World Bank lauds Chakwera administration for expanding electricity access

World Bank Managing Director, Anna Bjerde, has commended the President Lazarus Chakwera-led government for its efforts in increasing electricity access from 12% to 25% over the last four years.

She made the remarks on Monday during the signing ceremony of a $300 million compact with the World Bank, aimed at supporting Malawi’s goal of achieving universal energy and electricity access by 2030.

Bjerde emphasized the importance of collaboration between the World Bank and the Malawi government in increasing access to electricity, highlighting that many African countries face significant electricity shortages.

In his remarks,President Chakwera reiterated his administration’s commitment to connecting 75% of Malawians to electricity by 2030.

“In the last four years, we have successfully increased electricity access from 12% to 25%, and we recognize the critical role electricity plays in driving economic development,” he said.

The grant is part of the Accelerating Sustainable & Clean Energy Access Transformation (ASCENT) initiative.

President Dr.Lazarus Chakwera says  electricity is the key to unlocking economic and wealth creation opportunities as it helps in agricultural production, mining sector and tourism, among others.

He was speaking on Monday during the signing ceremony of a US$300 million compact with the World Bank, a funding which will support Malawi to achieve universal energy and electricity access by 2030.

Chakwera said for the past years Malawi has faced a lot of setbacks in the energy sector as the country was hit by Cyclones Ana and Gombe, which severely damaged Kapichira Power Plant and plunged one third of the few Malawian homes that were connected to electricity back in the dark.

“When we had problems with our electricity World Bank was the first to come to our aid and work together with us to see the plant restored, which we accomplished in less than one year,” he said.

The President stated that it is the wish of his administration to see 75 percent of Malawians being connected to electricity by 2030.

“In the last four years, we have managed to connect 25 percent of Malawians with electricity from 12 percent as we know that with electricity our country will be developed,” said Chakwera.

On her part,Managing Director for World Bank, Anna Bjerde,  commended the Malawi government for its efforts in increasing electricity access from 12 to 25 percent in the last four years.

She said, with collaboration with the Malawi government they want to see many Malawians having access to electricity as many African countries  lack electricity.

The grant is under the Accelerating Sustainable & Clean Energy Access Transformation (ASCENT) initiative.

Social media influencer Pemphero Mphande explores healthcare partnerships in India

Renowned social media influencer and author, Pemphero Mphande, is currently in Mumbai, India, at the invitation of Gleneagles Hospital.

Mphande, who is also the Chairperson of the Pemphero Mphande and Friends Foundation, is on a mission to explore potential partnerships in the healthcare sector.

On Saturday, Mphande met with Dr. Sameer Pagad, Senior Consultant – Cardiology, and Dr. Bipin Chevale, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Gleneagles Hospital, to discuss the possibility of setting up a cardiac catheterization lab in Malawi.

The initiative aims to provide affordable and accessible cardiac care to Malawians, reducing the need for overseas treatment and generating foreign exchange.

Mphande emphasized the importance of this project, stating:”If we can make this happen, we can save many lives in Malawi, make cardiac procedures affordable, and bring in much-needed foreign exchange.”

In addition to exploring the cardiac lab initiative, Mphande is also working to forge partnerships with Indian hospitals to provide affordable healthcare options for Malawians.

He held meetings with three hospitals in India, including Gleneagles, to discuss potential collaborations.

Mphande expressed his gratitude to Gleneagles Hospital for sponsoring his trip and inviting him to explore these opportunities.

He also thanked his supporters and followers for their continued encouragement and prayers.

Comedian Mr Jokes sets record straight on wife’s identity

Renowned comedian, Jokes, has addressed speculation surrounding his wife’s identity, clarifying that she is not Anita wa Skin Care, as some fans had alleged.

The rumors emerged after Jokes posted a picture of himself and his wife on social media, prompting some followers to speculate about her identity.

However, through a Facebook post, Jokes has categorically denied any connection between his wife and Anita wa Skin Care.

“I want to assure my fans that these allegations are completely untrue.

“I don’t know Anita wa Skin Care, have never met her, and have no idea where she resides,” says Jokes.

He has appealed to his fans to refrain from jumping to conclusions or making assumptions based on social media posts.

“A picture can be interpreted in many ways, and I urge you all to be cautious when commenting or sharing your thoughts,” he says.

The comedian has emphasized that his intention was not to disrespect Anita wa Skin Care but to set the record straight and emphasize the truth.

Mulli loses goods valued at K500 million to theft

Renowned business magnate Leston Mulli has fallen victim to a significant theft, with goods worth a staggering K500 million going missing from one of his warehouses.

According to Limbe police spokesman, Aubrey Singanyama, Mulli reported the incident on Friday, prompting an immediate investigation.

“We are taking this matter seriously and are working to recover the stolen goods.

“The police are urging anyone with information about the theft to come forward and assist in the investigation,” said Singanyama.

While Singanyama declined to confirm or deny any arrests, sources within the police department revealed that two individuals, including a female relative of Mulli, have been taken into custody.

The suspects are being held under strict conditions, with limited visiting privileges.

Mulli’s business empire has been a significant contributor to Malawi’s economy, and this theft is a substantial blow to his operations.
