NBM plc awards Mo626 College Basketball best journalists

National Bank of Malawi (NBM) plc has awarded seven sports journalists for their outstanding coverage of the fourth edition of the Mo626 College Basketball Tournament.

The glamorous event, which also attracted some business journalists for the annual media interaction, took place at Sunbird Ku Chawe Hotel in Zomba on Friday.

The winners in the four categories included Ronald Mpaso of Times Group dominating the list, having clinched the Best Newspaper Reporter, and the second-Best Radio Reporter accolades.

Solomon Manda of the Nation Newspaper emerged the second best in the Print category, while Bright Kanyama was the runner-up in the radio section.

Malawi Broadcasting Corporation’s (MBC) Amin Mussa took home the Best Television Reporter award, followed by Mabvuto Kambuwe of Times Television.

Richard Tiyesi of Timveni was named the Best Online Reporter followed by Atlas Malawi’s Eric Chiputula.

Winners in all categories received K500 000 each, while runners-up cart home K350 000.

Speaking after presenting the awards, NBM plc Mobile and eMoney Manager, Enala Chirwa said the ‘Bank of the Nation’ recognizes and appreciates the role of the media in promoting the brand by bringing visibility.

“In the instance of the Mo626 College Basketball, it is the media that enabled the tournament to have a nationwide reach, where individuals across the country would appreciate the talent and determination of the various college basketball teams in the country,” said Chirwa.

Basketball Association of Malawi (BASMAL) Vice General Secretary, Eddah Mkombezi commended NBM plc for recognizing the journalists.

“These journalists help us to market the game of basketball. So, by getting recognized, it will energise them more in the next edition, thereby making people know about basketball and grow the game together,” said Mkombezi.

Mussa also hailed NBM plc for the recognition saying this will push them more.

“I feel energised to provide in-depth coverage of the tournament in the next edition. As journalists, our role is not just to publicise the tournament, but ensure that we grow the game through our analyses and commentaries,” he said.

NBM Plc sponsors the tournament to the tune of K450 million for three years.

Malawi Assemblies of God University (MAGU) Men and Women teams defended the fourth edition of the tournament in October last year.

Chithyola launches NSO Demographic and Health Survey  report

Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs Simplex Chithyola Banda has launched 2024 National Statistic Office(NSO) Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) key indicators report which indicates that Malawi is making strides on universal  access to health care.

Speaking during the launch on Thursday in Lilongwe Chithyola highlighted that  significant of the report  will help his ministry to provide occurrence interms of data and  planning economically.



He said :” we need to know exactly statistics data to help us to come up with good plans and policies.”

Chithyola  emphasised that the report is very essential as far as planning for economic development is concerned.

He mentioned that it is only  health population that stimulate population growth because they will be engaged into productivity whether in agriculture productivity or any productivity of the value chain which contribute economic development.

He added that the report  gives clear indication that country still have knowledge gap interms of utilising nutrition literacy for the households, overfeeding their children and that is resulting into obesity and overweight.

On his remarks  NSO Shelton Kanyanda said the report  indicates quite positive results in most indicators.

He said  they have seen total fertility rate declining since they start DHS in 2000 from 6.7 to 3.7 meaning the woman in 2000 was about to have 6.7 children in her life time but now it’s only 3.7 children.

Kanyanda also mentioned that in 2015 – 2016 DHS fertility rate declined from 4.4  children to 3.7 children.

He also outlined that women who are in child bearing age, who are attending antinatal, those who are giving birth 96% are being assisted by a qualified medical personel than in 2000  which it was 55% meaning half were been attended by qualified medical personel.

Kanyanda said the issue of stunted growth by the children has improved.

He stated that in the year 2000 when they started the DHS about 55% of children were stunted but now have gone down to about 28%.


Kanyanda also outlined the issue of mortality rate, saying out of 1000 kids being born 234 were not reaching the age of five.

He said :” So overall I would say the results are quite positive, I think the health indicators, the nutrition indicators are taking right direction in the country.

Kanyanda added the positive results has come due to number of intervention on health sector such as ministry of health has put in place records, tracking  the people who are sick, attending antinatal by pregnant women,  the presence of medical personel and provide food to kids to avoid stuntedness.

MACRA intends to procure integrated machine to track Misinformation and Disinformation

Malawi Regulatory Authority ( MACRA) has emphasized it’s move to procure $1.5 million equivalent to K 3 billion integrated system which will help to analyse and  track Misinformation an Disinformation that is being distributed on public social media platforms.

Speaking during the press briefing on Monday in Lilongwe MACRA Director General Daudi Suleman outlined that the system will help  them as a regulator in bringing up strategies to protect the people of Malawi.



He said :” as we develop in this new digital media where the conception of misinformation is large via public social media spaces.

” It is very important for us to ensure that we equip the people of Malawi with necessary capacities for them to be able to decide which one is good information and which is bad information and they can react when they receive such information.”

He explained that the platform will not spy and infringe freedom of expression among the people but it will be monitoring public social media interfaces with  Facebook and Twitter.

He stated that it does not go and read Whatsapp messages but only information that has been put in public space where the information is able to read and analyse.

He added that the element of spying which involves intrusion and surveillance is completely outside the scope .

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) leader of opposition in Parliament Dr George Chaponda urged MACRA to stop their move of procuring the machine since the  country is facing economic hardship.

Last week MACRA announced that they have made an agreement with a certain company from Ghana to procure the machine and to establish it in this country.

IMM,ICTAM sign MoU to empower members

The Institute of Marketing in Malawi (IMM) on Friday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the ICT Association of Malawi (ICTAM) to empower members of both organisations.

Speaking during the MoU signing ceremony at Amaryllis Hotel in Blantyre, IMM President George Damson said the three-year collaboration is expected to focus on equipping members with essential skills and knowledge to address critical topics in the fields of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and marketing.

Damson said the partnership will create valuable opportunities for members to acquire and exchange information.

He added that the initiative will also enhance the nation’s development as it aligns with the Malawi 2063 development blueprint.

On his part,Deputy President for ICTAM, Moses Dossi, said they believe that the partnership will help members exchange crucial IT and marketing skills.

He further said a highly skilled and trained marketing personnel will help in supporting both government and private sector efforts to achieve digitisation and advance the national development agenda.

WFP,Malawi partner to address el niño-induced drought crisis

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) and the Government of Malawi on Friday signed an agreement to import 48,000 metric tons of maize, valued at US$ 35 million and funded by the World Bank Group, to help food-insecure communities affected by the El Niño-induced drought.

Speaking during the signing ceremony in Lilongwe, WFP Regional Director for Southern Africa Eric Perdison reaffirmed their commitment to helping the country alleviate the hunger crisis.

“This collaboration shows the strength of partnerships in tackling the challenges caused by climate-related crises,” he said.

World Bank Country Manager for Malawi, Firas Raad, said the bank mobilized US$ 50 million earlier this year to help Malawi address the impact of the recent El Niño-induced drought in the country.

“We hope this financing will provide greater food security to vulnerable households, and we are proud of our close collaboration with WFP,” Raad said.

Commissioner for Disaster Management Affairs (DODMA),Charles Kalemba noted that the gesture reflects the strong commitment of the Government and its partners to alleviating hunger and improving food security in the country.

“This is a significant step in complementing Malawi Government’s efforts in provision of relief assistance to food-insecure households across the country,” said Kalemba.

Malawi is currently facing acute food insecurity challenges, with 5.7 million people rendered food insecure following the El Niño-induced drought, which negatively affected 44% of crops.
