By Vincent Gunde

A born-again Christian, Evangelist and politician Ken Msonda, has backed Dr. Saulosi Klaus Chilima’s family lamentation and concern that some people are using the name of the departed Vice President as a campaign tool to advance their political agenda.

Msonda said death is very painful saying he has passed through sorrowful times and seeing others taking the death of others as a playful thing, is inhuman and satanic claiming that the family did not name who are these people.

Msonda

He said opposition parties DPP and UTM are the ones that are not respecting the death of Dr. Chilima as evidenced with Candlelight Memorial Services claiming that in these, they take it as Talk Shows doing some things which cannot please the family.

Speaking through an audio clip circulating in various social media platforms, Msonda has appealed to all not to take death as a playful thing advising all to give a break to Dr. Chilima’s family to mourn in peace and in dignified manner.

“I share their concern and lamentation 100 percent right, those that are celebrating today are those that were against him, those that are advancing politics through Dr. Chilima’s name are finishing themselves,” said Msonda.

But, a Malawi Congress Party (MCP) diehard of Mvera in Dowa district Mr. Rodgers Kamphangala has reminded Msonda that he is a politician and his comments even if they are genuine, Malawians cannot take it as seriously.

Kamphangala has backed those that are holding Candlelight Memorial Services as doing a good thing claiming that Malawians are demanding speedy answers from government on the tragic and mysterious death of Dr. Chilima.

He said these Candlelight Memorial Services are being patronized by many Malawians regardless of their political parties saying it is wrong to be saying that DPP and UTM are gaining advantage to advance their political ambitions.

Kamphangala said while he is sharing the same concern and lamentation as Dr. Chilima’s family, government has a key to tell Malawians the truth on Dr. Chilima’s tragic death claiming that every tragic and mysterious death has a suspect or suspects.

He recalled that Malawians have been demanding three transparent and credible investigations, one for Dr. Chilima’s family and UTM, Church organizations and Civil Society Organizations (CSOS) and that of government warning government that if these investigations have not been in place, expect Candlelight Memorial Services to continue across the country.

Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) Director General, Daud Suleman, says MACRA will continue conducting Open Days to enhance interaction with players in the digital and telecommunication sector and consumers, so that they can understand the mandate and laws that govern the authority.

Suleman was speaking on Monday during the Blantyre MACRA Open Day held at Mount Soche Hotel in the commercial city.

Daudi Suleman

“MACRA works within the laws. There are some pieces of legislation that also need a lot of awareness and knowledge.

“MACRA will continue to engage a wide range of stakeholders to sensitize them on a number of Acts, so they can understand better the regulatory authority,”he said.

On his part, Minister of Information and Digitalisation, Moses Kunkuyu, said MACRA’s Open Days are dedicated to players in the digital and telecommunication sector to create an interactive space and share ideas that should contribute to the development of the industry.

The Minister, therefore, said Open Days are crucial as they will help in fostering a vibrant ICT sector to drive Malawi’s socio-economic development.

He encouraged those who patronized the Blantyre Open Day to share with MACRA areas requiring improvement for the sake of effective collaboration in the telecommunication sector.

“In line with Malawi 2063, MACRA is doing a lot in rural areas, such as the introduction of the Connect-A-School Project in various public education institutions,” he said, adding that a number of ICT labs are being constructed in community day secondary schools to promote the use of ICT services and the provision of Wi-Fi internet connectivity.

“Under the Universal Service Fund, MACRA will enhance access to broadband and ICT in public education institutions, and this will eventually address internet connectivity gaps,” he added.

Kunkuyu disclosed that MACRA is also looking forward to another Bill, which, when it becomes a law, will help create a stable legal framework in the digital and telecommunication sector, observing that sanity in the digital and telecommunication sector will only come if there are regulations.

During the event, MACRA and players in the telecommunication sector discussed a number of areas, including courier services in Malawi, Malawi Postal Services’ recent retrenchment and suspension of coach services, updates on the Connect-A-School Project, issues related to the Electronic Transactions and Cyber Security Act, and the Data Protection Act.

MACRA will hold similar Open Days in Lilongwe and Mzuzu cities.
