Promote Panthers FC to super league-Nyirenda

Renowned sports analyst Charles Nyirenda has called for the immediate promotion of Panthers FC to the Super League.

This follows the team’s impressive performance in the Castle Cup, where they  defeated four top-flight teams,Silver Strikers, MAFCO, Chitipa United, and Civo United.

According to Nyirenda, Panthers FC’s exploits in the Castle Cup are a testament to their readiness for the Super League.

He has urged the authorities to waive the usual promotion requirements and invite Panthers FC to join the top-flight league automatically.

“Panthars FC have already passed the test, and it is only fair that they be promoted to the Super League immediately.

“Let them jump the queue.Congratulations to Panthers FC for showing everyone how good they are. Now, go all the way,” said Nyirenda.

Earlier this year, another Division One side, Blue Eagles FC, won the FDH Bank Cup after dispatching three Super League teams.

Jackpot City Casino launches Malawi’s first online casino platform

Jackpot City Casino on Wednesday launched the first online casino-only platform in Malawi aimed at offering a premium gaming experience with a variety of casino games.

The platform features games such as crash, aviator, and spin games.

It is optimised for desktop and mobile devices and will soon be available on app stores.

Speaking at the launch at Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe, Jackpot City Casino chief operations officer Charles Phiri, said the platform aims to fill a gap in online gaming by delivering an engaging experience for players.

“Our goal is to create a platform that goes beyond gaming.

“It is about delivering a secure and responsible environment giving players an opportunity to win big,” he said.

The company’s brand manager Sharné Govender expressed excitement about the launch stressing the group’s intentions to uplift the community.

Licensed in Malta, Jackpot City Casino is an online betting site that has become known for its large gaming library, great support, and excellent management staff.

It was founded in 1998 and has been operating ever since that time.

Msimuko appointed Illovo Sugar Malawi Plc interim MD

Illovo Sugar Malawi Plc has announced the appointment of Kondwani Msimuko as interim Managing Director (MD) of the company effective January 1, 2025.

In a statement, the company’s board chairperson Jimmy Lipunga says Msimuko’s appointment comes following the impending departure of Lekani Katandula who will assume a new role as Chief Financial Officer for the Associated British Foods(ABF) Sugar in the UK, from January 1, 2025.

“His expertise in risk management and accounting, combined with his leadership skills, has been instrumental in navigating the company through a dynamic environment,”  says Lipunga in a statement.

He says currently, they are in the process of appointing a permanent MD, having already advertised the position.

Msimuko joined Illovo in 2021, and currently serves as the Finance Director.

Govt takes proactive step towards resilience

The Government in collaboration with the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) and the African Union (AU), has embarked on the Country Structural Vulnerability Assessment (CSVA) process aimed at strengthening the country’s capacity to withstand and recover from crises.

The process involves engaging with various stakeholders at the regional and national levels to understand the problems, challenges, strengths, and potential solutions.

The exercise is expected to conclude on December 17, with a comprehensive report outlining a mitigation strategy for long-term solutions.


Speaking in an interview with 247Malawi News, Head of Governance, Peace and Security for COMESA,Dr. Oita Etyang revealed that the exercise is a follow-up to the government’s request to undergo self-examination on challenges and strengths related to governance, climate change, gender, security, education, and development.

On his part,District Commissioner(DC) for Blantyre, Alex Mdooko, emphasized the importance of the consultative meeting in addressing critical challenges and understanding the risks and strengths that shape Malawi’s resilience.

Malawi has become the second country to undergo CSVA in the COMESA region, with similar meetings being conducted in the other two regions of the country.

Banda launches NMEP to track progress of Govt initiatives

Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs, Simplex Chithyola Banda,on December 9,2024 launched the National Monitoring and Evaluation Policy(NMEP), aimed at providing a framework for measuring the impact and effectiveness of government actions.

Speaking at the launch in Lilongwe, Chithyola emphasized the importance of evidence-based decision-making, stating that most government actions will now be based on research and data-driven evidence.

“We need to ensure that our planning is informed by evidence, and that we’re addressing the real needs of our citizens,” he explained.

The minister said NMEP provides a framework for tracking the progress and impact of government initiatives, enabling data-driven decision-making and transparency.

He noted that this marks a significant step towards transparency and accountability in government services.

UNDP Country Representative,Fenela Frost commended the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability.

“Every country has a responsibility to clearly communicate how public funds are being used to benefit citizens.

“This policy will enable the government to track progress towards Vision 2063 and identify areas for improvement,” she said.
