areas, where some chairs have been ripped or discolored.

As one of Malawi’s premier sports facilities, Bingu Stadium has been a venue for numerous high-profile events, both national and international.

Therefore, the condition of the stadium’s seating is raising questions about the stadium’s maintenance practices and the allocation of resources.

While the stadium still serves its purpose, the visible signs of wear could undermine the experience of spectators and athletes alike.

Many people are now urging the authorities responsible for the upkeep of the stadium to take swift action to address the situation.

There are calls for regular inspections and repairs to ensure that the stadium remains in good condition for future events.

This situation highlights the importance of consistent maintenance of national sports infrastructure to preserve their value and functionality.

At this stage, it remains to be seen how the relevant authorities will respond to the growing concerns regarding the state of the stadium’s seating.

Village headman arrested for stealing chicken in Balaka

In a bizarre incident, a group village headman was arrested on Tuesday morning for allegedly stealing a chicken.

The incident occurred in Balaka district, where angry villagers assaulted the headman, identified as Kandengwe, before police intervened and took him into custody.

According to eyewitnesses, the villagers had been searching for the missing chicken when they spotted Kandengwe with the bird in his possession.

The villagers, enraged by the headman’s alleged actions, attacked him, forcing police to intervene and rescue him.

“We were looking for the chicken everywhere, and then we saw the village headman with it,” said one of the villagers, who wished to remain anonymous. “We were angry, and we attacked him. But the police came and took him away.”

The police confirmed the incident and said that Kandengwe is being held at Balaka Police Station pending further investigations.

“We received a report that the village headman had stolen a chicken, and when we arrived at the scene, we found him being attacked by the villagers,” said a police officer who was among the team that rescued village headman Kandengwe “We rescued him and took him into custody. He will appear in court once our investigations are complete.”

The incident has raised eyebrows in the community, with many questioning how a village headman could be involved in such a petty crime.

“It’s shocking that a village headman, who is supposed to be a leader and a role model, could be involved in stealing a chicken,” said one resident. “It’s a betrayal of the trust that the community has placed in him.”

The incident has also sparked debate about the role of village headmen in Malawi’s rural communities.

While they are expected to provide leadership and guidance, some have been accused of abusing their power and engaging in corrupt practices.

“This incident highlights the need for greater accountability and transparency in our rural communities,” said a local activist. “Village headmen must be held to high standards, and those who abuse their power must be brought to justice.”

As the investigation into the incident continues, the community remains divided on the issue.

While some have called for Kandengwe to be punished, others have expressed sympathy for him, saying that he may have been driven to desperation by poverty or other factors.

The case is expected to appear in court soon, and it remains to be seen how the judiciary will handle the matter.
