Lecturer at the University of Hebron in Lilongwe, Dr. Lyford Sizi Banda, has released his debut book titled ‘Becoming Self-reliant’ (English version) and ‘Chiyambi cha Moyo Wodzidalira’ (Chichewa version).

The book, launched on November 29, 2024, at Sunbird Lilongwe Hotel, aims to empower the young generation to take responsibility for their lives, create their own wealth, and become self-reliant.

In an interview with our journalist Chisomo Phiri, Dr. Banda, who is passionate about seeing a positive change in Malawi, said he was motivated to write the book due to the country’s struggles with poverty and unsustainable livelihoods, particularly among the young generation.

He said the book is available through his contacts: +265999317353/+265881723234 or via email: banda.lyford@yahoo.com.

When asked about the writing industry in Malawi, Dr. Banda expressed concerns about the lack of financial support for writers, making it challenging for him to publish his book.

Despite the challenges,Dr. Banda said he is hopeful that his book will inspire young people to realize their potential and contribute to the economic development of their families, churches, communities, and the nation.

Dr. Banda’s writing journey began in 2018, and he plans to continue writing and inspiring others through his work.

Vice President Dr. Michael Usi has called on the people of Mwanza to ensure they register with the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) to secure their right to vote in the 2025 General Elections. Dr. Usi made the appeal during a whistle-stop tour in Thambani on Monday, aimed at encouraging voter registration in the district.

Speaking to a gathering at Kayera Village under Group Village Headman Tsegulani in the area of Senior Chief Govati, Dr. Usi emphasized the importance of civic engagement. “Voting is your democratic right and a powerful tool to shape the future of our nation. Register now so that you can exercise this right in 2025,” he said.

During his visit, the Vice President also inspected the Kayera Health Post, highlighting the government’s commitment to improving healthcare services in rural areas. He reassured the community of the administration’s plans to uplift their well-being through enhanced health infrastructure and other development initiatives.

“The government is dedicated to ensuring that quality healthcare is accessible to all, including those in remote areas like this. Together, we can build a healthier and stronger Malawi,” Dr. Usi said.

Earlier in the day, Dr. Usi toured Senior Chief Nthache’s house, currently under construction by the government. The Vice President’s visit demonstrated the administration’s effort to improve living conditions for traditional leaders, acknowledging their critical role in community leadership and development.

Dr. Michael Usi’s tour in Mwanza underscores the government’s dual focus on promoting civic participation through voter registration and driving development initiatives to improve the quality of life for all Malawians. As the 2025 elections draw nearer, the Vice President’s call to action is a reminder of the collective responsibility to strengthen democracy in the country.

Member of Parliament for Nsanje Lalanje, Gladys Ganda, has expressed frustration over challenges faced by the National Registration Bureau (NRB) in facilitating voter registration in the Shire Valley and other areas. According to Ganda, some registration centers lack functional computers, which are either damaged or unavailable, hindering the process.

She also noted that some individuals who manage to register are being told to collect their cards after two weeks, further complicating the process for many residents.

Ganda, along with her party representatives, visited affected centers to assess the situation and engage with relevant officials. During the discussions, the officials assured them that the problems would be resolved within two days.

“We are closely monitoring the situation and expecting that all these issues will be fixed as promised. If not, we will take appropriate action,” Ganda warned.

Efforts to get comments from MEC Deputy Spokesperson Richard Mveriwa and NRB Chief Registrar Mphatso Sambo were unsuccessful, as they did not respond to calls for clarification on the matter.

The delays and inefficiencies have raised concerns among residents and stakeholders, as they could impact the smooth progression of the voter registration process. With the 2025 General Elections approaching, ensuring accessible and functional registration systems remains critical to guaranteeing citizens’ right to vote.

Ganda has called for urgent action to address these challenges, emphasizing that a failure to resolve the issues promptly could lead to further action from her and her team.

President Lazarus Chakwera has reiterated his administration’s dedication to transforming Malawi’s agriculture sector, emphasizing its critical role in alleviating poverty. Speaking at Chiunjiza Trading Centre in Msinja South Constituency, Traditional Authority Masula, Lilongwe District, the President underscored the need for sustainable agricultural practices and fair prices for farm produce to bolster the nation’s economy.

“As a country heavily reliant on agriculture, we must ensure that our farmers are economically empowered through fair and competitive prices, particularly for tobacco,” President Chakwera stated. “Let me assure you that the upward trend in tobacco prices witnessed last season will continue, as this is key to improving the livelihoods of our farmers.”

President Chakwera highlighted the government’s “Mega Farms Initiative” as a cornerstone of its strategy to achieve food security and economic resilience. He lauded institutions and faith-based organizations that have established their own mega farms, describing these efforts as vital complements to the government’s agenda.

“The success of these mega farms will ensure that Malawi becomes self-reliant in food production while creating economic opportunities for our people,” he said.

The President encouraged farmers to make the most of the timely onset of rains by intensifying their agricultural activities. “Hard work in the fields this season will lead to a bumper harvest next year,” he urged.

Turning to the ongoing voter registration drive, President Chakwera appealed to all eligible voters to register in large numbers ahead of the 2025 General Elections. “This is your opportunity to choose leaders who will represent your interests and drive Malawi’s development forward,” he said.

Francis Belekanyama, Member of Parliament for Msinja South, praised the government’s timely implementation of the 2024 Affordable Input Programme (AIP). He noted that this initiative would enable farmers to access essential inputs early, enhancing productivity in the region.

Belekanyama also called for more support for farmers in Dzalanyama, emphasizing the area’s capacity to supply food to Lilongwe City and beyond.

President Chakwera’s remarks reinforce the administration’s vision of agriculture as a cornerstone of Malawi’s socio-economic development. The emphasis on fair pricing, mega farms, and timely support programs reflects the government’s commitment to empowering farmers and ensuring food security for all Malawians.
